Jennifer Tilly, like many professionals, began acting in high school, having been bitten by the theater bug as a teen. Her mother, a former stage actress herself, helped Jennifer (as well as her younger sister Meg) pursue walk-on roles and supporting parts in various Hollywood TV shows, and Tilly made her TV debut on an episode of the sitcom "Oh Madeline" in 1983. In 1984, she secured a regular role on the obscure comedy series "Shaping Up," which starred Leslie Nielsen as a grumpy health club owner. Tilly appeared in all five episodes. Her real big break came that same year, as she secured a recurring role on the hit cop show "Hill Street Blues," appearing in six episodes.
Tilly would spend the next few years acting in guest spots on hit shows like "Moonlighting," "Cheers," and "Remington Steel." She would also make a move into cinemas, appearing in multiple studio comedies and thrillers.

Jennifer Lawrence is a one-of-a-kind talent who has a refreshingly candid and bubbly personality. She’s cemented herself as a respected actress in Hollywood with multiple great projects. So, you’d expect someone like her to watch most of the renowned movies in the industry, but surprisingly, she has missed out on one Daniel Day-Lewis starrer.

For the first time since 2022, this year’s South by Southwest Film & Television Festival does not overlap with the Oscars — which seems to have given SXSW curators a richer field to pull from, as the 2025 lineup has no shortage of buzzy titles and stars. Running from March 7-15, the festival will feature 96 movies and 16 series from the likes of Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Issa Rae, Seth Rogen, Jenna Ortega and more.
Hollywood will see itself satirized on the first night of the festival, as Rogen’s upcoming Apple TV+ series “The Studio” has been set as the opening night TV premiere. As well as co-creating with Evan Goldberg, Rogen stars as the new chief of an “embattled” studio in an era where “movies struggle to stay alive and relevant.” The cast also includes Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn — with plenty of celebrity cameos.

Being booed isn’t typically an indication that a comedy show has gone well, hence the reason why Rob Schneider isn’t currently headlining any Canadian hospital fundraisers. But button pushing stand-up comedian and Billy Corgan lookalike Bill Burr recently revealed that one of his favorite gigs of all time found his fellow comics being relentlessly heckled.
During a recent appearance on Wtf with Marc Maron, Burr and Maron chatted about the time they appeared together at “Comics Come Home,” the annual Boston charity show co-founded by Dennis Leary. This prompted Burr to recall when he performed at the event in November 2016. “I went up one year, and one comic — it was the first time Trump got elected — and this person went up on stage, and so trashed Trump (that) half the crowd was booing.”

Arguably the most dramatic incident in the early days of Saturday Night Live — with the possible exception of the time an elderly host got hammered during the show — was breakout star Chevy Chase’s departure at the end of the first season.
There have been multiple theories floated as to why exactly Chase left the hit show when it was in its infancy, a decision that he later came to regret. The most prominent explanation is that Chase wanted to pursue a film career, which he alluded to when he facetiously told David Letterman in 1980 that he quit SNL in order to “get the big bucks in Hollywood.” But then Chase more seriously explained that the hectic schedule had left him “exhausted,” and he felt as though his time at the show had run its course.

For filmmakers caught up in the heat of the awards race, one of its benefits and curses is having to spend a huge chunk of time off your home turf. This is a particularly difficult prospect when the place you’re going brings a distinct sense of unease. Such was the case over the last few weeks as British writer/director Mike Leigh took some time across the pond for the U.S. nationwide release of his new feature, “Hard Truths.”
“I’ve been to the States in the last few weeks,” Leigh said during a recent interview on the “Wtf with Marc Maron” podast. “And of course, you can’t help thinking, ‘Jesus fuck, I’m going to Trump Land.’ I mean, it’s hard even to begin to articulate the worry.”

One of the great things about Leonardo DiCaprio—and why filmmakers love working with him so much—is his extreme dedication to his craft. He’s not just an actor who performs for the sake of it, but he immerses himself in the world of his character and tries to dive deep into the mind of who he is portraying.

