With Southern rock, in all its varieties, having a renaissance, one of the pioneers of the genre is heading back on the road. On Wednesday, the Marshall Tucker Band announced a spring tour with JJ Grey & Mofro, the swamp blues-rock band from Florida.

Netflix's Carry-On has been shockingly divisive in the days following its premiere, as most critics seemingly enjoyed the movie, while audiences have (ironically) been more critical of it. The action thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa officer working on Christmas Eve at Lax. When he pushes for a promotion (aka supervising a baggage-scanning lane), Ethan is unwillingly thrust into a terrorist plot. Jason Bateman plays the villain in Carry-On, who blackmails Ethan into letting a mysterious bag go through the scanner without raising any red flags.
After the release of Carry-On, rumblings about a potential sequel began spreading, and Taron Edgerton told Today that he would be on board for a second movie, as long as it has a "really innovative, creative idea."
As Carry-On continues, Ethan unravels more details about Bateman's character's plans and attempts to be the hero.

Lioness, the hit Paramount+ military drama from creator Taylor Sheridan, stars Zoe Saldaa as Joe, a CIA agent in charge of the eponymous Lioness program, which places undercover operators in a position adjacent to dangerous targets with the ultimate goal of eliminating some of America's most dangerous enemies. Season 1, set primarily in the Middle East, featured Laysla De Oliveira as the titular Lioness. For the show's sophomore outing, the setting shifts to the United States/Mexico border, with Joe's latest Lioness candidate (played by Genesis Rodriguez), who is forced to go rogue in order to infiltrate a powerful drug cartel run by her own estranged family.
Jill Wagner plays Bobby, one of the Qrf (Quick Response Force) Operators who serve as the Lioness "boots-on-the-ground" support. While fans of the wacky physical game show Wipeout might be familiar Wagner's name, since she co-hosted that ABC series alongside John Anderson and John Henson,...

There sure has been a lot of discourse this year about who can play country music. But at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s annual Medallion Ceremony on Sunday, officially inducting this year’s class, the answer was “anyone who showed up.”
That included two members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Keith Richards and Elvis Costello; Nashville’s latest pop arrival, Post Malone; bluegrass pioneer Del McCoury; Americana poet Lucinda Williams; and genre pillars Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris.
All of them, along with Eric Church, Blake Shelton,...

True to form, John Anderson was in the studio writing and recording a batch of new songs when he first heard rumblings about the latest class being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. When the Florida native, who possesses one of the genre’s most idiosyncratic drawls, eventually learned that he was one of the inductees, he says he absorbed the honor with a mix of satisfaction and melancholy.
“One of the main gratifications is I got to live to see it,” Anderson, 69, says. “Several of my friends were inducted posthumously.

Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced a species that was so powerful that it's no surprise they were never seen again. Star Trek has always been known to reach well outside the sci-fi genre and has frequently mixed genres such as action, romance, fantasy, and more. The willingness to break out of classic sci-fi tropes while still maintaining a core theme is what makes Star Trek TV shows so memorable and timeless. However, with so much material and so many TV shows and movies to work with, Star Trek has introduced some content that never quite stuck.
There have been plenty of missteps throughout the entire Star Trek timeline, and the reasons for narratives not being revisited are varied. Many times, these mishaps involve the introduction of species with vast amounts of unexplained power, and these apparent space gods usually mysteriously appear humanoid and end up troubling the Star Trek canon.

Evil was a standout TV show from the moment it premiered, and though season 4 is the series final outing, there's still plenty to love about the project. Combining elements of the supernatural with religious themes and character-driven storylines, Evil treads similar territory to some great fantasy TV series. This means that while Evil might not be returning to the screen with a new narrative arc, fans of the show can turn to other works that are just as captivating and compelling as Evil. These series incorporate magic, mystery, and crime to make for a unique blend of genres.
There are plenty of reasons Evil season 5 needs to happen, but though fans have saved TV shows from cancelation in the past, it seems unlikely that the supernatural drama will return. This isn't the first time that a strong TV show has been cut short before it could complete its planned arc,...

Netflix's new whodunnit limited series The Perfect Couple has divided both critics and audiences. Released on Netflix on September 5, 2024, The Perfect Couple has a great cast led by stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning. Created by Jenna Lamia, the 6-part series was directed entirely by Susanne Bier, best known for directing Bird Box, The Undoing, and The First Lady. The series has been compared to HBO's Big Little Lies due to Kidman's leading role in a murder mystery series based on a popular novel.
The Perfect Couple takes place in an idyllic coastal town on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. The trailer suggests that Kidman's character Greer Garrison Winbury and her husband Tag Winbury, played by Schreiber, are the type of people who are "kill-someone-and-get-away-with-it rich." This intriguing premise and ensemble cast was enough to launch The Perfect Couple to the number one...

