Directed by veteran-actress turned filmmaker Hitomi Kuroki, “The Devil Wears Jini-Hitoe Kimono” is a visually impressive movie that focuses though, a bit too much on impression instead of substance, much like its title.
Rai Ito is a young man who has failed 59 times to land a regular job, working mostly part-time in whatever work comes his way. His girlfriend is fed up with his failures, and inevitably dumps him, while his brother’s success in passing the medical school entrance exams, puts even more pressure on him, particularly since he feels that he does not fit even with his family. As the story begins, he is working on setting up an exhibition for classic novel “The Tale of Genji”, which the film synopsizes through a rather appealing retro-style animation. The parts about the two brothers, Ninomiya and Ichinomiya, resonate with him since he has a similar relationship with his younger brother.

Sada Abe, the name that became infamously linked to sexual obsession and desire in 1936. After she killed her lover by erotically asphyxiating him, she cut off his genitals and walked around with them in her kimono until she was arrested a couple of days later. This true story has been fascinating people for many decades and inspired several filmmakers to tell her story. Most famous is “Ai no korida”, internationally known as “In the Realm of the Senses”, a 1976 French-Japanese co-production that shocked audiences with its explicit sex scenes. This film, “Sada: Gesaku ・Abe Sada no shougai”, internationally simply known as “Sada”, tells the same story, but through the vision of director Nobuhiko Obayashi.
With the legacy of “In the Realm of the Senses” preceding it, it is immediately clear that Obayashi made his version of the infamous tale something completely different. He spends the first half...

From The Shining to I Origins, these are just some of the worst offenders when it comes to moving between floors...
This article contains spoilers for just about every film on its list.
I don’t know when it started exactly.
When I was very young, it was fine. I maybe even enjoyed getting on an elevator and being whisked off, but somewhere in the timeline of my life, something changed. I began to dread stepping onto one. My heart would pound, a cold sweat would creep down my neck and my breath would quicken.
“What’s wrong?” a bemused acquaintance would ask as we were about to embark.
“Oh! Nothing, really,” I’d respond as casually as I could for someone suddenly about to lose control of their bowels. “I just thought I might take the stairs. Bit of exercise, you know.”
“But it…it’s 18 flights,...

Hideo Nakata, having directed both this one and The Ring, established himself as the most commercially successful filmmaker of J-Horror. “Dark Water” won awards in festivals all over the world, including the Jury’s Choice Award at the 2009 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. An American remake with the same name was released in 2005. The book and its manga adaptation were also published in English in the Us.

"Yoshimitsu Morita, whose films depicted the absurdity and vulnerability of everyday life in conformist Japan, has died," reports Yuri Kagayama for the AP. "He was 61." His breakthrough came with The Family Game (1983), winner of five Kinema Junpo Awards — Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor (Yusaku Matsuda) and Supporting Actor (Jûzô Itami) — in which Matsuda plays "an offbeat tutor who forms a heartwarming relationship with a young man in a stereotypical middle-class family."
"Though even its most perceptive commentators reduce Kazoku geimu (Family Game) to a critique of 'affluent, middle-class nuclear family life in the city and nose-to-the-grindstone education systems' [Keiko McDonald in 1989], Morita's most widely known film is before all else hilarious," wrote Bob Davis in Senses of Cinema in 2006. "Its laughs derive from inappropriate and idiosyncratic behavior, unseemly frankness, slapstick antics, gross-out tactics, repetitions, exaggerations, explosive contrasts, and unnatural pacing." In Davis's "brazen 'ranking' of Morita's films, Family Game, Deaths in Tokimeki, Sorekara [And Then], Keiho,...

If the quality of mainstream American horror started to wane in the 1990s, that downward trajectory continued unhindered into the 21st century. If a horror movie was in the box office top 10 at any given point, more likely than not it was a remake, or at least a sequel. In a spectacularly unimaginative attempt to revive the genre, studios plundered their back catalogues and churned out remakes of just about every classic post-1970 horror movie, and many of the not-so-classics too. Slasher franchises in particular, many of which barely had any substance the first time around, were revived. James Wan’s movie Saw (2004) was a hit and produced six sequels (though still no Jigsaw Takes Manhattan).
Apparently even more enticing to studios was the prospect of remaking a foreign language movie; since some people simply won’t watch foreign movies then the material is bound to be new to them,...

In horror films, old dark houses have their place, but as hell is other people apartments are far spookier
In Dream Home, the owners of the flat on which Josie Ho is about to exchange contracts suddenly jack the price up beyond her reach, so she goes on a killing spree in the apartment block. Who can blame her? As anyone who has ever been gazumped, gazundered or gaziddled can attest, being cheated out of the property on which you've set your heart is enough to make anyone think bad thoughts, though I'd like to believe not many of us would go as far as Josie in the disembowelling and penis-lopping stakes.
I'm surprised there aren't more slasher movies set in flats. Tenants or flatmates can bring out the psycho in all of us simply by using electric drills in the middle of the night (Michael Keaton in Pacific Heights...
