In the latest sign that The Weather Channel has original programming in its forecast, the network has hired Scripps Networks exec Mary Ellen Iwata for the newly created position of VP Original Content and Development. She will be based in New York and tasked with developing, commissioning and acquiring original programming. Iwata was brought aboard by Michael Dingley, who recently joined as Svp Content and Development; the pair worked together at Hgtv. Those moves follow the appointment of The Weather Channel Evp and Gm Bob Walker, who was brought aboard last month to help spearhead the original programming lineup.

One year after launching its first channel outside North America, Scripps Networks International is now distributing two brands -- Food Network and Fine Living Network -- through six feeds to 60 countries in eight languages across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The channels are available after 12 months in 15 million television households worldwide.
Leading the distribution of high-definition lifestyle content globally, and embracing digital brand extensions for online and mobile platforms, signify milestones Scripps Networks International attained during its first year of operation.
"It was at Mipcom last year that we announced our intention to begin channel businesses alongside the existing program syndication in the global market," said Greg Moyer, president of Scripps Networks International. "We have just begun to introduce the power of Scripps lifestyle brands to audiences worldwide. Launched In November 2009, Food Network U.K., for example, has proven to be Sky's most successful lifestyle channel launch in the past four years.

U.S. turnout widens Banff market value
TORONTO -- The Banff World Television Festival is on its way to becoming more of a commercial TV market, with the organizers successfully recruiting leading American programmers to the event. Robert Montgomery, CEO of the festival, said the U.S. contingent set to attend the annual TV industry gathering will be the largest ever as Europeans look to do deals there. Despite being a Canadian TV festival, Montgomery said that his discussions with European producers and broadcasters at MIPTV in April and elsewhere confirming their attendance at Banff was very much contingent on being able to do business with Americans. Those confirmed as part of the American contingent at Banff include David Lyle, chief operating officer and general manager of the Fox Reality Channel, Lisa Berger of E! Networks, Keith Brown of MTV Networks International, Elizabeth Cullen of Oxygen Media, Maryanne Culpepper of National Geographic Television, and Channing Dawson and Mary Ellen Iwata of Scripps Networks.
