It all started in 1988 with an obsession: Canadian comic Carolyn Taylor, now known as one of the stars and co-creators of “Baroness Von Sketch Show,” was a “closeted 15-year-old” watching Olympic figure skating in her aunt’s living room. She recalls Katarina Witt performing a free skate to “Carmen” in an iconic red costume. At the very end, Witt performatively lay down on the ice — and Taylor just wanted to lie next to her.
“It was one of those foundational moments,” Taylor tells Variety. “But then I went on with my life, and didn’t pursue skating or Olympics in any capacity.”
Fast forward to 2016. Taylor was driving in the car with her girlfriend when Whitney Houston’s 1992 song “I Have Nothing” came on the radio. “It was as if I had heard it for the first time,” she recalls. She had a vision of “a professional pairs, gold medalist skating routine,...

Peacock, whose 2020 rollout initially was predicated on the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, had to switch gears when Covid-19 forced the postponement of the Games to 2021.
On Wednesday, the NBCUniversal streaming service launched a dedicated pop-up channel with one year to go before the rescheduled start of the Tokyo Games. The 24/7 “Road to Tokyo” channel, a collaboration with NBC Olympics, is dedicated to Olympic and Paralympic history, documentaries and studio programming.
As the news of the channel went out, the atmosphere was notably less ebullient in Japan, according to press reports. A small group of organizers gathered without fans for a ceremony marking the one-year mark from the new start of the Games, but participants acknowledged a high degree of uncertainty remains. The president of the Olympic organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, told local broadcaster Nhk that the 2021 plan would not be feasible if current rates of infection persist around the world.

Once again, Donald Trump has proven that while he likes to dole out criticism, he can’t take it. He often fires back at female critics by insulting their appearance, as these 13 women prove. Rosie O’Donnell Trump had this to say about the comedian on a 2006 episode of “Entertainment Tonight”: “Rosie O’Donnell is disgusting, both inside and out. If you take a look at her, she’s a slob…If I were running The View, I’d fire Rosie. I’d look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers and say, ‘Rosie, you’re fired.

Did Russian skater Adelina Sotnikova really deserve to win gold in the women's free skate over South Korea's Yuna Kim? Despite disbelief from some observers, the judges watching Thursday in Sochi said yes. And while a hint of a scandal is brewing, the International Olympic Committee said Friday that at this point, there is no need to doubt those judges. "I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself," Ioc spokesman Mark Adams said when asked whether the judges' scores should be questioned, according to USA Today. "I think we need a little of a reality check here. [Sotnikova's] performance was...

Let’s not mince words. Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova owned the night. Seemingly out of nowhere, the Russian figure skater became a podium contender (not to mention EW’s Olympic Stud of the Day) on Wednesday. With Thursday’s finals, she proved she was worthy of the title once more.
As was only appropriate, Sotnikova’s path to victory started with some no-joke training methods:
Though Sotnikova didn’t smack — or at least wasn’t filmed smacking — the rink’s wall before her free skate like she did before the short program, the 17-year-old was nonetheless impressively intense as she landed doubles,...

Nobody saw this coming. Have you noticed yourself fast-forwarding through Adam Levine's critiques on The Voice and waiting patiently for Christina Aguilera to speak? Have you noticed that's an absolutely insane scenario? Because I'm doing it too. And I'm scared.
Christina Aguilera has become the show's least sympathetic and/or sentimental panelist. She's thoroughly genuine, and even if she doesn't reach the caliber of my favorite 10 reality judges, she's exactly what The Voice needs: unflinching truth-telling. I hope she keeps it up in the weeks to come. Not just because it's entertaining (How about when she smacked Down her former Mousketeer buddy Tony Lucca?), but because it heightens the show's stakes. Following a raft of comments on Twitter about the figure skater's risque outfits on the pre-watershed Sunday night show, German tabloid Bild hit back with a story featuring pictures of over-exposed British glamour models Katie Price and Jodie Marsh.

Heidi Range has blasted 'Dancing On Ice' judge Katarina Witt as "unfair". The Sugababes singer - who was voted off the ITV1 show on Sunday (19.02.12) - thinks the German skating champion singled her out and unnecessarily criticised her lifts, which she found "really tough". Heidi explained: "It was unfair because it was never said to any of the other girls, 'Oh he puts you in your lifts'. With the other girls it was always acknowledged what they'd done to hold themselves and get into that lift. "But with mine she seemed to dismiss how much effort I put into them. You have...

Dancing on Ice star Heidi Range has said she believes that judge Katarina Witt was biased against her. The Sugababes singer, who was eliminated from the ITV contest along with Sebastien Foucan on Sunday (February 19), took issue with Witt's statement that she was unable to get herself into lifts like the other girls. "It was unfair because it was never said to any of the other girls, 'Oh he puts you in your lifts'," Range told The Sun. "With the other girls it was always acknowledged what they'd done to hold themselves and get into that lift. "But with mine she seemed to dismiss how much effort I put into them. You have to go for it and hold yourself in there and it is terrifying. It was never said to any of the other girls. I took it personally because (more)...

