Legendary character actor Doug Jones will reprise his memorable role as Baron Afanas in the sixth and final season of the hit FX comedy series “What We Do in the Shadows.” In an interview with Screen Rant, Jones expressed enthusiasm about returning to the comical vampire character for the show’s conclusion.
The Baron has become a fan-favorite after appearing in 11 episodes across the first five seasons. Jones said playing the bumbling but ambitious Afanas has brought him much joy. “He’s such a silly vampire, always scheming for more power but never quite succeeding,” said Jones. “It’s been great fun for me.”
Show creators have confirmed Baron Afanas will be back, allowing long-time viewers a final chance to enjoy the character’s antics among the vampire housemates. “What We Do in the Shadows” follows the daily lives of four vampires and their human familiar who share a Staten Island home.

Mexican-born auteur Guillermo del Toro hit the Oscar jackpot with his fantastical love story “The Shape of Water” (2017), which took home four prizes including Best Picture and Best Director. But that’s just one of many eye-popping fantasies he has crafted throughout his career. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of del Toro’s films, ranked worst to best.
Del Toro made his feature directing debut with the Spanish-language horror drama “Cronos” (1993), which established him as a maker of dark, visually-stunning fright-fests. The film wrote him a ticket to Hollywood, where he helmed the creepy chiller “Mimic” (1997). Over the next two decades, he would bounce back-and-forth between mainstream American productions and more personal stories in his native language.
It was for “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), a fable about a young Mexican girl escaping into a terrifying fantasy realm during the falangist Spain of 1944, that del Toro reaped his first Oscar bid for Best Original Screenplay.

Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and we hadn’t heard anything about the movie since it started filming eight years ago. Until now. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror will be released through Apple TV+ on October 18th!

Announced way back in 2016, David Lee Fisher was directing a new take on the horror classic Nosferatu, with Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Shape of Water) starring as Count Orlok.
Eight years later, the film finally has a title and release date.
Doug Jones stars as the titular Nosferatu in David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, a remix of the 1922 original with new actors, dialogue, sound, and musical score.
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror premieres October 18 on Apple TV.
This movie is scene-for-scene the same story as the original silent film, but with a new cast and a green screen element for every frame of the movie. “What will be filled in that green screen is a digitally created backdrop from the original film,” Bloody Disgusting has been told.

Last year, we heard that Spyder Dobrofsky – who worked on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away, and made his feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller Spiral – was making a holiday horror movie called Down Below and had assembled a solid cast for the project: the legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus. Now, Down Below has been sent out into the world, as it was given a digital release this week and is available to rent or purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link.

An adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein has long been a dream project for director Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker with such credits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Blade II. He’s been talking about it for at least 17 years – and now he’s actually making it! After previous attempts to get the project going fell through, Netflix stepped up to let del Toro make the Frankenstein movie he’s been dreaming of. They haven’t announced a release date for the film yet, but while we wait for that news to come along, here’s Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein:
Long Road To Production
Del Toro has named Frankenstein as his favorite novel, and in 2007, he told us that the project he “would kill to make” is a faithful “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein. He said that he...

Director Guillermo del Toro has been spending this year working on one of his dream projects, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale Frankenstein that is set up at the Netflix streaming service. Frankenstein is believed to have started filming on February 12th – and even though the production was only expected to last about five months, wrapping up on July 5th, somehow it’s still going! We had heard that filming would take place in Ontario, Canada, and possibly in London, England, but cameras are currently rolling in Edinburgh, Scotland, parts of which have been made to look like Victorian England. Images of that transformation, as well as Oscar Isaac in character can be seen here:

We went into Deadpool & Wolverine expecting the movie to close the door on the Fox-verse. Instead, it celebrated Earth-10005 and set the stage for that world to continue to flourish alongside Earth-616/the Sacred Timeline.
While we'd hoped for cameos, the threequel upped the ante by taking us into the Void before giving Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), Gambit (Channing Tatum), and X-23 (Dafne Keen) a second chance. It felt really special but has got us thinking...which other Earth-10005 heroes and villains deserve a second chance in the MCU?
This could be in an upcoming Multiverse Saga project (which seems most likely) or even in the softly rebooted MCU which is rumoured to be the plan for this shared world post-Avengers: Secret Wars. Hopefully, the names before surprise you!

