Cinematographer Mandy Walker has made history as the first female recipient of the Australian Cinematographers Society (Acs) Milli Award.
Prior to receiving the ceremony’s highest award, Walker became the first woman in 102 years to win the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers’ Best Feature Film Award, and was nominated for both a BAFTA and Academy Award for her work on “Elvis.”
“I’m incredibly proud and honored to be the first woman to win this award,” said Walker. “Here’s to all the other glass ceiling breakers who will come after this.”

“I knew Michelle Yeoh was gonna give an amazing performance which she absolutely did, but it was Ke Huy Quan who stole the show,” wrote Letterboxd user Shreesh. “The innocence in his character and at the same time the badass version of his character is portrayed brilliantly by him. He was terrific.” You can hear “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Quan getting choked up at those words in a new Oscars video featuring various nominees reading praise they’ve received online. Watch above.

The films up for the 2023 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” and “The Whale.” Our current odds show that “Elvis” (69/20) is favored to win, followed in order by “The Whale” (18/5), “The Batman” (9/2), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (9/2).
Each of this category’s last five consecutive lineups has included a 70% first-time nominee majority, but this year’s rookie group is 16% smaller. The present subset is comprised of both “All Quiet on the Western Front” artists (Linda Eisenhamerova and Heike Merker) as well as two craftspeople from “The Whale” (Annemarie Bradley-Sherron and Judy Chin) and one each from “The Batman” (Michael Fontaine), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Camille Friend), and “Elvis” (Jason Baird).

“It’s not another superhero movie,” Camille Friend, the hair department lead on both “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” says of Ryan Coogler’s Marvel sequel. “It’s a movie with heart, with soul, and we care about what is happening on the screen and behind the screen, and we have people of color [on both sides]. And we can do excellence in a movie — we do that.”
An Oscar nominee for her work on “Wakanda Forever,” Friend estimates that probably 95 percent of the “Black Panther” crew returned for the sequel’s shoot in Atlanta in summer of 2021. And it was a tough return for everyone after Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman, died of cancer less than a year earlier.
“Everybody was pretty broken still and were grieving,” says Friend. “One of the most beautiful things is that [director] Ryan [Coogler] had us all get on a plane and go to Chadwick’s...

“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.
These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

While “Batman” and “Elvis” led the Make-up and Hairstylists Guild noms with three apiece, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” hair department head Camille Friend’s nomination could have been a precursor to her Oscar nom. She could also make history by becoming the third Black hair department

Hairdressing is a family business for Camille Friend. The esteemed hair designer, whose 25 years in the film industry has included credits on many Marvel, Warner Bros. and Disney movies and collaborations with Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele, Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow, last month earned her first career Oscar nomination for her rich, complex work on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Friend’s nomination marks just the third year that the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category has included a Black artist, after Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson (winners in 2021 for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Carla Farmer and Stacey Morris (nominated last year for “Coming 2 America”).

Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).

Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther” made history four years ago when it won the first Oscar for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — in fact, it won three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Now, the highly anticipated sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has been nominated for five Academy Awards and could very likely win the same number of trophies. Just like last time around, the sequel is the favorite to win Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter. Its other potential victories are for a pair of A-list superstars: Angela Bassett in Best Supporting Actress and Rihanna in Best Song. (“Wakanda” is also nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects.)
The original blockbuster received a total of seven Oscar nominations including a coveted Best Picture bid, a first (and so far only) such feat for an MCU movie. “Black Panther” won for costumes, production design and score,...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” breakout star Stephanie Hsu learned that she’d earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination on Tuesday just after her flight landed in Los Angeles. And the first text message of congratulations to reach her was short and to the point: “Holy s—.”
“I knew that the announcements were happening today and I was flying back from Sydney. I woke up just before it was happening. And then I put my phone on the little tray next to my coffee and it just started going zoing zoing!” Hsu said with a laugh. “I got the news sort of right as I was landing, so I thought I was hallucinating.”
Hsu was just one of many nominees from “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as the film topped all other entries with 11 overall nominations, including acting nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett made superhero cinema history on Tuesday as the first woman, the first person of color and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for their performance in a comic book adaptation. It’s Bassett’s second Oscar nomination; her first came 29 years ago for best actress for 1993’s Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
But while Bassett’s nomination breaks several Oscar barriers, “Wakanda Forever” failed to equal the best picture nod earned by 2018’s “Black Panther” — the first superhero movie ever nominated for Oscar’s top prize. The film was also nominated for Ruth E. Carter for costume design; “Lift Me Up” for original song; Camille Friend and Joel Harlow for makeup and hairstyling; and Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, Hanzhi Tang and Dan Sudick for visual effects.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards on the eve of academy members starting to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, seven are vying for these precursor prizes.
“The Batman” and “Elvis” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Amsterdam,” “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Blonde” earned two each; and and “The Whale” has one.
Three films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Crimes of the Future” and “Emancipation” — were snubbed by the guild.
Conversely, several of the Muahs favorites — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Menu,” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

