The Town That Dreaded Sundown has a hard time fitting in with other slasher remakes, essentially because it’s not really a remake to begin with. At least not in the traditional sense. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa instead went beyond the expectations of most horror remakes. In lieu of mere reconstructions and callbacks, they offered a multifaceted story that acknowledges the 1976 film and its real-life basis. The end result is a movie within a movie that escapes simple classification. However, regardless of what this film is labeled as, The Town That Dreaded Sundown remains one of the most experimental slashers from this century.

Apple TV+ released a new trailer for its drama “Fancy Dance” starring Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson.

The film follows Jax (Gladstone), who has cared for her niece Rokie (Deroy-Olson) since her sister’s disappearance by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. When she risks losing custody of Roki, the two hit the road and scour backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow.

“Fancy Dance,” a Confluential Films and Significant Productions/Aum Group production, is produced by Deidre Backs, Erica Tremblay, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi and Tommy Oliver. Bird Runningwater, Lily Gladstone, Forest Whitaker and Charlotte Koh serve as executive producers.

Universal Content Productions is teaming up with the beloved Dodgers pitcher-turned-broadcaster for a scripted limited series based on his life and career. A network/platform is not yet attached.

The project, which is in development, hails from writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, the writing duo whose credits include the upcoming Netflix limited series Painkiller and who are adapting Disney’s Bambi remake. Major League Baseball’s Nick Trotta (The Captain, 30 for 30) also attached to exec produce via MLB Studios.

Additionally, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Blue Beetle”) is writing the script, which is in early development.

“El Muerto” is the first Latino character to lead a Marvel film, and the antihero character is also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, the son of a luchador who finds himself next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto,” which is the powers and a mask worn by a super-powered wrestler.

The character appeared in a Spider-Man comic in which the luchador wrestler attended a charity event organized by J. Jonah Jameson in which he hoped that El Muerto would defeat Spider-Man and unmask him in the ring.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the director of “Me And Earl and the Dying Girl,” will next direct a filmed adaptation of “The Fortress of Solitude,” the acclaimed, best-selling novel by Jonathan Lethem, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

“The Fortress of Solitude” is set at Amazon Studios and will be adapted by playwright Dave Harris for the screen. Gomez-Rejon will also produce.

The film is based on Lethem’s semi-autobiographical novel from 2003 about two teenagers in 1970s Brooklyn, one white and one Black, who discover a magic ring with the directive to fight against evil. The book grapples with racial politics of the time, gentrification and music culture.

Exclusive: Tommy Martinez (Good Trouble), Emily Rudd (Fear Street) and Udo Kier (The Painted Bird) are set for recurring roles in Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s conspiracy thriller drama series Hunters, created by David Weil and executive produced by Jordan Peele.

The plot for Season 2 is being kept under wraps as are Martinez, Rudd and Kier’s characters. The first season of Hunters followed a diverse band of Nazi hunters living in 1977 New York City. The Hunters, as they’re known, have discovered that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living among us and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the United States.

Season 2 of Hunters, produced by Amazon Studios, Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Sonar Entertainment, is executive produced by Weil who serves as showrunner, Peele and Win Rosenfeld from Monkeypaw Productions, Phil Abraham, David Rosen, Jerry Kupfer and Alfonso Gomez-Rejon as well as David Ellender and Matt Loze from Sonar.

The American Film Institute (AFI), in partnership with Anthony and Joe Russo’s studio Agbo, has named Christina Kelly Holmes as this year’s recipient of the Agbo/AFI Conservatory Development Grant.

Now in its third year, the program awards $25K to a recent AFI Conservatory graduate to develop at least one project with a year-long mentorship from Agbo.

Holmes received the grant for her project For Women Only, a one-hour drama set in 1980s communist Romania about a blacklisted classically trained pianist who becomes a black-market entrepreneur smuggling goods for women into one of the most oppressive regimes in modern history.

Hulu has given a formal pilot order to Olga Dies Dreaming, a one-hour drama based on the forthcoming novel by Xochitl Gonzalez, from Gonzalez, Emmy-nominated and Sundance-winning filmmaker Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and 20th Television. In anticipation of the official green light, the pilot already has been casting.

