Veteran documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner and her wife, Morgan Doctor, were working on a film in Rome on Jan. 7 when they got a late-night phone call. It was Timoner’s brother. He was calling to inform his sister that he and his family, and their 86-year-old mother, Lisa, had all evacuated to her home in Altadena.
“They all came to my house because the wind was barely even blowing there,” says Timoner. “They had all been evacuated from their Altadena homes. So, they got to my place, and my brother started making dinner. There was no evacuation order whatsoever, and then suddenly the power went off, and they saw flames, and everybody panicked and left.”
Timoner and Doctor were alarmed by the call on Jan. 7 but got on their scheduled flight to Budapest the following day. They were traveling to Hungary to interview a Holocaust survivor. When they arrived, Timoner...

For the first time in 47 years, all five Best Actress Oscar nominees hail from Best Picture nominees.
The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.
The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

Two weeks on from the start of the wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, Los Angeles is still dealing with and processing the tragedy that has taken at least 28 lives and destroyed thousands of homes across the city.
However, there has been an overwhelming level of support from residents, who are donating money and clothes, sheltering people who lost their homes and providing support for first responders.
Deadline has launched a two-part podcast series, L.A. Fires Aftermath: The Path Forward, to try and help give people an idea of what else they can do.
Annette Bening, the Nyad star who is chair of the Entertainment Community Fund; her colleague Keith McNutt, who is the fund’s Western Region Director; Anne Lee, who co-founded the nonprofit Core with Sean Penn; and Lindsey Horvath, who is the Los Angeles County Supervisor for the third district, which is the area encapsulating the Palisades fire,...

As the wildfires continue to incinerate homes, Annette Bening wants those who work across the entertainment community to know that the Entertainment Community Fund is here to offer immediate short term help.
Bening is Chairman of the Board of the Entertainment Community Fund, which was long known as The Actors Fund until the name was changed to reflect the widened scope of its philanthropy. It has the coffers and infrastructure to quickly disperse money to help homeless and displaced entertainment professionals in dire need. That help is available on its website.
The Oscar-nominated actress is making an appeal today as the fires continue to burn, the toll growing worse for industry workers. It goes well beyond seeing a house burned to the ground and needing a temporary place for families to live. The psychological toll is unimaginable, and Bening said she wants those who’ve already been struggling in recent...

Even in its most buoyant moments, Stephen Frears’s The Grifters retains a palpable, stifling air of desperation and moral rot. The trio of grifters at the center of the 1990 crime thriller are introduced via a visual triptych, in which each of them are donning designer sunglasses and a slick outfit as they ready themselves for their respective cons. But despite their suave appearances, these schemers—Lilly (Anjelica Huston), Roy (John Cuscack), and Myra (Annette Bening)—aren’t living large.
There are no obscenely rich marks, no luxurious locales, no big score that’ll allow them to sail off into the sunset. No, while Lilly skims a little off the top of her employer’s winnings at a horse racetrack, Roy heads to a dive bar for a money swap that nets him a whopping $10 and Myra seduces a jewelry shop owner. Roy later works a similar scam that earns...

Image Source: Warner Bros. For years, Hollywood has been fascinated by alien life, sparking countless films. Tim Burton, a big fan of this genre, added his own twist in the 1990s with 1996’s Mars Attacks! This film is a star-studded parody, paying homage to the quirky, low-budget alien invasion movies of the past. Burton’s love for these classic sci-fi stories shines through, mixing humor, chaos, and nostalgia into a memorable movie experience. Mars Attacks! features a stellar cast, including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Michael J. Fox, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Their performances bring a playful, over-the-top vibe, blending A-list glamour with quirky storytelling. As the film was released, Burton shared that he couldn’t resist poking fun at a genre he cherished. Despite being some of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis only collaborated once in the late 90s, with their film being the center of a major controversy. The Siege was the first and only film the two did together, with each having massive hits both before and after they finally appeared in a movie together. Their films have endured for decades, and will continue to do so.
Denzel Washington has a particularly strong filmography in the '90s, with Malcolm X, Philadelphia, He Got Game, and Much Ado About Nothing. Bruce Willis was considered one of the best action stars of all time in that decade, starring in films like the Die Hard franchise, The Fifth Element, and Armageddon. Adam Driver has had one of the more idiosyncratic career arcs of any actor working today. After making his on-screen debut in the TV series The Unusuals in 2009, Driver went on to play supporting roles in numerous independents. These included scene-stealing performances in films such as Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis. He also played smaller roles in films by acclaimed directors such as Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg, including J. Edgar and Lincoln. Starting in 2015, he transitioned to the mainstream when he made his debut as Kylo Ren in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
Since making his Star Wars debut, the roles Driver takes on have been incredibly varied and often mocked. This is evidenced through parts in Marriage Story and this year's critically panned Megalopolis, both of which have subsequently been the subject of memes. Even apart from these virally ridiculed moments, Driver has made...