While talking with Marc Maron on the “Wtf” podcast, Brody circled to his director and how he not just understood the dynamics of power in the film but also the “hardships” of being an artist in the industry.
“He understands the psychology of all of this very well,” Brody said. “And also being an artists, striving and the hardships of being a filmmaker in this business and being an auteur filmmaker and the obstacles and the complexities of having a benefactor, having to raise money to do the work and then everything you want to do and desire to do cannot be compromised if you have a vision. Adam Pally is among those in Hollywood remembering late director Jeff Baena, who died Friday by suicide at the age of 47.
Baena was a writer-director who helmed such indie films as Life After Beth, The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Spin Me Round, often working with wife Aubrey Plaza. The pair married in 2020 after being together for 10 years.
Pally and others who knew Baena have taken to social media over the weekend to share their memories of him, after the news of his death broke early Saturday morning.
On Instagram Sunday, Pally wrote, “Jeff Baena was a sweet, Jewish boy from Miami. He was a collaborator, a mentor, the scrappiest basketball player with the ugliest jump shot you ever saw.”
The actor, who starred alongside Plaza in Baena’s films Joshy, The Little Hours and Life After Beth, called Baena a “talented director with impeccable taste and vision.”

Matthew McConaughey got his big break as a leading drama actor, thanks to his role as attorney Jake Brigance in A Time to Kill. It was Joel Schumacher’s second film adaptation of a John Grisham novel. Interestingly, the studio initially wanted a recognizable name in the role of the young lawyer. The director was among the few who believed McConaughey could pull off a leading role.

The Order (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After following the chilling character portraits in ‘Nitram’ and ‘The Snowtown Murders,’ Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place; and how people react in such situations of change.

Was Jennifer Lawrence almost cast jn The Hateful Eight? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Tarantino actually wanted Lawrence to play Daisy Domergue, the ruthless, sharp-tongued outlaw at the heart of his gritty western flick. But alas, scheduling demons struck hard.
Tarantino, a self-proclaimed huge Jennifer Lawrence fan, wasn’t just casually thinking about it. He told Entertainment Weekly, “I’m a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan. I think I’ve been on record of saying that her and David O. Russell’s relationship is very William Wyler-Bette Davis-like, and that’s a good thing to be like. And I can see her doing a good job with this role, so we went to talk about it and everything.” That’s some serious admiration right there. But reality? Reality laughed in Tarantino’s face.
Lawrence was swamped with Joy, The Hunger Games press marathon, and just about every blockbuster-related obligation under the sun.

A critically acclaimed thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult is getting a VOD release. Known for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain, two films that earned him Academy Award nominations, Law has maintained an impressive catalog across his 38-year career. The actor currently leads the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast on Disney+, a particular bright spot for the franchise in terms of audience reception, and has appeared in other major blockbusters over the years, including Sherlock Holmes, Captain Marvel, and Fantastic Beasts. Law also starred in fan-favorite romantic movies Closer and The Holiday.
When it comes to Hoult, whose star has been on the rise for the past decade, X-Men: First Class and Warm Bodies seemed to kickstart his mainstream career. Since then, he has taken on various projects that achieved commercial success and/or garnered praise from audiences, reprising his role as Beast in multiple X-Men sequels...

Chinese filmmaker Jing Zou, director of the narrative feature film “A Girl Unknown,” has been named as the winner of the fifth annual Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant from Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum (Nwff). This grant includes an unrestricted cash award of $25,000 to support her directorial debut, which follows a girl from age six through her 30s as she’s passed between multiple families and is inspired by the true story of generations of Chinese girls who were abandoned as a result of the country’s defunct one-child policy.
“I am absolutely honored to be selected as the recipient of the 2024 Lynn Shelton ‘Of a Certain Age’ award for my first feature, ‘A Girl Unknown.’ Thank you for this recognition and for your support,” Zou said in a statement. “I am committed to making the most of this award and to creating a film that honors the spirit of Lynn Shelton.