Written by Gonzalez and to be directed by Gomez-Rejon, Olga Dies Dreaming is the story of a Nuyorican brother and sister from a gentrifying Sunset Park, Brooklyn, reckoning with the absent, politically radical mother and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

Gomez-Rejon partnered with Gonzalez after reading her novel in manuscript form. Together, they developed the series from the ground up and will executive produce the pilot. 20th Television is the studio.

Exclusive: CAA has inked playwright and screenwriter Michael Mitnick.

Mitnick most recently wrote the Alfonso Gomez-Rejon feature The Current War about the electricity war between titans Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse which starred Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Tom Holland, and Nicholas Hoult. The pic made its world premiere at TIFF in 2017.

Mitnick’s current projects include Lily and the Octopus at Amazon, the limited series Siegfried & Roy for Peter Chernin, and The Light of Days for Amblin Partners.

He is also adapting the anthology series Dial M for Murder for Alicia Vikander at MGM, with Terence Winter and Andrew Mittman executive producing. Mitnick previously adapted YA novel, The Giver, which Phillip Noyce directed for the screen.

One of EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s most closely watched sections in a world where streaming shows rule the roost is the First Look TV Pilots Competition and this year’s winner, the Amazon Original “Hunters,” kept veteran cinematographer Frederick Elmes on his toes, he says.

Elmes, with more than 60 director of photography credits spanning five decades, brought to the job a wealth of expertise, ranging from his early days capturing the haunting monochrome shadows of “Eraserhead” to Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” via “Blue Velvet” – a film that shares some of the hyper-reality qualities of “Hunters.”

The 90-minute opening episode of the show, “In the Belly of the Whale,” sets up eight characters who form a crack team of Nazi hunters in 1970s-era New York – led in the chase by a wise-cracking Al Pacino. It kept Elmes busy capturing distinctive performances, he says.

Elmes explained that the story – following a diverse band of Nazi hunters in New York in 1977, who discover that war criminals are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich – was actually based in reality.

“The stories were told to [the “Hunters” showrunner] David Weil by his grandmother, who [was a Holocaust survivor] and has experienced much of the turmoil of that era. It’s not based on any factual document, but it is researched by him and he was very concerned that his grandmother’s story should be told. Indie ethos, costume drama and rich fantasy won the day at the world’s top cinematography event, EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, on Saturday, with Joshua James Richards’ naturalistic filming in Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” taking the Golden Frog plus Fipresci jury honors. The chronicle of life on the rough edges of America’s society among retirees living on the road in trailers, based on Jessica Bruder’s nonfiction book “Nomadland: Surviving in the Twenty-First Century,” is considered a strong Oscars contender.

The 28th edition of Camerimage also wrapped with its award to an actor of unique visual sensitivity for Johnny Depp, whose Japan-set war correspondent story “Minamata,” filmed by Benoit Delhomme, screened at the fest. The completely online program, which will admit its first students in September, is comprised of modules covering the creative process, mechanics of crafts, business concepts, and criticism. The curriculum has been designed to help aspiring directors, producers, writers, and executives better understand their own inclinations and career paths. The organizers hope that Yellowbrick’s track record of attracting learners from diverse backgrounds will help draw talent that may not have otherwise found routes into the industry.

The second year program awards $25,000 to a recent AFI Conservatory graduate to develop at least one project with a year-long mentorship from Agbo. Matriculating in screenwriting in the AFI Class of 2019, Kato will receive the grant for her script Dia de las Carpas, a fairy tale about a little girl who escapes deportation by becoming a mermaid.

“Marina spotlights injustice and inequality through a remarkable lens that brings both beauty and joy to her examinations of the struggles immigrants face,” said Angela Russo-Otstot, President of Creative at Agbo. “We are honored to guide her through our story process to help develop her short Dia de las Carpas into a feature-length screenplay that champions underdog heroes in the Latinx community through a commercial approach that speaks to broad audiences.

Amazon Studios announced today it has ordered a second season of the Amazon Original series Hunters.

The hit conspiracy thriller was created by David Weil and executive produced by Jordan Peele, and streams exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

The first season of Hunters, starring Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, and Jerrika Hinton, bowed globally February 21.
