A mystery thriller touted as “the first commercial Qatari feature film,” a fantasy epic “showcasing the power of unity,” and a documentary about Anne Lorimor as she goes to Mount Kilimanjaro to reclaim her title as the oldest person to summit it are all part of a new film slate unveiled on Saturday by Doha, Qatar-based pan-Arab content studio Katara Studios in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The lineup of projects, unveiled at a showcase event during the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in the second-largest Saudi city on Saturday, also includes Sakhr, a biopic about technology trailblazer Mohammed Al-Sharekh and “his pivotal role in pioneering Arabic computing in the 1980s,” as exclusively unveiled by THR earlier.

Four years ago, we heard that Luca Bercovici, who wrote and directed the 1984 creature feature Ghoulies, and his co-writer Jefery Levy were trying to get Ghoulies franchise rights holder Sony Pictures to let them reboot the franchise. Earlier this year, a press release revealed that Bercovici and Levy have officially reclaimed the domestic rights to Ghoulies and have big plans for the franchise, including making a new trilogy of films. Now, actor Michael Des Barres – who played the villainous cult leader Malcolm Graves in the original film – has made a post on social media that indicates he might be returning for the reboot!
Sharing an image of his Ghoulies character, Des Barres wrote, “I had green contacts on my eyes which virtually blinded me! And the horns seem to keep on growing as the weeks went by.. there’s no business like sure business!!! Guess what? I think they want me to do it again.

The Ghoulies franchise has been dormant for thirty years, but it might be coming back in a major way. A couple months ago, Ghoulies director Luca Bercovici, who also wrote the screenplay for the 1984 creature feature with Jefery Levy, announced that he and Levy have reclaimed the domestic rights to Ghoulies and have big plans for the franchise, including making a new trilogy of films, publishing a book series, and launching an exclusive line of figures, apparel, and collectibles. While we wait to see these new films and books, Toynk has unveiled a trio of 14-inch Ghoulies plush toys that will allow fans to take home plush versions of the Fish Ghoulie, Cat Ghoulie, and Rat Ghoulie!
The original Ghoulies had the following synopsis: As a child, Jonathan was almost killed by his father, Malcolm, during a satanic ritual. After being saved and raised by Wolfgang, who has kept him unaware of his background,...

Horror sure does come in all shapes and sizes. Let it be known that size always matters to some. But most importantly, the smaller they are the dastardlier and more vicious they become. Ah yes, we’re at that time of month again… what is with this starting off with sexual and body anatomy innuendos?! Goddamn it, ok, we’re back with another Horror Movie Rip-off which brings about two pint-sized demonoids covered in fur. These things possess not just some gnarly looking features to them but can be misconstrued and mistaken for the other. As I’m writing this, I’m starting to get some brain fog of who’s who, but in the end they’re both unique and seem like they’re both concocted out of Hp Lovecraft’s twisted, and nightmarish tales. It’s a shame this wasn’t a three-way (Goddamn it I did it again!

Empire Pictures’ lovable cult classic creature feature Ghoulies went on to spawn a four-movie franchise that ended with 1994’s Ghoulies IV. That means we haven’t seen or heard from the franchise in almost 30 years, but the original creators are now determined to bring the tiny rubber monsters back to life – and it seems they’ve reclaimed the rights to be able to do it.
Director/Co-Writer Luca Bercovici and Producer/Co-Writer Jefery Levy have reclaimed the domestic rights to their 1984 cult classic film, a press release has informed us.
The plan? They want to “develop a new film trilogy for a new generation”!
We’ve been told that two of the scripts are already complete, with the third one halfway complete at the time of this article being published. “We are shopping it now and hoping to film in late Summer/Early Fall,” writer/producer Theo Lemasters tells Bloody Disgusting.

Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

Last year, Umbrella Entertainment gave the 1985 creature feature Ghoulies (watch it Here) a Blu-ray release in Australia that contained three different cults of the movie, and also packaged it with its first sequel. Now Mvd Rewind Collection has announced that they’re giving Ghoulies a special edition release as well – and this one is going to be Blu-ray and 4K Uhd! The street date is September 12.
Directed by Luca Bercovici from a script he wrote with Jefery Levy, the first Ghoulies has the following synopsis: As a child, Jonathan (Peter Liapis) was almost killed by his father, Malcolm (Michael Des Barres), during a satanic ritual. After being saved and raised by Wolfgang (Jack Nance), who has kept him unaware of his background, Jonathan inherits Malcolm’s house and moves in with girlfriend Rebecca (Lisa Pelikan). Through his explorations of the house, he begins unlocking the secrets and latent powers contained within his new found home.

