Netflix's Carry-On has been shockingly divisive in the days following its premiere, as most critics seemingly enjoyed the movie, while audiences have (ironically) been more critical of it. The action thriller, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a Tsa officer working on Christmas Eve at Lax. When he pushes for a promotion (aka supervising a baggage-scanning lane), Ethan is unwillingly thrust into a terrorist plot. Jason Bateman plays the villain in Carry-On, who blackmails Ethan into letting a mysterious bag go through the scanner without raising any red flags.

After the release of Carry-On, rumblings about a potential sequel began spreading, and Taron Edgerton told Today that he would be on board for a second movie, as long as it has a "really innovative, creative idea."

As Carry-On continues, Ethan unravels more details about Bateman's character's plans and attempts to be the hero.

Lioness, the hit Paramount+ military drama from creator Taylor Sheridan, stars Zoe Saldaa as Joe, a CIA agent in charge of the eponymous Lioness program, which places undercover operators in a position adjacent to dangerous targets with the ultimate goal of eliminating some of America's most dangerous enemies. Season 1, set primarily in the Middle East, featured Laysla De Oliveira as the titular Lioness. Released on Netflix on September 5, 2024, The Perfect Couple has a great cast led by stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning. Created by Jenna Lamia, the 6-part series was directed entirely by Susanne Bier, best known for directing Bird Box, The Undoing, and The First Lady. The series has been compared to HBO's Big Little Lies due to Kidman's leading role in a murder mystery series based on a popular novel.

The Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed for Kaos. Kaos is a just-released Netflix comedy series that plays off Greek mythology in a modern-day, contemporary reimagining. The series features Jeff Goldblum in the lead role of Zeus, along with Janet McTeer as Hera, Stephan Dillane as Prometheus, Aurora Perrineau as Riddy, Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Misia Butler as Caeneus, Susan Wooldridge as Pious Agatha, David Thewlis as Hades, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, and Leila Farzad as Ari.

Now, the Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed for Kaos. At the time of writing, Kaos holds a fresh score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes among the 24 critics who have reviewed it. The Popcornmeter (audience score) has under 50 reviews in, but so far sits at a 75%. This score is subject to change, for the show just released yesterday, August 29, meaning that far more reviews could be released in the coming days.

“Pachinko,” the Apple TV+ drama that follows several generations in the lives of a Korean family during the 20th century, returned for its second season on August 23 to great acclaim. The series won our Gold Derby TV Award for Best Drama Series when it was last on the air more than two years ago. And the extended hiatus doesn’t seem to have diminished the program, if the reviews are any indication.

ESPN is making a few cuts to its football roster: NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and host Sam Ponder have been let go by the network, The Athletic reports. The cuts were reportedly “made for financial reasons.”

Griffin, a former NFL quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy in college, had been with ESPN since 2021, appearing on the NFL pregame show Monday Night Countdown and as an analyst during college football games as well. Earlier this year, though, ESPN hired former player Jason Kelce to take Griffin’s spot on the Monday Night Countdown crew.

Anderson announced his decision on his podcast, Inside Wisconsin, which he co-hosts with Trevor Thomas.

“My contract runs out at ESPN at the end of June and I have decided that will be the end. I’m going to leave the company. I’m going to, sort of, retire from SportsCenter. I’m going to get to do a few track & field things, I’m going to continue to do the Boston Marathon, and the New York Marathon which I love, and some NCAA track meets, and some SEC stuff, and I’m, like, incredible excited about that”, Anderson said.

Anderson’s been with ESPN since 1999 and has been on ESPN’s late-night programming for the last two decades.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Survivors", the U.S.S. Enterprise discovered a mystery. Five Empire Cinemas sites around England have been sold to Irish company Omniplex Cinemas: more on the acquisition here.

As we suggested over the weekend, a deal has now been completed for five of the Empire Cinemas sites in the UK. The Empire Cinemas group went into receivership over the summer, with the immediate closure of several of its cinemas. Five of those that continued trading have now got new homes.

