WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Today's feature is not your typical slasher flick... in fact, it's not typical of anything, except maybe the decade in which it was made (it was completed in 1983), and it proudly defies any simple or logical explanation for what it is, or even why it exists. The first feature film from director Gorman Bechard (best known to horror fans for the crazed slasher satire Psychos in Love), Disconnected is better described for what it isn't than what it is: while it does depict a series of bloody murders, it isn't really a by-the-numbers slasher; while it has oddball pretensions of artiness, it's not an experimental/art-house film; and it's hardly ever been seen by the public, outside of a very limited VHS run. I was exposed to Disconnected just last weekend, via a very rare 16mm print at a “Secret Sixteen” screening at the Jumpcut Cafe in Los Angeles... and...

Immediately after the sold-out screening of Gorman Bechard's documentary Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, the first questions asked of the film's director at the Q&A were about something many audience members may have had on their minds: "Why didn't you use any of The Replacements' songs in your documentary? Was the rock doc's lack of 'Mats tracks due to copyright issues? Wouldn't you have put music in the documentary if you had been able to get it?"
Fair enough. Color Me Obsessed may be just about the only movie shown as part of the Drafthouse's signature Music Mondays programming that had not a single note of music. Instead, the documentary -- true to its title -- examines the fervent fandom surrounding the iconic '80s rock band from Minneapolis, rather than presenting the band's greatest hits interspersed with archival footage and photos.

Last year, The A.V. Club chatted with director Gorman Bechard about his fantastic Replacements documentary, Color Me Obsessed, which profiled the seminal Twin Cities group without actually featuring the band or its music in the film. Bechard is once again focusing his lens on a pioneering Minnesota-born band: Hüsker Dü. But this time around, Grant Hart will be the sole star and interview subject. The new movie, Every Everything, will profile the hardcore trailblazer, from his early days meeting Bob Mould at a St. Paul record shop, to the group’s drug-muddled breakup after nearly a decade of ...

Gorman Bechard’s Color Me Obsessed is the rare music documentary that lavishes admiration not only onto its subject, rowdy Minneapolis cult rock band The Replacements, but on the band’s fans as well. The doc doesn’t feature a single song by The Replacements, nor does it feature interviews with any of the three surviving members. Instead, Bechard lets the fans tell the story. Over the course of the film, he interviews dozens of subjects: the musicians, misfits, and devotees whose formative years were sound-tracked by The Replacements. We hear conflicting opinions about nearly everything – favorite songs, band dynamics, the point at which things turned sour. And we hear story after story about how the band changed (and in some cases saved) people’s lives.

Color Me Obsessed: A Film About the Replacements

Independent rock music inspires the kind of fandom that defies simple logic, transcending the bounds of what’s meant to represent taking a “healthy interest” in an obscure cultural property. There’s a reason that Michael Azerrad’s book on American indie rock fandom, Our Band Could Be Your Life, features a segment on ramshackle Minnesotan rockers The Replacements – as the diverse lineup of talking heads in Gorman Bechard’s unusual rock-doc Color Me Obsessed attests, the Paul Westerberg-fronted quartet (then trio) bore its way into the emotional lives of its fans like few others.
Over a clearly excessive 123 minutes, Obsessed tracks the band – also featuring mercurial, preternaturally talented guitarist Bob Stinson, his barely-teenaged brother Tommy on bass and “nice-guy” drummer Chris Mars, who were actually the three founding members – from their...

This year, Pop Montreal, an annual smrgasboard of concerts and music-themed films, celebrates its 10th anniversary. This year, film topics include legendary folkie Phil Ochs, The Replacements, Alan McGee and Creation Records, Aice Donut, and the Vancouver punk scene, among others. The fest runs from Sept. 21st-25th here in Montreal – the complete lineup and press release are below.

Pop Montreal is an international music festival here in Montreal which is celebrating its 10th anniversary from September 21st to the 25th, 2011. Pop is now recognized as an important multidisciplinary taste-making event, expanding its mission through various components: Puces Pop, Art Pop, Film Pop, Kids Pop and the Symposium. For the first time, we here at Sound On Sight will be present to cover Film Pop, a program branched out of a driving desire to create cinematic events within the same independent spirit as Pop Montreal. Film Pop became the first of our 5 segments. It is an annual celebration of the best in music related underground cinema and presents each year bold movies that are making waves in the scene. Through artistic cinematography, it gives the public rare opportunities to attend special viewings and seek to demonstrate the significant place music holds within our society, the world and in movies.