There was a time when Matt Damon was so renowned, his very name would give away the ending of a movie.
14 Gary Oldman
Oldman had on so much makeup in 2001’s Hannibal that he requested to “do it anonymously” for the theatrical release. But one Nathan Murray was credited as “Mr. Oldman's assistant,” which kind of gave away the game.
13 Matt Damon
Christopher Nolan thought having Damon’s name attached to 2014’s Interstellar would give away much of the story, because people would have a built-in expectation of him being a “good guy.”
12 Gene Hackman
Hackman had a big part in 1993’s The Firm, but Tom Cruise was given humongous billing that made his name the same size as the movie title in some instances. Upon learning that, Hackman was basically like: Screw it, don’t even credit me.

While he hasn’t experienced any major paranormal events, del Toro could confirm that he felt the presence of an evil force in the room in Aberdeen Scotland. "Some secrets are buried deep where evil dwells." Huh? What does that even mean? Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Down Below, the latest from filmmaker Spyder Dobrofsky. This hasn't played at many festivals and will be dumped on VOD this fall in time for horror season. On the 20th anniversary of the gruesome Christmas Eve murders at St. Agnes church, a demonic preacher returns to haunt that same town's residents. Together and apart, two innocent residents are forced to face their own demons as well as a real one, who goes by the name of Mr. Monday. A gripping psychological horror movie with a shocking plot twist, this one stars Eric Roberts, Doug Jones, Bai Ling, Alexis Knapp, Hutch Dano, Christopher Livingston, and Greg Kriek. It has a wildly impressive cast for a film going direct-to-vod, but this looks very cheap and cheesy and just plain bad.

At the beginning of "Star Trek: Discovery," the character of Saru (Doug Jones) was a fearful figure. Saru is a Kelpien, a species that had, for many centuries, been raised as a food source for another, hungrier species. Kelpiens had evolved to think like prey, knowing that they would be, at any moment, hunted and processed into meat nuggets. Kelpiens accepted their fate because of a strange quirk of their biology; when Kelpiens reached a certain age, a series of behind-the-ears ganglia began to change color. This indicated that they were about to become feral, turning from gentle farm animals into vicious killers. To prevent this, Saru planned on committing ritual suicide.
It turned out, however, that Kelpien transformation was mere propaganda. When Saru reached maturity, his ganglia fell off, and he was suddenly more confident and open. He went from being fearful all the time to being frank, friendly,...

Acclaimed horror director James Wan is reportedly in discussions to helm a remake of the 1954 film “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” If finalized, the project would mark Universal Pictures’ newest effort to revive its iconic monster franchises for modern audiences.
The original movie, directed by Jack Arnold, tells the story of scientists who discover an ancient aquatic humanoid in the Amazon River. Featuring groundbreaking 3D effects and practical creature costumes, “Creature from the Black Lagoon” is considered foundational to the horror genre.
Wan, known for hits like “Saw,” “The Conjuring,” and “Insidious,” brings considerable experience directing horror films. However, faithfully adapting the iconic Gill-man monster poses challenges. The original practical effects and performances by Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning made the Gill-man viscerally terrifying. Some worry a remake may over-rely on computer-generated imagery (CGI), harming its tactile essence.

In a world… in which movies are just as much products as they are art, studios need to sell the latest releases to the broadest possible audiences. That means that they not only need to craft trailers promoting the films, but they need to misrepresent what films are really about.
On a certain level, that tendency toward misrepresentation makes sense. Trailers only have a couple of minutes to get people interested in the film, and complex works of art don’t lend themselves to such simplicities.
That said, it’s hard to see a masterpiece reduced to just a few sizzle moments, trying their best to ensure that the audience won’t be surprised or challenged by what they’re about to see. Here are some of the worst offenders in cinema history, movies that ended up to be so much more than what these teasers promised.

Hearing that Jesse Moss and Tony Gerber’s documentary concerns a war game conducted to test the country’s readiness for a national security crisis, it was easy to imagine a scenario involving an international threat posed by, say, China or Russia. No such luck. It turns out that War Game chronicles an exercise revolving around a threat from within, namely the sort of insurrection that occurred on Jan. 6, 2021. The film, receiving its U.S. theatrical premiere at NYC’s Film Forum, serves as a bracing reminder that such an event could occur again, and indeed seems even more likely should a certain Republican nominee for president decide to incite more violence.

Attention all vampire comedy fans – the wait is almost over! FX just announced that the final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” starts next month. I know we’ve all been on pins and needles waiting to find out what happens in the end to Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and the rest of the gang.
The show is really special because even though it’s about vampires trying to fit in with humans, it finds a way to make you care about the characters. Over the past few seasons we’ve gotten to know them really well and seen them change and grow. I especially love following Laszlo’s crazy experiments and the will-they-or-won’t-they deal with Nandor and Guillermo.
This season promises to tie up all those loose ends while giving us some new adventures too. It looks like Guillermo is having a bit of an identity crisis...