It’s the Omniplex Cinema Group, the largest cinema operator in Ireland, which is splashing out £22.5m over an 18 month period to acquire and then refit the cinemas concerned.

The five sites that have been saved are confirmed as Birmingham Great Park, Ipswich, Sutton, Clydebank and High Wycombe. They all become part of the Omniplex group this month, which has plans for further expansion into England across 2024.

There are some film characters that are so impossibly quirky, you cannot believe even a scaled-back version of them exists in real life. Many of these people reside in the twisted universe of Joel and Ethan Coen, and the majority of these oddballs can be found in their 1998 soft-boiled stoner mystery "The Big Lebowski." Less than one month after he was charged, Alec Baldwin has managed to slash five years off of his possible sentence and is awaiting a ruling on a motion to disqualify the special prosecutor appointed to the case over his role in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of Rust.

Angel Olsen showed an affinity for working with classic country sounds on her latest album Big Time, which came out in June. On Tuesday, Olsen released an updated version of the title track, which features country maverick Sturgill Simpson.

A lilting countrypolitan waltz about the rush of falling hard for someone, “Big Time” is recast as a duet here between Olsen and Simpson. “Good morning kisses, giving you all mine,” Olsen begins in the opening verse, as with the original, but the second verse sounds like an answer as Simpson takes over.

The BBC plans to bring back one of Britain’s biggest shows of the 1990s, with the broadcaster reported to be in talks with rights holders MGM Studios to relaunch the very physical game-show Gladiators.

Broadcast Magazine had the scoop that, three decades after professionals with unlikely but catchy names like Blaze, Falcon and Wolf took on contestants in a series of muscle-flexing challenges, the BBC hopes to bring the show back by next year, say insiders, who report that a set of new professionals has been selected and filming will take place in Sheffield, northern England.

The BBC is currently keeping quiet on its plans for the show, but Broadcast Magazine cited a source who told them, “It’s exactly the kind of Saturday night family entertainment show that BBC One needs.”

Having paid my 8.50 to see Top Gun: Maverick last weekend, my local cineplex inadvertently improved my appreciation of the film. For three minutes the sound clicked off and, minus dialogue, I was instantly caught up in the soaring jets, hyper-caffeinated cast and the durable charisma of its star. Then sound returned, the story unfolded and reality set in: This is not really a plot but a superbly crafted business plan, half video game and half military recruitment film. It’s the perfect structure for a Tom Cruise genre-bashing blockbuster.

Historians may ultimately cite the movie as a turning point — the film that reignited audiences, young and old, to pay homage to their movie palaces. FiIm critics may also single out the Top Gun sequel as a defiant reinvention of the classic war genre.

Does it measure up to the classics? Sure it does, but only Cruise would set out to...

One of the best yet least seen of John Sturges’ westerns couples a fine screenplay with strong star perfs and superb direction: the straightforward story builds tension throughout. Kirk Douglas is a sheriff out for both justice and revenge and Anthony Quinn is the he-bull rancher who stands in his way: the guilty party is Quinn’s son. It looks sensational in VistaVision, with a fine music score by Dimitri Tiomkin — it’s a pleasure all the way through, with strong support from Carolyn (swoon) Jones, Earl Holliman, Brian Hutton and Brad Dexter.

A year and a half after its huzzah-filled first season, Hulu’s history-spoofing, Russian royalty satire “The Great” has returned for its sophomore run. Elle Fanning stars at the title’s Catherine the Great, who at the end of the first season has initiated a coup against her misogynistic and vulgar husband Peter, played by Nicholas Hoult. Her success is complicated by her pregnancy with their child, though, and the second season finds them navigating their new power imbalance. All 10 episodes of the second season of “The Great” began streaming on Nov. 19.

After earning a pair of Emmy nominations for its first season, including one for series creator and writer Tony McNamara, “The Great” returns to, well, great reviews from critics. It currently has a Metacritic score of 84, which indicates “universal acclaim.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “The Great” season 2 reviews are raves and it merits a 100% fresh score.