Sebastien Foucan and Heidi Range have been eliminated from Dancing on Ice. The pair fell in the bottom three along with Chemmy Alcott when viewers' votes and judges' scores for their ultimate skills tests earlier were combined. All three were then challenge to perform a solo skills test in the skate-off, with head judge Robin Cousins making the sole decision as to who would be saved. Foucan's fate appeared to be sealed when he forgot a large portion of his sequence and was forced to skate aimlessly around the ice. He broke down in tears upon stepping out of the rink and was comforted by professional partner Brainne Delcourt, as well as skate-off rival Alcott. "I am so sorry because this is heartbreaking," judge Katarina Witt told him. "We've seen you performing so well." Louie Spence concurred: (more)...

Rosemary Conley became the latest star to leave 'Dancing On Ice' last night (12.02.12). The diet and fitness guru - who landed in the bottom two alongside Chemmy Alcott - was given the boot after judges Louie Spence, Katarina Witt and Robin Cousins voted unanimously to keep the skiing champion in the ITV1 celebrity skating competition. Wearing a frilly fuchsia dress, the 64-year-old star - who is the oldest ever competitor to reach this stage of the show - failed to impress with her Valentine's Day themed routine of The Pretenders' 'I'll Stand By You'. However, she praised Chemmy as 'brilliant' and admitted she has 'loved' every minute of her 'Dancing On Ice' journey. Rosemary told host Phillip Schofield:...

Rosemary Conley has become the sixth celebrity to leave this year's series of Dancing On Ice. The 64-year-old was eliminated after failing to impress with her Valentine's Day routine, landing in the bottom two alongside Chemmy Alcott when judges' scores and viewer votes were combined. After the skate-off, the panel of Louie Spence, Katarina Witt and Robin Cousins praised both stars for having improved on their original routines, but unanimously elected to save Alcott. However, Spence went on to describe Conley as "an inspiration" and "a true lady", while Witt added: "You know that you had my admiration from the first second." 'Dancing On Ice' judge Katarina Witt is to skate for the first time in four years as part of an Olympics special. In order to commemorate this summer's 2012 London Games, the German gold medal winner will join fellow Olympic champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean - who are mentors on the ITV1 show - as well as co-panellist Robin Cousins, on the ice. While Katarina bagged a ladies' single gold in the 1984 winter games, rivals Torvill and Dean took home the top prize in the ice dance category for their legendary Bolero performance, while Robin won gold in the men's singles four years earlier. A 'Dancing On Ice' insider told The Sun newspaper: 'It sounds like a no-brainer,...

A special Dancing on Ice show will reportedly air in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Show mentors Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean will step into the rink with judge Robin Cousins for the extravaganza, while new panellist Katarina Witt is to skate for the first time since a farewell tour in 2008. Sources report that ITV bosses ran into issues convincing the stars to skate together, given Witt's rivalry with Torvill and Dean at the 1984 Games in Sarajevo. "It sounds like a no-brainer, getting all four to dance, but it wasn't easy," insiders told The Sun. "Jayne and Chris are billed as the show legends so asking their rival Olympic medallist (more)...

Louie Spence claims his friendship with Jason Gardner is stronger than 'Dancing On Ice'. Jason and fellow former judge Emma Bunton were dropped from the panel of the ITV1 show earlier this year and replaced by Louie and Katarina Witt, but the dancer says his close pal Jason doesn't hold a grudge against him. Speaking on ITV1's 'This Morning', he said: 'We had lunch yesterday and he's been having a great time, he's absolutely fine - I mean our friendship is so much stronger than any TV show. 'We are great friends and there is no animosity between us, and that's show business - jobs come and go. That's been the same; I was in 'Cats', Jason was...

Charlene Tilton was voted off 'Dancing On Ice' last night (05.02.12). The 'Dallas' actress was sent home after losing the skate-off against children's TV presenter Sam Nixon, with her performance of Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' not enough to suitably impress show judges Robin Cousins, Louie Spence and Katarina Witt. Undeterred by the fact she was being sent home, she told host Phillip Schofield: 'I feel alright. I have worked with the best wardrobe and make-up team I have ever worked with, I've had fun.' Earlier in the show, Charlene had stated her aim has been not to end up in the bottom two for a third consecutive week. She said: 'This routine is definitely pushing me. I knew...

Charlene Tilton has become the fifth celebrity to leave Dancing on Ice. The Dallas star was booted out after falling into the bottom two with Sam Nixon when viewer votes and judges' scores were combined. After the pair reprised their 'pop'-themed performances in the skate-off, Louie Spence opened the panel vote by giving his backing to Nixon, saying that he "delivered when the heat was on". Robin Cousins sealed the 53-year-old's fate by stating that she "doesn't compete" with Nixon, while Katarina Witt confirmed that she would have also saved the Cbbc presenter, despite Tilton having given "a more solid performance" second time around. Dancing on Ice judge Katarina Witt has revealed that she was spied on by East Germany's secret police The Olympic champion figure skater, who joined the ITV1 show this year, was tracked by the communist regime for 17 years to ensure she didn't defect to the West, The Mirror reports. "I discovered the Stasi had me in their sights when I was an 8-year-old figure-skating student. I had been watched over my entire life - observed, spied upon, manipulated. When I eventually got hold of my Stasi file there were 3,000 pages, in 27 boxes. I was shocked and horrified by the extent of it," she said. "I went through all kinds of emotions - anger, disbelief, laughter at the absurdity of it. You think, 'Oh my God - how can somebody spy on your life when you're only eight years old? Ok, by 19 I was an Olympic champion and the (more)...