When “Black Panther” hair department head Camille Friend and makeup department head Joel Harlow reunited to work on the film’s blockbuster sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the first challenge they had to meet was literally all wet. Because the new film introduces Talokan to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the undersea kingdom ruled by Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia), Friend and Harlow had to figure out how to make sure their hair and makeup work could withstand the underwater conditions – a complication some productions no doubt would’ve just worked around.
“A lot of films, when you end up shooting underwater stuff, it’s dry for wet,” Harlow tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “This wasn’t. This was wet for wet. And even when the actors are out of the water, they’re still wet – you don’t come out of the water and you’re suddenly dry.

Can Marvel strike Oscar gold twice with the “Black Panther” series? Yes — in fact, as yet another Best Picture contender, “Wakanda Forever” could even surpass the first film’s three historic craft wins and six nominations. That’s because director Ryan Coogler not only made an emotionally stirring tribute to late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, but also raised the stakes with the introduction of the ancient underwater civilization of Talokan.
The sequel is set against Wakanda princess Shuri’s (Letitia Wright) rite of passage and the power play of Talokan King Namor (Tenoch Huerta). The Atlantis-inspired Talokan functions as a powerful parallel kingdom and a major threat to Wakanda, requiring its own ambitious and meticulous world building.

Samuel L. Jackson‘s ubiquitous on-screen presence is due in large part to his 140-plus movie and TV roles and his uncanny ability to be both a credit card spokesman and Marvel’s Nick Fury.
Jackson is also a consummate actor who loves losing himself in roles with the help of hair and makeup. For years, he relied on award-winning wig guru Robert Louis Stevenson for everything from his moist Jheri curl in Pulp Fiction to his rope-like dreds in The Caveman’s Valentine.

The panel, “Hair and Makeup Equity – Changing the Industry Standard,” is set for May 11.

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.
“Vice,” which we are predicting will win the Oscar, contends in period/character makeup as well as special makeup effects while its closest Academy Awards rival, “Black Panther” is up for just special makeup effects. Our third-place Oscar contender “Mary Queen of Scots” vies for both period/character makeup and hairstyling

This Oscar season Best Makeup and Hairstyling was all about dramatic transformations, making Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Christian Bale (“Vice”), and Tilda Swinton (“Suspiria”) unrecognizable as Freddie Mercury, Dick Cheney, and an 85-year-old male psychotherapist and horrifying witch.
Likewise, Eva Melander was made unrecognizable as a troll in the fantastical “Border,” Sweden’s Best Foreign Language entry. And the sprawling cast of Marvel’s “Black Panther” undergo dramatic transformations to become the citizens of Wakanda.
Transforming Malek into Mercury for “Bohemian Rhapsody” required reverse aging on the part of makeup and hair designer Jan Sewell. That’s because the climactic Live Aid concert was shot first. The task required an assortment of wigs, eye makeup, and artificial nose to compensate for Malek’s smaller eyes.
But the biggest challenge was re-creating Mercury’s legendary teeth because of his overbite. Sewell had three sets made to find the right fit for Malek.
