Director John Gulager’s latest horror comedy oddity, Seven Cemeteries, starring Danny Trejo, is a super fun mismatch of zombie-western narratives that surely stands head and shoulders above the recent deluge of pre-Halloween horror VOD releases. The premise is pretty basic; think of Seven Samurai but with a crew of wisecracking undead going against a dreaded drug lord, and that’s all you need to know before diving into the goofy, bloody spectacle of Seven Cemeteries. Aside from some good comedic moments scattered throughout the plot, the fact that despite having little screentime, the ensemble of characters have their distinct personalities is what I find really commendable. Embracing the tropes and clichés of both the western and zombie horror genres, the movie is self-conscious enough to never take itself too seriously, and despite that, it features some well-earned emotional moments that leave a mark at the end. It’s good...

One of the greatest pitchers in Los Angeles Dodgers history was honored Friday night at Dodger Stadium before the game.
The Dodgers retired Fernando Valenzuela’s No. 34 jersey, the culminating event in the city council declaration of “Fernando Valenzuela Day.”
In a pregame moment, the 62-year-old Valenzuela admitted, “It’s very emotional” to a crowded room of English and Spanish-language media hours before the ceremony. “I never expected it.”
A drone show honoring Valenzuela is expected after the game against the Colorado Rockies. On Saturday, the team is giving away his bobblehead, and on Sunday, the giveaway is a replica of Valenzuela’s 1981 World Series ring.
Valenzuela broke in with the Dodgers in a huge way in 1981. Besides winning the World Series, he won Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award, the first player to do so in the same year.

During his Columbus Day monologue on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Kimmel suggested an Italian American figure we could celebrate instead of Christopher Columbus – and it’s not bad, actually.
But first, he ran through a comprehensive list of reasons why Columbus was terrible, including noting that he was so “willfully ignorant” that were he alive now, “he could probably run the Republican party.”
“Here’s how you know Columbus Day isn’t so hot anymore,” Kimmel said as he got into his monologue. “There’s no Google doodle for it. There’s nothing. They’d usually have a doodle for the holidays. They had a doodle to celebrate Fairy Bread day. Today, they’re doodle-less.”
Kimmel noted that today is also Indigenous People’s Day, and that we really ought to pick one or the other. “That’s like saying it’s Arbor Day and Chainsaw day. It can’t be both,...

Maury Wills, whose long tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers began the year after the team moved to the West Coast in the late 1950s and included three World Series championships, died September 19 at his home in Sedona, Az, the team said Tuesday. He was 89.
Wills, a five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove-winning shortstop, was a prolific base-stealer credited with helping to bring the craft back to baseball as an offensive strategy. After stealing 50 bases in 1960 in his first year with the Dodgers, in 1962 he became the first player in the modern age to reach 100 steals in a season, finishing with 104 to break Ty Cobb’s record that had stood for 47 years, earning him the Nl Mvp Award. He is 20th on baseball’s all-time steals list.

Vin Scully, the velvet-tongued sports broadcaster known to generations of baseball fans as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died, the team announced Tuesday. He was 94.
Scully’s mark on Los Angeles, baseball and broadcasting history will never be matched. To say he was beloved is a colossal understatement — while most baseball fans could scarcely name a close rival’s play-by-play man, every decent baseball fan gets wistful at the mere mention of Scully.
“He was the voice of the Dodgers, and so much more,” the team wrote. “He was their conscience, their poet laureate, capturing their beauty and chronicling their glory from Jackie Robinson to Sandy Koufax, Kirk Gibson to Clayton Kershaw.”

The Los Angeles Lakers honored one of the city’s greats tonight, hosting a brief tribute before the team’s National Basketball Association game against the Chicago Bulls at Staples Center.
A screen projected a photo of the late Tommy Lasorda in his Dodgers uniform, and quickly gave some highlights of his career, which included championships with the Dodgers and an Olympic gold medal as the manager of the US baseball team. Lasorda died today at 93.
The announcer then asked for a moment of silence for the players and personnel in the darkened arena to honor the former Dodgers manager. Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, which has made Los Angeles the most infected city in the country, there were no fans in attendance.

For decades, the name “Tommy Lasorda” has been synonymous with not just The Dodgers, but also with Los Angeles. Fittingly, it seemed like the whole town took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Hall of Fame manager who guided the Dodgers to two World Championships.
Among the L.A. icons who remembered Lasorda were Magic Johnson, Billy Crystal, Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Lakers, the Rams, USC Trojans Athletics, the L.A.P.D, the chief of the L.A.F.D. and the great Vin Scully.
The Dodgers organization itself posted a lengthy statement that recognized Lasorda’s seventy-one seasons affiliated with the club, as well as his status as one of baseball’s most popular ambassadors.

Tommy Lasorda, the colorful, quotable and revered Los Angeles Dodgers legend who managed the team to two World Series title and four National League pennants in the 1970s and ’80s, died today at 93. The Dodgers announced that the Hall of Famer “suffered a sudden cardiopulmonary arrest at his home” on Thursday night.
Lasorda had been sent home this week after being hospitalized for seven weeks in Orange County, spending much of that time in intensive care.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued the following statement:
“Tommy Lasorda was one of the finest managers our game has ever known. He loved life as a Dodger. His career began as a pitcher in 1949 but he is, of course, best known as the manager of two World Series champions and four pennant-winning clubs. His passion, success, charisma and sense of humor turned him into an international celebrity, a stature that he used to grow our sport.
