At this year’s Tony Awards “Suffs” managed to win prizes for Best Musical Book and Best Score, both of which went to Shaina Taub. Historically, winning those two accolades in particular would bode well for a show’s chances at Best Musical. Yet in a shocking turn of events, the top award went to “The Outsiders.” But this is not the first time something like this has happened.
SEETony Awards: Every winner (and nominee) in all 26 competitive categories
In 1978 “On the Twentieth Century” won Tonys for Best Score and Best Book (Comden and Green). It also won Best Actor in a Musical (John Cullum), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Kevin Kline), and Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner). Yet Best Musical that year went to Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr.‘s revue “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” A tribute to the music of Fats Waller, it also won Tonys for Best...

Viola Davis received her first ever Grammy nomination on Tuesday morning for narration of her audio book “Finding Me.” Since she has already won at the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, the actress could become the 18th person to become an Egot champion if she wins at the Grammys in a few weeks. And it might be a bonanza of awards success coming soon as Davis has a strong film contender for Oscars and other events with “The Woman King.”
The previous champions of Egot are (in chronological order of achievement): composer Richard Rodgers, actress Helen Hayes, actress Rita Moreno, actor John Gielgud, actress Audrey Hepburn, composer Marvin Hamlisch, orchestrator Jonathan Tunick, writer/director/composer Mel Brooks, director Mike Nichols, actress Whoopi Goldberg, producer Scott Rudin, composer Robert Lopez, singer and actor John Legend, composer Tim Rice, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer Alan Menken and actress/singer Jennifer Hudson.

All Dogs Go to Heaven is one of the classic also-rans of the quote-unquote "golden age of animation." While its theatrical release was pre-empted by an unassuming Disney flick called The Little Mermaid, the film found a second life on home video, eventually becoming one of MGM/United Artists' highest-selling video titles. The film turned 25 on Nov. 17, and in celebration, we're taking a closer look at its production and legacy. 1. All Dogs Go to Heaven was produced by Don Bluth, who also made The Land Before Time, An American Tail and The Secret of Nimh.Bluth enjoys a kind...

We've got magic to do, just for you sing the weird and slightly worrisome band of players in the uniquely compelling 1970s classic Pippin, by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. While the creation of the original Broadway production in 1972 was plagued with problems - none the least of which being the composerlyricist, Schwartz, and the show's choreographerdirector, Bob Fosse, failing to see eye to eye on virtually anything, resulting in Schwartz's barring from rehearsals and much of his input denied - it went on to become a Tony Award-winning mega-hit, running for nearly 2000 performances before it closed in 1977. The score even had a few crossover poprock bids thanks to the Jackson 5 and The Supremes utilizing the sounds of Schartz's contemporary and radio-friendly score, with a cast album on the Motown record label, no less and some funky new arrangements and orchestrations augmenting the sterling Ralph Burns originals, as a result.