“Pachinko,” the Apple TV+ drama that follows several generations in the lives of a Korean family during the 20th century, returned for its second season on August 23 to great acclaim. ESPN is making a few cuts to its football roster: NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and host Sam Ponder have been let go by the network, The Athletic reports. The cuts were reportedly “made for financial reasons.”
Griffin, a former NFL quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy in college, had been with ESPN since 2021, appearing on the NFL pregame show Monday Night Countdown and as an analyst during college football games as well. Earlier this year, though, ESPN hired former player Jason Kelce to take Griffin’s spot on the Monday Night Countdown crew.

Nearly twenty years have passed since the Guantanamo Bay detention camp first opened, thrusting this remote corner of Cuba into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Consigned to a legal gray zone by the US government, Gitmo became synonymous with indefinite detention and interrogation practices, which some have called a violation of basic human rights. It’s a sad legacy that still casts a shadow today, with the prison holding a small number of men despite promises by President Obama to close it. Into this controversy comes “I Am Gitmo,” shedding new light on the human costs of those clandestine policies through the story of one innocent man.

Cyberpunk 2077's Night City is full of media references, including several to Keanu Reeves character and other roles. Keanu's character, Johnny Silverhand plays a major role in Cyberpunk 2077's narrative. Reeves' existence as an actor in-universe adds meta layers to the game. The inclusion of the Matrix-esque John Anderson and ORPH3U5, a John Wick Easter egg, and Keanu Reeves' in-game existence add complexity and meta fun to Cyberpunk 2077.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Survivors", the U.S.S. Enterprise discovered a mystery. On the planet Delta Rana IV — otherwise uninhabited and whose surface was devastated by an ancient cataclysm — a single house sat. Beaming down, the Enterprise crew found a well-kemp lawn, a large white home, and a kindly elderly couple named Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge (John Anderson and Anne Haney). While polite and welcoming, the Uxbridges are cagey about their circumstances. How are they the only people alive on the whole planet, and how can they merely enjoy teatime and lawn mowing without acknowledging their utter isolation?
Eventually, of course, the truth would come out. Kevin Uxbridge was, in fact, a member of a species called the Douwd, a species of pure energy, possessed of godlike powers. He transformed into a humanoid and fell in love with Rishon, living with her in connubial bliss for years.

An airplane, Flight 33, is en route from London to New York City on what seems to be an uneventful trip. Captain Farver (John Anderson) notices that the aircraft is increasingly gaining ground speed, but it poses no real danger to the plane or the crew. After a brief flash of light and turbulence, Farver descends lower to scope out the scenery beneath. He's met with a most shocking sight: droves of dinosaurs roam the terrain, cementing the fact that Flight 33 has somehow traveled through time to the prehistoric era. This is the crux of the 54th episode of "The Twilight Zone," "The Odyssey of Flight 33."
How did the idea for such an intriguing episode concept come about? Series creator Rod Serling was struck with the inspiration for "The Odyssey of Flight 33" while his brother, aviation writer Robert Serling, had come to visit him. In The Twilight Zone Companion by Marc Scott Zicree,...

Cree-Canadian NHL defenceman Ethan Bear wants to see some changes in the league when it comes to dealing with racism.
Bear — who most recently played for the Vancouver Canucks — previously spoke out to condemn racism in 2021 after dealing with racist comments himself while on the Edmonton Oilers after the team was swept from the playoffs.
The athlete spoke to Et Canada’s Carlos Bustamante as part of our special for National Truth and Reconciliation Day, sharing, “That was still to this day one of the hardest things I had to do… I just feel like if I think about myself back then, like, I wouldn’t want to do something like that alone.
“I’ve dealt with it in the past and stuff. But, you know, when you’re on the biggest stage and all eyes are on you and you have social media these days, people are putting everything everywhere.

Tom Cruise and his brand of performing over-the-top stunts go beyond the Mission: Impossible franchise. He has already climbed a mountain, faced a knife to his eye at a fatally close distance, held his breath underwater for six minutes, and rode off a cliff for the Mission: Impossible movies but even beyond his antics as Imf Agent Ethan Hunt, the action star has had a notorious history of performing thrillingly dangerous stunts. While he had been involved in such theatrics since the '80s and '90s, his “need for speed” only seems to have increased with age - just take into consideration how much Tom Cruise runs in every Mission: Impossible movie.
From Days of Thunder to The Last Samurai to the Top Gun movies, Cruise has a tendency to embark on adrenaline-pumping stunts, often with no stunt double. While some of these high-stakes challenges are executed without much trouble,...

There are some film characters that are so impossibly quirky, you cannot believe even a scaled-back version of them exists in real life. Many of these people reside in the twisted universe of Joel and Ethan Coen, and the majority of these oddballs can be found in their 1998 soft-boiled stoner mystery "The Big Lebowski." It's a sordid tale featuring marmot-brandishing nihilist thugs, a pederast ex-con bowling fanatic, and a criminal porn kingpin. But the film's most bizarro creation is its protagonist, who finds himself inexplicably at odds with these crackpot forces of evil. His name is Jeff Lebowski, but you can call him The Dude.
As brought to exquisitely wackadoodle life by Jeff Bridges, The Dude is a man who takes life as it slowly comes to him. He grocery shops in his robe, bowls with his buddies (belligerent Vietnam Vet Walter Sobchak and human doormat Donny Kerabatsos), and subsists...

