Ah Ying.On a recent flight back home to Hong Kong, I was browsing a playlist of “Hong Kong Classics” on the inflight entertainment. Expecting the same old Jackie Chan martial arts films or neon-drenched melancholia by Wong Kar-wai, I was surprised to see Ah Ying (1983) on the list; after all, it is not a popular film internationally, even though it did garner critical attention in Hong Kong for taking home the 1984 Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Editing. Unlike the regular commercially successful hot-blooded action films or postmodern and nostalgic arthouse films, Ah Ying is at the other end of the spectrum of Hong Kong cinema, quietly documenting facets of histories we very often omit to make space for more memorable, grand narratives of Hong Kong.Ah Ying revolves around the real-life story of its lead actress, Hui So-ying (playing Ah Ying), who divides...

Lee Broughton returns with a critique of Hong Kong filmmaker Ronny Yu’s magical, mystical and martial arts-laden reimagining of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Relocating the Bard’s tale to ancient China results in our star-crossed lovers from warring clans being suitably redrawn: one is a super warrior while the other is a deadly assassin. Stylish cinematography, grand looking sets, stylised interludes, good fight choreography and an abundance of excellent wire work effects result in a very classy looking period action piece.

The gambling movie is something that seems to have become a genre of its own over the years in Hong Kong. From the Hui Brothers’ “Games Gamblers Play” to the numerous spin offs of Jing Wang’s 1989 classix “God of Gamblers”, nothing better represents Hk society’s aspiration for wealth. Indeed, “The Gambling Ghost” hedges its own bets by featuring three Sammo Hungs!
Fatty (Sammo Hung) is a failing gambler working as a valet, whilst continuing to disappoint his more straight laced father (Sammo Hung). An encounter with a car thief (Nina Li Chi) finds Fatty losing his job and one of his friends (of whom is captured by gangsters). His grandfather (Sammo Hung!) returns as a ghost to help, promising to make him wealthy if he takes revenge for his murder. Hijinks and flying fists ensue as the wayward Fatty finds himself unable to avoid a final confrontation.