Santa Claus won’t be the only thing coming down the chimney this Christmas Eve, as director Justin Kurzel’s FBI thriller The Order comes to On Demand. In the film, a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest leads a veteran FBI agent into a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. Nothing says Christmas like violence and corruption! Who’s bringing the spiked eggnog?
Here’s the official synopsis for The Order:
“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plans to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

Pedro Pascal remains one of the most versatile actors in the industry today, considering the density of his work since the Game of Thrones era. However, while Hollywood opens up a treasury of opportunities and choices, Pascal carefully navigates among scripts and projects that call to him and also manages to resonate with the fans and critics.

While box office success was the furthest thing from the actor’s mind when he signed up for the HBO fantasy epic, the future seems to hold nothing but acclaim for Pedro Pascal. But the actor’s journey in the cinematic world began with humble roots and one of the first stars to inspire and set him on his current path was Willem Dafoe.

Macaulay Culkin shot to fame in the late 80s with his appearance in Rocket Gibraltar. Managed by his father Kit Culkin, his acting career seemed to be on a constant rise ever since, with movies like Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Richie Rich, and more. The father-son duo were also spotted many times in public appearances and award shows having a good time back then.

However, according to the former child star, things were not as great as they appeared. Culkin has claimed many times throughout the years that his father was abusive. Not only towards him, but also his other siblings, most of whom were also child stars, and even towards his mother.
In an interview back in 2018, Culkin claimed that the abuse was so severe that he still carried scars from it. This is what, according to him, led to...

Julia Roberts has had many extraordinary performances in her career. Her role in Erin Brockovich (2000) won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, and her performances in Steel Magnolias (1990), Pretty Woman (1991), and August: Osage County (2014) earned Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations. Roberts is best known for romantic comedies, but she has also starred in biographical films, dramas, and even thrillers. After all, Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Ocean's Twelve (2004) saw her dive into a world of heists.
Her Hollywood career began with an uncredited role in 1987's Firehouse, and she has since gone on to star in dozens of movies. She has, of course, also taken on roles in the TV landscape as well. She starred in Homecoming, Gaslit, and in one-off appearances in Law & Order and Miami Vice. Her next role will be her first since the divisive Leave the World Behind (2023), and it should be a masterful performance.

There's no such thing as a "bad" year for movies -- not if you watch enough of them. That statement might come across like a hackneyed cliché every time film fans trot that out and lob it into the ether like a self-righteous grenade ... but it's still true!
Okay, we won't put lipstick on a pig: the state of the industry these days feels, to put a fine point on it, dire. Blockbusters have bullied out smaller and more original offerings on their way to ruling the roost, though even that's no guarantee anymore with the way budgets keep skyrocketing. Streaming platforms have become a last, desperate haven for passion projects from our best and brightest filmmakers ... but that only makes it easier for the Powers That Be to take movies like Clint Eastwood's "Juror #2" and sentence them to a digital death penalty. And unless they're dealing with names like Christopher Nolan,...

From “I Am Love” to “Queer,” romance and desire have always been fundamental to Luca Guadagnino’s storytelling. Even in more mainstream fare like “Call Me by Your Name” and “Challengers,” Guadagnino has found ways to incorporate intimacy as a way of exploring humanity, but the Italian filmmaker recently shared that his latest film, “After the Hunt,” will diverge from these subjects.
“It’s not a movie about sexuality or love. It’s one of my very rare movies where I didn’t tackle that,” Guadagnino said in a recent interview on “Wtf with Marc Maron.” In describing what the film would cover, he added, “It’s a very timely movie for where we are now. In terms of the society and the division in society and the extreme positions that we can have vis-a-vis an opinion in a way.”
Guadagnino described the project, which is currently in post-production, as “a very surprising movie,...