Less than one month after he was charged, Alec Baldwin has managed to slash five years off of his possible sentence and is awaiting a ruling on a motion to disqualify the special prosecutor appointed to the case over his role in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of Rust.
With momentum on his side, Baldwin will likely take his case to a jury instead of accepting a plea deal if he’s offered one, according to several legal experts consulted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Mary Carmack-Altwies, the district attorney who serves Santa Fe County, filed an amended complaint on Monday downgrading involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The move, which significantly reduced their possible prison time, came after lawyers for the actor and producer of the low-budget Western argued that their client was unconstitutionally charged with violating a recently-amended firearm enhancement statute that...

John Sturges’ Road Show comedy western has more in common with 1941 than The Magnificent Seven, but Kino has MGM’s new remaster and the visual result is spectacular. The Ultra Panavision 70 epic is still a favorite of fans of out-of-control Hollywood filmmaking. Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, Jim Hutton, Pamela Tiffin and a huge cast lead the charge for a convoy of frontier whisky. It’s all in a fine spirit of madcap fun. . . so where are the big laughs?

Angel Olsen showed an affinity for working with classic country sounds on her latest album Big Time, which came out in June. On Tuesday, Olsen released an updated version of the title track, which features country maverick Sturgill Simpson.
A lilting countrypolitan waltz about the rush of falling hard for someone, “Big Time” is recast as a duet here between Olsen and Simpson. “Good morning kisses, giving you all mine,” Olsen begins in the opening verse, as with the original, but the second verse sounds like an answer as Simpson takes over.

The BBC plans to bring back one of Britain’s biggest shows of the 1990s, with the broadcaster reported to be in talks with rights holders MGM Studios to relaunch the very physical game-show Gladiators.
Broadcast Magazine had the scoop that, three decades after professionals with unlikely but catchy names like Blaze, Falcon and Wolf took on contestants in a series of muscle-flexing challenges, the BBC hopes to bring the show back by next year, say insiders, who report that a set of new professionals has been selected and filming will take place in Sheffield, northern England.
The BBC is currently keeping quiet on its plans for the show, but Broadcast Magazine cited a source who told them, “It’s exactly the kind of Saturday night family entertainment show that BBC One needs.”

Having paid my 8.50 to see Top Gun: Maverick last weekend, my local cineplex inadvertently improved my appreciation of the film. For three minutes the sound clicked off and, minus dialogue, I was instantly caught up in the soaring jets, hyper-caffeinated cast and the durable charisma of its star. Then sound returned, the story unfolded and reality set in: This is not really a plot but a superbly crafted business plan, half video game and half military recruitment film. It’s the perfect structure for a Tom Cruise genre-bashing blockbuster.
Historians may ultimately cite the movie as a turning point — the film that reignited audiences, young and old, to pay homage to their movie palaces. FiIm critics may also single out the Top Gun sequel as a defiant reinvention of the classic war genre.

One of the best yet least seen of John Sturges’ westerns couples a fine screenplay with strong star perfs and superb direction: the straightforward story builds tension throughout. Kirk Douglas is a sheriff out for both justice and revenge and Anthony Quinn is the he-bull rancher who stands in his way: the guilty party is Quinn’s son. It looks sensational in VistaVision, with a fine music score by Dimitri Tiomkin — it’s a pleasure all the way through, with strong support from Carolyn (swoon) Jones, Earl Holliman, Brian Hutton and Brad Dexter.

A year and a half after its huzzah-filled first season, Hulu’s history-spoofing, Russian royalty satire “The Great” has returned for its sophomore run. Elle Fanning stars at the title’s Catherine the Great, who at the end of the first season has initiated a coup against her misogynistic and vulgar husband Peter, played by Nicholas Hoult. Her success is complicated by her pregnancy with their child, though, and the second season finds them navigating their new power imbalance. All 10 episodes of the second season of “The Great” began streaming on Nov. 19.
After earning a pair of Emmy nominations for its first season, including one for series creator and writer Tony McNamara, “The Great” returns to, well, great reviews from critics. It currently has a Metacritic score of 84, which indicates “universal acclaim.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “The Great” season 2 reviews are raves and it merits a 100% fresh score.

In rock, supergroup status is relative. Nineties-era Kansas City trio the Farewell Bend didn’t exactly boast the starry pedigree of a Traveling Wilburys, or even a Minuteflag. But for fans of the members’ prior projects — Boys Life and Giants Chair, two like-minded Kc outfits that each found unique ways of combining post-hardcore crunch with heartfelt vulnerability — their first and only LP, 1998’s In Passing, represented a welcome opportunity to hear how a “What if …?” inter-band collaboration might play out.
