Prince William broke tradition slightly, by serving in the Royal Air Force instead.

- In 1924, George V fell ill with bronchitis and influenza, and took a cruise on his yacht to recover. In 1928, he fell seriously ill with septicemia and a blood infection, and his son Edward, the Prince of Wales, reigned for the next two years as regent in all but name. The King's recovery was slow, particularly since he was allowed to resume smoking just four days after he was brought to hospital by ambulance. Even after he resumed public duties in 1930, he would never to be the same again. In the years leading up to his death, he suffered from many ailments including pleurisy, chronic obstructive lung disease, bronchitis and emphysema.
