I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

Cyndi Lauper has shared her new track “Oh, Dolores,” made for the new Prime Video series The Horror of Dolores Roach. Listen to it below.
The new single coincides with the series debut, in which Lauper makes a special guest appearance. “Oh, Dolores” sounds like it could’ve been a deep cut in her discography, blending exciting, scrappy punk with the bassy groove of new wave. Lyrically, the song serves as a foreboding message to the series’ main character: “Oh Dolores, you’ve come undone/ It happens every time, now isn’t it a crime?/ How they drag you down, Dolores,” Lauper sings.
The Horror of Dolores Roach is based on the hit Spotify fiction podcast of the same name, created and written by Aaron Mark. The first season focuses on Dolores, a woman who effectively starts her life over after having just been released from a 16-year prison sentence.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” is the kind of show that tries to do everything at once instead of doing one thing well. Is it a horror show? Is it a comedy? Is it a riff on “Sweeney Todd”? Is it a character study? Is it camp? Is it commentary? Yes, it’s all these things, and yes, other series have lumped many-a-genre and multiple goals into successful ongoing stories, but that first requires identifying what elements work well together.
Good horror isn’t just gore. Good comedy is, well, pretty subjective. But “Sweeney Todd” isn’t just about cannibalism, camp is earned, and commentary takes prolonged focus. The Amazon Prime Video series, adapted by creator, writer, and executive producer Aaron Mark from his one-woman play (“Empanada Loca”) and subsequent podcast (“The Horror of Dolores Roach”), never cooks any one ingredient long enough for its flavor to stand out in an overstuffed stew.

Cannibal stories are a tough nut to crack as they automatically turn off a large part of the audience just from their central concept. Yet, as proven by shows such as Santa Clarita Diet, there is still an audience for them. Adapted from the hit podcast, The Horror of Dolores Roach also takes a ton of inspiration from Sweeney Todd. If you know anything about that story, then it’s fairly easy to see where Dolores Roach goes during its runtime. And there are many satisfying twists and turns along the way to keep you interested. But it’s the performances that really make the show stand out. So I was excited to be able to chat with stars Justina Machado, Alejandro Hernadez, Kita Updike, and K. Todd Freeman about just how much they bring to the table. Because it’s a lot. So join me as we get into...

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

The story explores the bond that formed when the two met in the days leading up to one of Ali’s most anticipated fights, with one described as “a vibrant and audacious youth, the other a resentful and widely resented relic — each fighting to form their public personas and shape their legacies amidst the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-1960s.”

In “The Same Storm,” it’s a welcome surprise to see Elaine May appear as one of the faces in writer-director Peter Hedges’ impressively diverse and starry ensemble, who take turns contributing scenes about the challenges of life during lockdown. May portrays spiky Ruth Lipsman Berg, who hops on a teleconference with a new doctor and her home health aide. Daphne Rubin-Vega is Lupe, her concerned caregiver. Raza Jaffrey is the gentle but quite-clear physician trying to ascertain if Ruth has contracted the coronavirus.
Ruth was in the scene right before this one — talking with her daughter, a webcam girl — so we’re aware she’s gotten dolled up for the doctor’s call. Like a good Jewish mother, she asked the doc if he’s single. If so, she has a daughter. Forget that in the prior scene, her call to said daughter (Mary-Louise Parker) was less than kind.

Revisiting the early days of the pandemic is not on most of our to-do lists, but viewers may find “The Same Storm” worth a look all the same. Inspired by the Damian Barr quote (“We are not all in the same boat. But we are all in the same storm”) that opens the film, writer-director Peter Hedges (“Ben Is Back”) captures the raw emotions of that time using just iPhones and laptops. His intimate deep dive into the lives of 24 characters leaves virtually no aspect of the pandemic uncovered.
Although Hedges enlists several recognizable actors — including Mary-Louise Parker, Judith Light, Elaine May and Sandra Oh, along with slightly newer faces like Raúl Castillo and Moses Ingram — the drama is solidly centered on the pandemic.
Parker plays sex worker Roxy, to whom Castillo’s Nurse Joey turns to relieve some of the stress from the barrage of death brought about by the pandemic.