Sad news in the world of late-night comedy. Conan O’Brien’s parents both passed away this week, within just three days of one another. The redheaded host’s father, Dr. Thomas O’Brien died on Monday at the age of 95, while his wife, 92-year-old Ruth Reardon O’Brien, died “peacefully” on Thursday.`
While much of the news of the O’Briens’ deaths has obviously been framed around their celebrity son, it turns out that they were incredibly impressive professionals in fields that in no way involved, say, having a meltdown on YouTube while rubbing hot sauce on your nipples.
O’Brien’s mother, for example, was reportedly “one of just four women in her Yale Law School class.” She later clerked for a “former chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, became a real estate attorney and was the second woman to become a partner at the renowned Ropes & Gray law firm in Boston.

Back in 2017, Joe Mande made a big statement out of his first hour of stand-up on Netflix. Not only does Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special promise a lot in its title alone; it’s contained within a frame device about Mande trying to win the American Humour Award, with material about (among other things) a traumatic diarrhea incident at summer camp, the sex aid he’d like to pitch on Shark Tank and his documentary film obsession Thought Crimes, about the NYPD’s so-called Cannibal Cop. Viewers might learn something about ethics and philosophy from watching, but it would be a longer walk for them to get there than when they watched The Good Place, on which Mande was a writer at the time.
Today, Mande’s second special, Chill, comes to Hulu. And while his opening chunk promises that, thanks to his new mood stabilizer regime, he is chill,...

Some funny actors can go a lifetime without being cast in a hit sitcom. Others get that golden opportunity then throw it away thanks to a stupid foot inserted into a stupid mouth. Here are 5 comedians who scored big in situation comedy, only to get fired for saying something ridiculously dumb…
1 Roseanne Barr
The highly rated return of Roseanne was a feel-good comeback story until its lead comedian took to Twitter one night and burned it all to the ground. All it took was a tweet in which Roseanne compared Valerie Jarrett, a Black senior adviser to Barack Obama, to “if muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.”
ABC immediately canceled the show, although it was later resurrected without Barr as The Conners. That didn’t sit well with Barr, who accused former costar Sara Gilbert of stabbing her in the back after she tweeted, “This is incredibly...

When thinking about why he wanted to star in a film like “The Order” during this time in history, Jude Law reflects that the idea of division through hatred is something that’s been around forever but also highlighted a story that he felt needed to be amplified. “It shone light on the early forming of hate groups and extremist groups in the States and by going back, telling a story that somehow has these uncomfortable relevances to today is a great way of talking and having a conversation starter,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He adds, “By concentrating on getting that authentic, it seemed to be effective as a piece that’s commenting on where we are now.”

Did Leonardo DiCaprio earn big from Inception? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Yes, Tom earned the kind of paycheck that turned heads. DiCaprio managed to snag at least $50 million from the hit Christopher Nolan flick. That was just from box office earnings. Add DVD and TV sales into the mix, and Leo’s haul could be much, much bigger.
Back in 2010, Inception was a wild gamble. Nolan’s twisty, dream-heist concept wasn’t exactly a blockbuster sure-shot back then. Warner Bros. was banking $160 million on a film that had zero sequels, zero remakes, and zero cartoon mascots. It was risky—but DiCaprio took a bet on Nolan’s genius and signed a deal that would make him a first-dollar gross player. In simpler terms, he earned money straight off ticket sales, way before studio expenses were even covered. That’s a deal most stars don’t get these days. But DiCaprio was...

Director Justin Kurzel was not at all familiar with the story of Bob Mathews until he started reading the script for “The Order” written by Zach Baylin. “I’d sort of read the first 15 pages and I was like, oh wow, this reminds me of these great seventies films that Friedkin and Lumet used to kind of do,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above).
As he read the script he found himself more and more captivated by the subject of American extremism. “I wasn’t aware of ‘The Turner Diaries.’ I wasn’t aware of this sort of organization such as The Order. I was curious. I’ve been interested in the past with films that I’ve done here about how communities can be influenced by figures that can manipulate them to believe in their own kind of ideology.”

