Within the realm of martial arts, few directors enjoy the same cult status as Joseph Kuo. Thanks to his presence in pop culture, in music as well as other features, his features from the 1970s remain popular and will certainly be watched by new generations of cinephiles due to their presence in home cinema. However, to fully appreciate what Kuo has given martial arts cinema, it is worth taking a look at some of his features in closer detail, in this case his 1977 effort “7 Grandmasters”. While you might argue the plot is nothing to write home about, the fight sequences and the obsession with physicality, technique and status is an aspect which is quite fascinating and may add to the feature's cult status.

Kung Fu movies can sometimes get a bit of a bad reputation. Bad VHS copies, poor dubbing etc. have created a legacy that can be hard to shift. Outside of the principle names, it can be hard to recognize them seriously but amidst all the schlock there were some pretty good movies that emerged from the golden era and are slowly getting re-released for a new audience to discover. Joseph Kuo created a whole series of lower budget spectacles in Taiwan during the 70’s that deserve a spot of re-evaluation. “7 Grandmasters” is one such production.

I consider myself a pretty big fan of martial arts cinema. I began collecting the Hong Kong Legends label early in its life, and now have approximately 80% of everything they ever released. I also do my best to keep up with the genre, though that’s a difficult task due to how few foreign examples get proper UK releases. Before the Golden Harvest era, which was where Hkl concentrated their releases, I confess that my knowledge is limited, and that’s probably why I hadn’t stumbled on Joseph Kuo Nan-Hong before this set was announced.
Collecting 8 of Kuo’s films (one of them in two different cuts), in two themed collections, this boxset is an ideal introduction to director whose films have probably previously been largely dismissed in the UK thanks to bad dubs and incorrectly framed releases.
The first four films come under the umbrella ‘Deadly Masters’. First...

A year after his magnificent performance in “The Story of Woo Viet”, Chow Yun-fat played another kind of Vietnamese refugee as Nguyen, one who is a contract killer for the “Eagles” while also working as a special effects technician in movies. According to the Hk New Wave book, “This film was made for a western audience and was not released in Hong Kong…” The b-movie, horror/exploitation Hollywood aesthetics are indeed, quite intense here. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Nguyen leads a rather harsh life, but his dream of bringing his family to Hong Kong keeps him going, despite the violence that derives from his actions, but also seems to find him against his will. The second axis of the script revolves around TV reporter Vicky Lee, who is investigating a series of murders and an apparent gas attack on an elementary school. Eventually,...

The following recap, by the very definition of the word “recap,” contains spoilers from the Shooter series finale.
Shooter went out with many bangs — including a quite devastating one — as the USA Network drama wrapped its three-season run on Thursday night.
Picking right up where the Supreme Court building explosion left off, Isaac accompanied Nadine as she was whisked away in an ambulance, in “stable but bad” shape. Bob Lee, with Harris’ help, meanwhile sneaked inside the building to hunt down the Atlas operative behind the bus bomb, Jack Long. After finding Justice Carla Tortelli’s Gibson’s driver tied...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.
I want to name a few of my favorite end fight scenes and please feel free to comment below, your favorite fight scenes and maybe they will be added to the future features.

While walking down teh street, a man and his teenage daughter are attacked for no reason. "Obey me and you will live, turn against me and you will die" he cries the laughing maniac. It seems he is after their clans silver skull (don't ask me, I have no idea why they have such an item). The old man refuses to hand over the skull so is told that he and his daughter must die. A fight breaks out in which deadly beams are thrown and ninja smoke blasted, but the man and his daughter are quickly overcome. The laughing maniac then takes the souls of the defeated twosome and places them in pots with others who have lost to him and tells his zombie slave to guard them.