For six enthralling weeks, viewers of “The Rehearsal” have been circling back to the same question: Is Nathan Fielder’s mind-bending HBO series real or fake? We asked it when the mattress-hoarding, number-spotting Robbin seemed too good to be true, and again when he claimed his edited footage was “completely aimed at making me look bad.” We asked it when Angela took an apathetic approach to her elaborate audition for motherhood, and then questioned the target of our suspicion when it appeared she may have been acting the whole time. We asked it, along with Fielder himself, when Nathan spotted a grocery store sticker on a “freshly picked” green pepper, except only he was able to move on by simply turning the telling vegetable around.
Of course, limiting “The Rehearsal” to a binary viewpoint — real or fake, this or that...

At its core, “The Rehearsal” is a rather simple series to explain. Creator, director, and star Nathan Fielder sets up practice sessions to help various people find the best way to tackle their problems. They could be confessing a secret to a friend (and using the rehearsals to deduce the safest approach), or they could be weighing a major life decision (and trying to decide which path is right for them). Then, after being coached until they’re comfortable, they attempt to enact the agreed-upon plan in real life.
The concept, as well as its largely benevolent intent, isn’t far removed from Fielder’s 2013 Comedy Central classic, “Nathan for You.” Fielder narrates the episodes. He’s active on both sides of the camera, and rather than give a boost to small businesses, his overarching goal is to help each subject overcome an obstacle.
But the rehearsals in “The Rehearsal” are stunningly intricate.

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.

Tracy Letts’ The Minutes would be one of the most thrilling new plays on Broadway this season even if recent real-life events hadn’t made it seem as uncanny as it is funny and, ultimately, disarming. The Minutes – there are a brisk 90 of them in all – begins as one thing and ends up quite another, and every step along the way is so finely rendered that we’re too busy savoring the moment to see what’s waiting just ahead.
Featuring an impeccable cast headed by Noah Reid – the Schitt’s Creek star makes a wonderful Broadway debut here – The Minutes reunites playwright and cast member Letts with his August: Osage County director Anna D. Shapiro, and together they find once again the eccentric, perfect balance of laugh-out-loud humor, dark undercurrents and emotional violence that made the prize-winning August unforgettable.

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

The Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes is delaying its performance dates by two weeks this spring. The play, starring Schitt’s Creek actor Noah Reid, Letts, Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller and others, will now begin previews at Studio 54 on April 2, with opening night set for April 17.
The previous dates were about two weeks earlier.
Though the production has not indicated a reason for the delay, other shows have initiated similar spring delays due to the recent Omicron surge and its impact on rehearsal schedules, among other things.
The Minutes had already begun previews in spring 2020 when the Covid pandemic shutdown hit. At the time, the play was staged at the Cort Theatre. A planned renovation prompted the production’s move to the Studio 54 venue.
Also during the production’s hiatus, original star Armie Hammer withdrew amidst sexual misconduct allegations. Reid was later cast in the role.

FBI: Most Wanted's Julian McMahon Discusses the Duality of an Intense, Action-Packed Holiday Episode
FBI: Most Wanted‘s fall finale is not only different in that it will air an hour earlier (this Tuesday at 9/8c), but in how it represents a “huge departure” for the CBS procedural, says series lead Julian McMahon.
The holiday-themed outing opens festively enough with McMahon’s Special Agent Jess Lacroix out Christmas shopping with daughter Tali (YaYa Gosselin), girlfriend Sarah (Jen Landon) and his dad Byron (Terry O’Quinn). But just as they run into FBI colleague Sheryll Barnes (Roxy Sternberg) and her expectant wife Charlotte (Fedna Jacquet), gunshots ring out across the mall, as three masked and armored shooters terrorize shoppers.
