One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new Blu-ray transfer of the film sometime this year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental will be hitting retailers in late 2024.
The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene. The plot description reads, “After air traffic controller Jack Chester loses a plane (it’s covered on his screen by a fly), he’s told to take a break. Jack books his family into a plush resort, but it turns out that their lodgings are in a hut by the beach, and that’s as good as the vacation gets.” Reiner would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

On Jan. 4, 1984, NBC unveiled Night Court, which went on to air for nine seasons and get a recent revival. The Hollywood Reporter weighed in with a full review, headlined “Night Court convicted of being consistently amusing TV sitcom,” as it entered its sophomore run:
Night Court is a consistently funny sitcom created by Reinhold Weege, a writer-producer for the old Barney Miller series. Its venue, weekly parade of various weirdos, and quirky regulars are reminiscent of Miller. And, like Miller, Night Court has more laughs per episode than most sitcoms.
Anchoring the series is Harry Anderson, as unorthodox Manhattan arraignment court judge, Harry Stone. Judge Stone is sharp and fair, but he seizes every available opportunity to turn due process of law into an excuse for levity. Anderson manages to wring just the right amount of irony out of lines like, “Being a judge means never having to say you’re sorry.

In the ’90s, NBC was the home of “Must See TV.” But before the heyday of Seinfeld, Friends, and Frasier, the network had a hit comedy in Night Court. The 1984 sitcom featured an ensemble cast of characters working the night shift at Manhattan Criminal Court. With the 2023 reboot now on NBC and Peacock, it’s the perfect time to look back at which original Night Court cast members are still alive.

Night Court followed various characters throughout its nine-season run. But throughout, Harry Anderson’s Judge Harold “Harry” T. Stone remained the anchor keeping the comedy on course. As the youngest serving judge, Harry is an idealist, amateur magician, and Mel Tormé enthusiast determined to make the most of his less-than-popular post in night court.

Exclusive: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Kapil Talwalkar has been tapped as a series regular in NBC’s half-hour pilot Night Court, a follow-up to the classic legal comedy series that’s headlined and executive produced by Melissa Rauch, with the original series’ John Larroquette reprising his Emmy-winning role.
Written/executive produced by Dan Rubin based on the original series created by Reinhold Weege, the multi-camera Night Court centers on unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone (Rauch), the daughter of the late Harry Stone, who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).
Talwalkar will play Neil. As the court’s clerk, it’s his job to keep things moving — a job that got a lot harder ever since a new idealist judge showed up.

Title: Sweet Talk Director: Terri Hanauer Starring: Natalie Zea, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Lindsay Hollister, Karen Austin, Time Winters, John Glover An art piece that, if it were made at a certain time in the 1980s and leaned a lot more prurient would definitely co-star Mickey Rourke, “Sweet Talk” is a talky two-hander about romance and sexual desire, as played out in a rangy series of conversations over a 12-hour period between a phone sex operator and one of her customers. Billed as “as true as you want it to be” in an opening credits title card, this well-intentioned actors’ showcase, a metaphor for finding north on one’s compass, works more [ Read More ]

Sears and Kmart have teamed up to offer their customers a movie download service called Alphaline Entertainment.
Customers will be able to rent movies for $3.99 and purchase them for $12.99. This service is not only has the same price point as CinemaNow from Best Buy, it also uses Sonic’s RoxioNow platform for content delivery. Alphaline Entertainment's service will only be available to customers in the U.S.
This service will be rolled out to customers using in multiple phases and will eventually be available from a variety of connected devices. For more information about the service visit alphaline.roxionow.com.
If I have to get a new TV in the near future for the bedroom or office I will likely get one of the internet connected Vizio tv's. I can see a service like this working wonderfully on a TV or other product.
Does this sound like a service you would use?...

When you want to stream a movie online, are Sears and K-Mart the names that come to mind? Probably not. But Sears (which owns K-Mart) has launched a movie download service called Alphaline Entertainmant [1], and hopes to become a competitor with other more established sites. The goal is to provide a full line of digital purchases and rentals and "embed the services at a chip level" to a growing slate of digital devices. More info after the break. A press release announces the service, which is available now. Prices aren't great, but they might be competitive, at least for rentals. The Town will cost $19.99 to purchase as a digital download, but only $3.99 to rent. But that's the same cost to rent as Amazon, and the digital purchase price is ten dollars more at Alphaline. It's amusing to see Restrepo featured prominently on the front page, however, since that is streaming on Netflix as I write.