The character of Ryn (Noah Averbach-Katz) only appeared in three episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," but he did leave an impression. Ryn, a blue-skinned Andorian, was introduced in the show's third season, shortly after the title ship flew through an aperture in time, and wound up in the year 3188 (having departed the year 2258). In the ensuing 930 years, the galaxy suffered through a massive spatial cataclysm that caused almost every starship in flight to spontaneously explode. This cataclysm, nicknamed "the Burn," cause the Federation to almost entirely collapse, resulting in a mercantile, capitalist system to rise in its place. The galaxy was now ruled largely by a mob-like entity called the Emerald Chain, a slave-based trading organization overseen by the vicious Orion Osyraa (Janet Kidder).
Osyraa had Ryn in her employ. Ryn had signed a contract, making him Osyraa's slave for life. He previously tried to stage a rebellion, but the...

If there is another insurrection, the government is prepared. So is the sentiment behind simulation-documentary “War Game,” which thrusts government officials into an all-too-real scenario.
Documentarians Jesse Moss and Tony Gerber co-direct the feature centering on a group of national-security experts ranging from former senators to CNN pundits as they stage an elaborate war game to anticipate another insurrection.
Moss previously directed “Girls State” with Amanda McBaine, which also centered on a mock-government scenario. The sequel to “Boys State” debuted at Sundance, just like “War Game.”
The “War Game” synopsis reads: A real-life political thriller set on January 6, 2025, “War Game” imagines a nationwide insurrection in which members of the U.S. military defect to support the losing Presidential candidate, while the winning candidate and his advisors — played by an all-star roster of senior officials from the last five administrations — war games the crisis in the White House Situation Room. Actress Michelle Yeoh is known for her work in the films Police Story 3: Supercop, Yes, Madam, and more. The actress won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, making her the first Asian-origin actress to win the leading role award.
Yeoh also starred as Philippa Georgiou in the Star Trek universe. While she appeared as a guest star in Star Trek: Discovery, she reprised her role in Star Trek: Short Treks and will be seen in a film centered around her character. While she has been vocal about her excitement for the franchise, another actor from Discovery was keen on returning.

One of the directors of the Screambox horror movie Night of the Missing, Matthew Hersh makes his feature directorial debut with If It Bleeds, which grows its cast this week.
Bonnie Aarons (The Nun), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), Kirby Bliss Blanton (The Green Inferno), Gigi Gustin (American Grit) and Andy Davoli (The Sopranos) have joined the previously announced Doug Jones (Hellboy), Dee Wallace (Cujo), Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier), Justin Miles (Adult Swim’s Yule Log) and Krsy Fox (Bury the Bride).
If It Bleeds is said to be “an anthology-style crime thriller.”
“The film follows Corcoran’s Diane Winters and her cameraman Simon, played by Miles, as they uncover a mysterious series of gruesome murders that unfold throughout the course of a chaotic and violent day. As events unfold, the duo become players in a sinister situation even more menacing than either one could have imagined.”

In Alexander Payne's recent dramedy "The Holdovers," the Oscar-nominated Paul Giamatti played a grumpy (but charismatic) teacher, largely hated by the student body. It seems that the students of Starfleet Academy are about to hate him even more, as — according to a new report from Variety — the actor has been cast as the central villain of the upcoming "Starfleet Academy" TV series. The Variety report says that Giamatti will serve as an as-yet unnamed recurring antagonist throughout the "Star Trek" show's first season, and that his character will have "a sinister connection to the past of one of the (yet to be cast) cadets." Variety didn't specify if he'd be playing a human or another alien species.
Speculation may now commence. Will he be playing a bitter former professor? An escaped convict and serial killer who just happens to be the father of one of the main characters? A charismatic cult leader,...

A new documentary honoring and exploring the history of Rickwood, a field that once served as home to the Negro Leagues’ Birmingham Black Barons, will be the focus of a new documentary that debuts June 11 on Hearst Television’s Very Local app.
“Rickwood: The Soul of Birmingham,” produced by Burning Sands Productions, explores the legacy of the Black Barons and even offers a roadmap for towns across America faced with tough decisions about their aging ballparks. Among local luminaries offering reminiscences in the documentary are area natives, including former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones and popular actor and comedian Roy Wood Jr.
“This story is told through the voice of Rickwood Field,” said Laura Ling, vice president of programming at Very Local, in a statement. “It may be an inanimate object, but it comes to life to share stories of the ghosts of the past and the promise of tomorrow.