The East End Film Festival opens this evening with Roger Sargent's doc, The Libertines: There Are No Innocent Bystanders. The festival then kind of goes berserk on Sunday with Movie Mayday, "a free day of cinema, live music, cinema trails, virtual tours, filmmaking competitions, quizzes and talks blanketing the whole of London's East End," and a screening of Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) at the Barbican that Electric Sheep's pretty excited about. They also urge readers not to miss Friday's screening of Jerzy Kawalerowicz's Mother Joan of Angels (1961) "in the beautiful church of St John on Bethnal Green."
Update, 4/29: "As part of the East End Film Festival, legendary Portishead Adrian Utley was approached to select a film to screen and introduce; he chose the new digitally restored Taxi Driver — cleaned up by Martin Scorsese himself." Simon Jablonski: "The Quietus spoke to Adrian Utley to find out the details...

While some songs suggests they'd "like to teach the world to sing", the sad truth is that much of the world is tone deaf. We couldn't write hit songs if our lives depended on it. We may not be able to even hum "It's A Grand Old Flag" in key, let alone sing karaoke without humiliating ourselves. So instead of damaging the eardrums of those around us, we buy records and idolize musicians. However, save for autograph signings, impersonal if awesome videos, and concerts, there aren't that many opportunities to get up close and personal with our idols. Then every few years comes a great documentary that shows our favorite bands in a unique light and makes us want to go buy their entire discography. Again. Currently there are some great documentaries available that give a peek into the lives of the musicians we love. Here are three to watch:...

Documentary on indie-rock legends The Replacements set to premiere.
Color Me Obsessed, the first documentary about famed 80.s indie-rock band The Replacements, will have its World Premiere at the 5th annual Gasparilla International Film Festival in Tampa, Florida.Gorman Bechard, the film.s director, took top honors at last year.s Giff with his romantic-comedy Friends (With Benefits).
Told through the eyes of fans, friends, and contemporaries, Color Me Obsessed breaks from the traditional music documentary format of music and performances. Not looking to make a VH1/where-are-they-now style documentary Bechard took a unique approach, .I decided to present the band in a more iconic way,. he explains. .I thought, people believe in God without seeing or hearing him but rather through the passion, faith, and stories of others. After watching Color Me Obsessed, I.m pretty sure music fans will believe in The Replacements in much the same way.

So settle in as we kick things off with Gorman Bechard and Carmine Capobianco's hilariously-gory-romantic-splatterfest Psychos in Love from 1987. Up next we sink our claws into (and nearly expose ourselves to the potential risk of seziures) 2004's Cutie Honey. Finally, some people you may have heard of from other movies take part in the source of a lifelong nightmare of Parker's when we take a look at Invaders from Mars from 1986.

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...

I for one am very thankful that my days of being single are far, Far, behind me. Finding a mate is just a pain in the ass nowadays what with all the annoying bars and clubs, sexually transmitted diseases, and, oh yeah, the bloodthirsty psychopaths don't help much either.

Gorman Bechard's at work on a "psychosexual" horror film entitled One Night Stand . You can guess the various scenarios that will unravel based on the title alone... Here, a young woman goes home with a complete stranger only to discover that he likes to tape his conquests for a porno site. She turns the tables on him "brutalizing him and his friends" until she makes a decision as to whether he should live or die. So...a twist on the Hard Candy formula. Bechard has an official site established here where there is a Nsfw teaser trailer posted.

The 12th annual Boston Underground Film Festival isn’t set to start until March 25 — and will run until April 1 — but they’ve leaked a couple of early picks to Bad Lit. Even with just this little tease to start whetting New England underground film fans’ appetites, it looks like the venerable fest is in for another real doozy of a year.
The festival kicks off in high riotous fashion with the Opening Night feature Love Exposure (Ai no mukidashi), a four-hour Japanese whirlwind of sinful transgression by Sion Sono about a good Christian schoolboy who’s obsessed with taking pictures of girls’ panties — while they’re wearing them. Eventually, he meets the love of his young life, who doesn’t much like being his object of obsession.

1987’s Psychos In Love is a cheesefest so bloody and so funny that no horror fan should miss it. The American DVD debut of this 1987 feature (from Media Blasters on its Shriek Show label) is a must-buy for the movie alone, but the abundance of extras certainly provides the extra motivation one might need to fork over the bucks.
On one of the disc’s two commentary tracks, writer/director/producer/editor Gorman Bechard makes it a point to state that Gorman is in fact his real first name. One critic of Psychos In Love, he explains, was so disgusted by the film that he accused Bechard of changing his name to hide his embarrassment. Bechard, however, is not afraid to offend anyone’s sensibilities. As a result, he spins the unapologetic story of Joe (Carmine Capobianco, who also co-scripted), a grape-hating serial killer who just can’t find the right girl.