Despite some excellent movies hitting theaters, 2024 was, to use a sports phrase, a rebuilding year. The 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes ground Hollywood to a halt before the studios ultimately agreed to some much-needed concessions for the folks who physically make the films and TV shows we all love, and the downstream effects of that unnecessarily drawn-out labor stoppage spilled into 2024. Movies and shows that were supposed to come out needed time to restart production, studios delayed some releases into 2025, and the industry as a whole experienced a contraction. The first half of this year was rough at the box office, but thanks to several major wins near the end of the year, theatrical exhibition managed to stay alive and make up a ton of ground.
While we'll likely be seeing the effects of the strikes and the subsequent contraction for a while, the floodgates are preparing to open for...

Exclusive: Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman, André Holland, Alison Brie and Tom Sturridge are leading Alex Vlack’s feature directorial debut, the drama The Revisionist.
The production, written by Vlack, is currently shooting in Louisville, Ky.
In The Revisionist, Elise, a successful novelist, does what so many writers do: she manipulates and transforms the people in her life into the characters she needs for her story. As she blurs the line between fiction and reality, her world descends into secrets, lies, and outright betrayal. The project is an exploration of the psychological lengths to which a writer will go to achieve their art.
Pic is also produced by Vlack along with Arielle Elwes, Veronica Radaelli, Zachary Spicer, Fiona Robert and Sophia Robert. Vlack’s previous work includes directing and executive producing the documentary Still Bill about soul legend Bill Withers.

Was Annette Bening supposed to play Catwoman? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Yes, the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns. Annette Bening had already accepted the job back in the early ‘90s—but then, motherhood showed up uninvited, like an unplanned plot twist in a Batman script.
Annette Bening was all in for Selina Kyle. She got cast, fitted for a catsuit, and even went through the process of body casting—like, a full-body mold of her shape. But life, as it often does, threw a curveball. She got pregnant. Surprise pregnancy. Like an unexpected villain making a grand entrance. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bening shared how it all went down:

Angelina Jolie is a strong contender for Best Actress at the 2025 Oscars thanks to her performance in Maria. She plays opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's drama acquired by Netflix, and the dramatic turn has brought her plenty of awards buzz. She's our predicted Best Actress winner for the 2025 Oscars at the moment even. Now that Maira is streaming on Netflix and more people - specifically Oscar voters - have the chance to witness or revisit her performance, this is the time when Jolie's campaign should be pushed extra hard for her third Oscar nomination.
The visibility that comes with Maria streaming on Netflix should bolster Angelina Jolie's Oscar chances. It's now something that most people have access to, whereas Mikey Madison (Anora) may still be missed by some, and most have yet to see Nicole Kidman (Babygirl). In the past 96 years of the Academy Awards, there have only been two years in which two Black women were nominated for Best Actress in the same year. That ignominious statistic could very well change for the better this year, as performers Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”) are both closing in on nominations.
Erivo’s star turn as Elphaba, a role which won the Best Musical Actress trophy at the 2004 Tony Awards for Idina Menzel, currently ranks fifth in our combined Oscar odds. It would mark her second nomination in the category, following her breakout film role as Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” (2019). The actress earned two nominations that year, also receiving recognition for the song “Stand Up,” which she wrote with Joshuah Brian Campbell. The Tony winner for “The Color Purple” currently has 80% of experts and 40% of Gold Derby editors predicting her for the nom.

Even Philip Seymour Hoffman recognized how “hard” Mike Nichols was on Marcia Gay Harden during the famed “The Seagull” Broadway production in 2001.
More than 20 years later, Harden recalled during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, how director Nichols treated her like the “guinea pig” during the star-studded play. Years later, Nichols apologized to Harden for how he treated her — but only after Hoffman’s urging.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film "Captain Marvel" was, kind of by necessity, a prequel. The sci-fi actioner was released on the heels of "Avengers: Infinity War," a film that had wiped out half of the MCU and set the stage for the Infinity Saga's climax with "Avengers: Endgame," a movie that would come out after "Captain Marvel." As such, it was an appropriate moment to go back in time.
"Captain Marvel" follows the titular hero (Brie Larson), a super-powered human with a fractured memory who's been trained to function as a high-octane agent of the imperialistic Kree Empire on Hala, a distant planet and the Kree's capital world. The machinations of the plot eventually bring her to Earth in 1995. There, she learns about her human past after joining forces with Nick Fury, then only a lower-ranked employee of S.H.I.E.L.D. played...