The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.
Avenue 5
Avenue 5 is a sci-fi dark comedy series created by Armando Iannucci. The Max series is set in the future and mostly in space and it follows the story of the crew and passengers on board the interplanetary cruise ship named Avenue 5. Star Trek: Discovery just ended after five seasons on the air. The Paramount+ spinoff series concluded the story seeing the Discovery captain, Michael Burham (Sonequa Martin-Green), trying to find the Progenitors’ technology, which was used to create humanoid life. Meanwhile, her crew set out to find and rescue her.
Here is how Star Trek: Discovery ended and what is next for the franchise.
How Did Star Trek: Discovery End?
Star Trek: Discovery’s series finale started where the penultimate episode ended. Captain Michael Burham disappeared through a portal and woke up somewhere with infinite gateways that led to exotic worlds. While there, she saw Moll (Eve Harlow). The two fought and then decided to work together.

You know the drill by now: This article contains major spoilers for the series finale of "Star Trek: Discovery."
"Discovery" is over; long live "Discovery." At the end of the day, the somewhat divisive "Trek" series managed to go out on its own terms (as /Film's Jacob Hall accurately foresaw in his review of the final season's premiere) and delivered a fitting sendoff for much of the established cast. We laughed, we cried, and we were kept fairly entertained by a planet-hopping race against time that dug deep into franchise lore and tied things together with the mysterious Progenitors. But as the credits rolled on the finale and we bid farewell one last time to characters like Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Saru (Doug Jones), and all the rest, perhaps you were left with the same nagging feeling that I had: "Wait, that's it?"

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Discovery has always been about change. The series started with a bang in 2017, complete with radically-altered Klingons and a heretofore unseen adopted sister to Spock. From that audacious beginning, Discovery became something more like a standard Star Trek series, while also retaining its own unique (and much more emotional) approach to storytelling.
To be sure, Discovery isn’t for everyone. Its focus on single protagonist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and its emphasis on emotion over logic made it very different from most Trek series. But even the most traditional Trekkie can appreciate its best major additions to franchise lore.
Into the 32nd Century
It’s hard for Trekkies to avoid rolling our eyes when we read announcements about upcoming Trek projects. Another reboot, another prequel. Sure, Strange New Worlds has been wonderful, but that’s the exception. Too much of new...

After five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery, the series that launched a new era of Star Trek programming on television, has come to an end with the finale “Life, Itself.” Leaning heavily on the science fiction action and prominently connecting with Star Trek elements introduced in the ‘90s, Discovery’s fifth and final season brought the adventures of Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to a satisfying close. That conclusion includes a coda that was added after the creative team learned Discovery would not be renewed for a sixth season. The additional scenes were filmed to provide the finale with greater closure.
At the helm of the fifth season was Michelle Paradise, who has been an executive producer on the series since the second season and co-showrunner, with series co-creator Alex Kurtzman, since Discovery season 3. Paradise recently sat down with Den of Geek to...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Star Trek: Discovery series finale “Life, Itself.”] “Let’s fly.” Star Trek: Discovery ends the only way it can, with Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in the captain’s chair—but this is years in the future, and she’s now admiral. The leap into her future—which included a dream-like scene of Michael with the rest of the crew, all young, the ages they were for the rest of the series—was added after news of the cancellation came. Before then, Michael is faced with a decision about what to do with the Progenitors’ tech and everyone gathers for Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina’s (Tara Rosling) wedding. Plus, Michael finds out Kovich’s (David Cronenberg) name: Agent Daniels. Yes, as in the temporal agent on Enterprise. Below, executive producer Michelle Paradise breaks down the ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Star Trek: Discovery series finale “Life, Itself.”] It was an emotional ending for Star Trek: Discovery, on and offscreen, for the cast. The Paramount+ series ended after five seasons, and what this show got that very rarely happens is the chance to go back and film a coda. In it, years in the future after Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina’s (Tara Rosling) wedding, Admiral Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) takes Discovery on one last journey, and while doing so, she sees herself young again, back with her crew on the bridge. Apologies to those who thought the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 might finally give us some concrete information about what the Progenitors’ mysterious and potentially universe-altering technology might be, because it doesn’t. Although “Lagrange Point” is a fast-paced and fairly action-packed hour, it is also largely setup for next week’s finale, and answers none questions any of us have about the larger story of this season. This isn’t exactly a new problem for Discovery—a show that has long struggled with pacing—but suddenly everything just feels uncomfortably rushed.
We now have a single episode left to find Michael and Moll, stop a Breen war, locate the magical MacGuffin technology we’ve been chasing all season, wrap up the Progenitors story, and say a final goodbye to this show and its characters. It feels like there can’t...
