Veteran documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner and her wife, Morgan Doctor, were working on a film in Rome on Jan. 7 when they got a late-night phone call. It was Timoner’s brother. He was calling to inform his sister that he and his family, and their 86-year-old mother, Lisa, had all evacuated to her home in Altadena.

“They all came to my house because the wind was barely even blowing there,” says Timoner. “They had all been evacuated from their Altadena homes. So, they got to my place, and my brother started making dinner. There was no evacuation order whatsoever, and then suddenly the power went off, and they saw flames, and everybody panicked and left.”

The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.

Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, and her brother Jake Gyllenhaal, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Wicked,” “Gladiator 2,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part Two” among the titles landing nominations.

The costume designers behind “The Book of Clarence,” “Gladiator II,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and

“Saturday Night” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “Challengers,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” “The Fall Guy ” and “The Substance” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell is nominated in the excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film category. This is his fifth guild nomination. He won in 2021 for “Hamilton” in the excellence in variety, reality-competition or live television category. Tazewell has emerged as a frontrunner for the costuming Oscar. If he does so, he will make history as the first Black man to win that category.

In the past 96 years of the Academy Awards, there have only been two years in which two Black women were nominated for Best Actress in the same year. Erivo’s star turn as Elphaba, a role which won the Best Musical Actress trophy at the 2004 Tony Awards for Idina Menzel, currently ranks fifth in our combined Oscar odds. Even Philip Seymour Hoffman recognized how “hard” Mike Nichols was on Marcia Gay Harden during the famed “The Seagull” Broadway production in 2001.

More than 20 years later, Harden recalled during Sony Music Entertainment’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, how director Nichols treated her like the “guinea pig” during the star-studded play. The sci-fi actioner was released on the heels of "Avengers: Infinity War," a film that had wiped out half of the MCU and set the stage for the Infinity Saga's climax with "Avengers: Endgame," a movie that would come out after "Captain Marvel." Darren gets tangled in a web of bizarre characters and corruption as he navigates a case he isn't really qualified to be investigating.

Though Poolmans reviews didnt amount to the same success as noir classics, the all-star cast may still appeal to audiences. Poolmans leading stars and supporting cast members include recognizable faces from iconic movies, shows, and franchises. John Magaro went from an extra on a Steven Spielberg film to leading his own movie about the same tragic events 20 years later.

Poolman has set its streaming release date, and it is coming soon. Poolman is the directorial debut of Chris Pine, who is primarily known for his acting in films such as Wonder Woman, Star Trek and Into the Woods. The debut feature told the story of a poolman named Darren Barrenman whose days working for the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment in Los Angeles end up revealing truths about the city. Pine himself plays the lead role in Poolman, with a supporting cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, John Ortiz, and Stephen Tobolowsky.

As per Collider, viewers can soon catch Poolman at home as the film sets its streaming release date. Poolman will be available to stream on Hulu starting on November 8. It will be the film's first streaming home since its theatrical release this past spring.

The world’s largest college-run film festival, the Scad Savannah film festival, returns to Georgia Oct. 26 with its consistently eclectic programming mix of documentaries, box office hits, indies, animated films, short films and more.

“Scad honors the screen’s brightest stars, from Annette Bening to Lupita Nyong’o to Richard Linklater,” says Scad President and founder Paula Wallace. “Come for the stars and stay for a tour of Scad’s recently expanded Savannah Film Studios backlot… glitz, glamour, and good films.”

This year’s programming includes of Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” and Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” as well as a centerpiece screening of Robbie Williams’ unconventional biopic “Better Man.” The festival will also screen “Emilia Peréz,” Jacques Audiard’s musical drama which won the Jury Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and a 35mm print of Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” which netted the filmmaker the Silver Lion for directing in Venice earlier this year.

Women In Film celebrated a slew of women in the entertainment industry at their 2024 Wif Honors Thursday night.

The annual benefit, held at The Beverly Hilton, supports the organization’s educational and philanthropic programs. The gala awarded five awards throughout the evening, which was themed “The Power of the Collective,” to “industry leaders who demonstrate how strength in collaboration, inclusion and uplifting stories can change culture for the better,” according to a release.

Annette Bening received the first honor of the night, the Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award, presented by Fonda herself. “Over the last few years, I’ve read interviews with Annette. I never miss an interview, especially when she talks about her craft, because you always learn something,” Fonda told the audience of Bening.

“I discovered her empathy and her generosity,” she continued, highlighting her work as chair of the Entertainment Community Fund. Bening thanked Fonda and dove into some topical subjects.

Joey King, Kate Winslet, and Kerry Washington were among the stars celebrated with special awards at the 2024 Wif Honors event!

The star-studded evening, themed “The Power of the Collective,” took place on Thursday night (October 24) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

The event is an annual benefit supporting Wif’s educational and philanthropic programs, and its advocacy for gender parity in entertainment. Other honorees at the event included Annette Bening, Michelle Buteau, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and Ellen Kuras and some of the presenters included Jane Fonda, Marion Cotillard, Janelle James, and more.

The celebrated actor and filmmaker Kevin Costner has been tapped by the Scad Savannah Film Festival to receive its Legend of Cinema Award, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively report.

Costner will be presented with the honor following a Nov. 1 afternoon screening of Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, the first installment of an epic Western film series that he directed and stars in, and a Q&a about the film, moderated by yours truly, in which he will field questions alongside the film’s cinematographer J. Michael Muro (Cas), costume designer Lisa Lovaas, film editor Miklos Wright (Ace) and re-recording mixer Joe DeAngelis.

Bleecker Street executives Kent Sanderson and Myles Bender can vividly remember their first time seeing “Eye in the Sky,” a drone warfare thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman that premiered in 2015 at Toronto Film Festival with hopes of finding distribution. Not long into the Canadian screening, they were held rapt by film but quickly realized their contemporaries in the room didn’t feel the same way.

“Within 15 minutes, I started watching a lot of other buyers get up and leave. I guess they felt the film was too challenging,” says Sanderson, Bleecker Street’s president. He and Bender, head of marketing and creative advertising, pushed for their boss, the film company’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Karpen, to watch the film so they could bid on the distribution rights. Bender recalls, “We were looking at each other and saying, ‘What are we seeing that they aren’t?’”

Legendary Hollywood icons Annette Bening, Richard Linklater, and Jerry Bruckheimer will be celebrated at the 2024 Scad Savannah Film Festival.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad) has announced its first list of honorees for the 2024 festival, which will take place from October 26 to November 2. This year, “Nyad” star Bening’s legacy will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony will take place after a screening of Bening’s 1990 film “The Grifters.”

Similarly, “Hit Man” writer/director Linklater will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Screenwriting Award, with the Netflix film screening at the festival.

Mega-producer Bruckheimer will reflect on his career during an In Conversation event before receiving the Legend of Entertainment Award at the festival.

Exclusive: Kyle Allen (A Haunting in Venice), Francesca Carpanini and Abubakr Ali (Grendel) are the latest talent to join Kathryn Bigelow’s new Netflix film.

The untitled thriller also stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso, Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Malachi Beasley and Aminah Nieves. The film’s title and plot remain under wraps, though sources tell Deadline it will be set at the White House as a national crisis unfolds.