The best Annette Bening movies and TV shows prove that she is one of the top actresses in Hollywood history. However, she also has one disappointing fact about her career. She is one of the few actors to ever earn nominations at the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys, yet never walk away with a single win. Bening got her start working in theater for a Shakespeare company in the 1980s and then finally moved into movies right as the decade was coming to an end.
Bening earned her first Tony nomination before she made her name in movies and TV shows, but when she took on the role of con artist Myra Langtry in The Grifters, she picked up her first Oscar nod, and her film career was officially rolling. Bening went on to earn Oscar nominations four more times, with roles in American Beauty, Being Julia, The Kids Are All Right,...

Chris Pine's directorial debut, which he also stars in, has become a streaming success despite its dismal 22% Rotten Tomatoes score. Pine is perhaps best known for his franchise roles, starting with Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies, which include 2009's Star Trek, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond. From there, he also starred as Steve Trevor in the Dceu movies, 2017's Wonder Woman and its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.
Outside of franchise fare, Pine first rose to prominence for his roles in romantic comedies, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 and Just My Luck in 2006. From there, he was cast in Star Trek, but continued to appear in other possible franchise-starters, playing Cinderella's Prince in Disney's Into the Woods and Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Darren Barrenman uncovers a crime at the end of Poolman, and the movie can leave viewers with a number of questions. The 2023 film is the directorial debut of movie star Chris Pine, who also leads the Poolman cast as Barrenman. The movie also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, DeWanda Wise, Danny DeVito, and Annette Bening. Poolman's poor reviews weren't a promising start, but it's managed to find a home and audience streaming on Hulu.
Poolman Darren Barrenman takes on detective work for the first time in his life when a woman named June Del Ray informs him that City Councilman Stephen Toronkowski has some shady dealings going on behind the scenes. Darren pursues Toronkowski, believing that he's part of a dealing going on with Teddy Hollandaise, a sketchy businessman. Chris Pine's directorial debut, Poolman, features an all-star cast of iconic movie actors. The 2023 film pays homage to film noir movie classics like Chinatown, with a convoluted mystery plotline centered around Darren Barrenman, a poolman with an interest in local community issues. Darren gets tangled in a web of bizarre characters and corruption as he navigates a case he isn't really qualified to be investigating.
Though Poolmans reviews didnt amount to the same success as noir classics, the all-star cast may still appeal to audiences. Poolmans leading stars and supporting cast members include recognizable faces from iconic movies, shows, and franchises. Though some may only appear on-screen for brief scenes, the cast is impressive nonetheless.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios just won a battle for Love of Your Life, a spec by Nyad scribe Julia Cox, Deadline hears. Love of Your Life has been the talk of town this Halloween, and sources said the result is one of the biggest spec script deals in recent memory, landing in the $2 million range. Ryan Gosling is attached to produce with new producing partner Jessie Henderson at General Admission.
Numerous bids were proffered when CAA dropped the spec on the town, and one of the most intriguing bids came from Taylor Sheridan and Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, who were ready to pay $2 million with a greenlight and a theatrical release. David Ellison’s Skydance got in the game with them, assuming the bid so they could keep their money in their pockets. That film would have gone through Paramount. Bleecker Street executives Kent Sanderson and Myles Bender can vividly remember their first time seeing “Eye in the Sky,” a drone warfare thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman that premiered in 2015 at Toronto Film Festival with hopes of finding distribution. Not long into the Canadian screening, they were held rapt by film but quickly realized their contemporaries in the room didn’t feel the same way.
“Within 15 minutes, I started watching a lot of other buyers get up and leave. I guess they felt the film was too challenging,” says Sanderson, Bleecker Street’s president. He and Bender, head of marketing and creative advertising, pushed for their boss, the film company’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Karpen, to watch the film so they could bid on the distribution rights. Bender recalls, “We were looking at each other and saying, ‘What are we seeing that they aren’t?’”

Saldaña, 46, who is the only performer in history to have starred in four films that have grossed more than $2 billion, and who shared the best actress prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with her Emilia Pérez costars Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, will be presented with her award following a screening of the film on the evening of Friday, Nov. 1, at the Scad Trustees Theatre.
Earlier that evening, at 5:15pm Et, the actress will sit down with yours truly at the Scad Museum of Art,...

The latest round of fears about the screen legend’s well-being began back in March when he was conspicuously absent from daughter Ella’s Broadway debut.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle Best Actress, which has two favorites and lots of viable contenders for the other three spots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’re back together to type about what is annually our favorite category: the Best Actress race. In terms of quantity, this year feels no different than previous years, with several performers seemingly vying for one of the five Oscar slots. But as you’ve said when we’ve spoken about this Irl, while there are many contenders, the race maybe doesn’t feel broadly competitive as years past — and once critics groups and precursor awards start being doled out, maybe Best Actress locks into a set five or six contenders very quickly. But...