Early in “The Order,” the ’80s-set historical crime thriller, there is a chillingly timely stand-off between the staid establishment and the insurgent next generation. Aryan Nation founder Richard Butler (Victor Slezak) attempts, and fails, to defuse Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), the charismatic young leader of an ultra-violent and extremely organized splinter group planning an armed white supremacist revolution. “Robert, you have a gift … a voice,” says Butler, clad in a conventional trench coat over a full suit and tie. Eye-to-eye on the dusty dirt road, Matthews stands defiant in a weathered waffle shirt barely tucked into belted, worn-in jeans.
“Justin [Kurzel, the director] and I wanted Bob to feel really recognizably all-American,” costume designer Rachel Dainer-Best told IndieWire. “He’s super simple — wearing jeans and a T-shirt for basically the whole movie.” Because photos of the real Matthews and his acolytes proved rare, she studied ‘70s and ‘80s images of the Aryan Nation...

This review was originally published on August 31, 2024, as a part of our Venice Film Festival coverage.
The Order is about hate, though not quite in the way you'd expect. It seems an obvious theme, given the story follows a white supremacist terrorist cell and the FBI's effort to stop them, and some space is given to the hateful doctrine they live by. But the movie is less interested in hate ideologically as it is in the feeling. And director Justin Kurzel is less interested in explaining that feeling than he is in observing it and its effects. Surround that goal with across-the-board quality, and you have a consistently tense crime thriller that leaves a lasting mark.
A lone FBI agent, stationed in a small Idaho town, uncovers a disturbing connection between a series of violent bank robberies and a white supremacist group known as The Order. As the investigation deepens,...

Plot: A burnt-out FBI agent (Jude Law) tries to shut down a right-wing militia run by a white supremacist (Nicholas Hoult) who’s planning an armed insurrection.
Review: The Order is a slickly made, true-crime thriller that tells a pretty compelling story; in the mid-eighties, a group calling themselves The Order pulled off a series of violent robberies and also bombed synagogues and porn theatres, all of which was inspired by a book called “The Turner Diaries”, which was written by the leader of the National Alliance, which was one of the most powerful Neo Nazi organizations in the United States.
In The Order, Nicholas Hoult, in a role that casts him way against type, plays Robert Jay Mathews, who put together a violent, heavily armed militia that began carrying out a series of brutal assassinations and robberies. In the film, this puts them in the crosshairs of Jude Law’s Agent Husk,...

During the pandemic lockdown and in the frigid months of more recent years, many home viewers became hooked on “true crime” stories that were once the lifeblood of broadcast TV news “magazine” shows, but now have entire cable networks devoted to them. And the streaming apps are simply bursting with documentaries and “limited” series that are comprised of recreations and “talking head” interviews. While motion pictures had been the showcase for non-fiction law enforcement tales, recently we’ve seen more of the “over the top” “stunt-heavy” action blockbusters. Now, in between the year-end family fantasies and the somber “Oscar bait”, here’s a nifty thriller that evokes the feel of those zippy “B pictures”. Ah, but there’s a twist in that much of the story still resonates today, several decades later. Yes, on a cold day almost four years ago, the country was dealing with the legacy of The Order.

The Order is as much a crime thriller as it is a psychological drama, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more fascinating. The movie, which is directed by Justin Kurzel (True History of the Kelly Gang) from a screenplay penned by Zach Baylin (King Richard), where follows FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) as he investigates violent bank robberies and their connection to white supremacist cult leader Bob Mathews (played by Nicholas Hoult).
Law's veteran officer is joined by colleagues Jamie Bowen (Tye Sheridan) and Joanee Carney (Jurnee Smollett), going toe-to-toe with Hoult's charming and calculating neo-nazi Mathews. The Order peers into the soul of each character, testing them when they are up against a truly reckless individual. Bowen in particular comes across as a more naive member of the force, and an interest...