Seems to me that only in a very good year for movies could the best film I saw all year and the worst film I saw all year both be called Parasite. Of course, one was the Cannes sensation and sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated South Korean film from Bong Joon Ho. The other was the 1982 3-D “classic” from director Charles Band, starring Demi Moore and Luca Bercovici, a movie which, once I finally caught up with it, or rather once it finally caught up with me (after my having successfully avoided it for almost 40 years), certainly made for an agonizing waste of my time, so I can only imagine what the actors and craftspeople who were involved with making it must have felt, and likely still do. And I consider it a real hallmark of a quality cinema annum when I can say that I saw more movies by near-forgotten Hollywood journeymen Ray Enright...

Demi Moore very quickly revealed the “worst movie” she’s ever been in Wednesday on James Corden’s “Late Late Show.” Anything to avoid eating a 1,000-year-old egg, we suppose.
“Actually that one is very easy,” she told the CBS late-night personality during a game of his “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” game. “It’s ‘Parasite’ in 3-D.”
Rotten Tomatoes would agree. “Parasite,” Moore’s second-ever movie, has an 11% critics’ rating there. The audience has the 1982 film at 13%.

Interestingly enough, “Parasite” is not Moore’s lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Her “Wild Oats” from 2016 has a perfectly horrible 0% score. To be fair to Moore and the movie, that one only counts five critical reviews, and the audience has it at 35%.

Nope, this isn’t the new Bong Joon-ho movie, but a 3-D oldie from 1982. Although it’s by no means a great picture, fans equipped for Blu-ray 3-D will want to take a look — the depth effects fashioned with the over’n’under Sterevision system are some of the best yet. Stan Winston provides director Charles Band with the ‘Alien’ rip-off title critters, and added interest is provided via an early appearance by Demi Moore, who sleepwalks through her part but certainly looks good. A full complement of extras tell the making-of story; the feature is also encoded in 2-D, for really imaginative viewers.

It’s Alien crossed with Mad Max, and Demi Moore plays a lemon farmer. We look back at the 1982 sci-fi horror, Parasite...

“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

Ghoulies
Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay, Scott Thomson, Ralph Seymour | Written by Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy | Directed by Luca Bercovici
Ghoulies 2
Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing, Kerry Remsen, Donnie Jeffcoat, Dale Wyatt | Written by Charlie Dolan, Dennis Paoli, Luca Bercovici | Directed by Albert Band
For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone.

How do they do this? Hold a memorial? Have a Radzoff horror marathon? Nope, they decide to steal his freshly buried body and give hime the ultimate farewell house party back in their mansion! Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.
Instead, the 1984 film focuses mainly on a man (Peter Liapis) who inherits a mansion from his father (rocker Richard Des Barres) and ends up conjuring...

While Universal is going through their treasure troves and sharing rare items with the public in celebration of their 100th anniversary, Full Moon is doing the same. Sort of. The direct-to-video giant is apparently switching offices, and in the process they have come across a few collectible goodies of their own.
Item one for your consideration: a Ghoulies hand puppet! For those (sadly) not familiar, Ghoulies, released in 1985, was Luca Bercovici’s first film as director (followed by Rockula in 1990), and what a debut it was. Telling the story of a man moving into a sprawling mansion, where he is overcome with the obsession to have ancient demon creatures do his glowing-eyed bidding.
Quite frankly, Ghoulies II, released in 1988, is a superior movie to the original (love the carnival setting and colorful characters), but the first film in the series (that would see a third and fourth sequel before calling...

Stag Night is a low budget venture from first time director Peter A. Dowling (Flightplan) and this film, described as "story-wise the film is a cliche ridden tale that offers up no suprises" (Blogomatic), will be released on DVD February 15th. This film had some troubles finding distribution before settling with Ghost House Underground (Dance of the Dead), as Stag Night was completed in 2008. However, sometimes indies take their time to find an audience and Blogomatic3000 has also equated this film with "an enjoyable time." All aboard the Stag Night trailer below and check out the recognizable cast, which includes Breckin Meyer (Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare), Kip Pardue (Hostel III), and Vinessa Shaw from The Hills Have Eyes (Fearnet.com).
