"The Simpsons" has no shortage of memorable characters, but many of them are voiced by the same stable of actors who voice the main cast. Harry Shearer, Hank Azaria, and Dan Castellaneta are immensely talented voice actors, but sometimes, a role comes along that needs someone else to take the wheel.
There are some common reasons why celebrities agree to guest star on "The Simpsons." But even if they're only doing it because their kids made them, they can still make an impact, even if their character is never seen again after a single appearance. Whether they were simply funny or profoundly affected a member of the main cast, these celebrity cameos weren't just gimmicks. They helped change the DNA of the sitcom.

Last week, the Broadway play All In: Comedy About Love got very dramatic about money – weekly box office, specifically, with grosses topping $1 million, an impressive feat for any play not named Mary. Figure in that All In isn’t really a play at all, but a collection of readings by the short comic fiction writer Simon Rich and I thought the box office tally seemed something akin to a Christmas miracle.
Then I actually saw All In, and count me among the Rich converts. Directed by the ever nimble Alex Timbers and performed by a rotating cast of four actors – I was lucky to get the truly excellent John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind – the 90-minute All In is a perfect holiday snickerdoodle, a light and tasty snack no less funny for its brevity and lack of splashy production values.

The Electric State looks like the most Netflix movie ever made. It’s a sci-fi action dramedy starring Millie Bobby Brown that reportedly cost over $300 million to produce due to Netflix’s talent buyout compensation structure. You can gaze upon all that money in the new trailer the streaming service released Wednesday, which has 53,000 views after three hours at press time.
The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Gray Man. It stars Mbb with long hair and Chris Pratt with a different hairstyle than he’s ever had before. The film is set in a retro-futurist alternate universe 1994 after a robot uprising ended with humans banishing robots to a sort of open-air prison spanning much of the American West. Brown plays Michelle, a teenage girl who teams up with a nice robot and a disillusioned veteran of the robot...

Live from New York ... it's Broadway. Former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich has a new Broadway play, and he's brought in some of the show's biggest stars from past and present.
Rich spent four years as a writer on Saturday Night Live, joining the staff in 2007. He frequently collaborated with John Mulaney, writing elaborate premise-based sketches that often found their audience after "Weekend Update" when more experimental material got a chance to shine.
Now, Rich is taking his talents to broadway with All In: Comedy About Love. The play takes Rich's short stories about dating, marriage, and heartbreak and has some of his comedian friends read the stories out loud.
All In will run between December 18 and February 16 at the Hudson Theater in New York City. Performances will feature a rotating cast of four actors, several of whom have connections to Saturday Night Live.

During the early '90s, there were few TV actresses hotter in Hollywood than Lara Flynn Boyle. After a handful of supporting credits in the late '80s in movies like "Poltergeist III" and shows like "Amerika," Boyle landed a main cast role as Donna Hayward on David Lynch and Mark Frost's genre-bending supernatural mystery series "Twin Peaks." When the show quickly became a pop culture sensation, Boyle was launched to stardom, and she got plenty of opportunities to show off her talents in the show's first season, where Donna is particularly central to the plot.
In the wake of her "Twin Peaks" fame, Boyle appeared in a number of prominent movies through the early '90s, playing Stacy in "Wayne's World" and co-starring in the 1992 Matthew Modine film "Equinox," among others. She was also a prominent face in celebrity news through the decade, dating other stars like "Twin Peaks" castmate Kyle MacLachlan,...

Plenty of comedy stars have popped in for a cameo when their old sitcom costars get a new gig — think Cheers’ Ted Danson visiting the original Frasier or most of the Community cast stopping by Ken Jeong’s Dr. Ken. But some sitcom stars have such amazing chemistry that they need to keep a good thing going.
Here are five pairs of funny people who costarred together in multiple sitcoms…
1 Danny McBride and Walton Goggins
McBride and Goggins headlined Vice Principals as competing a-holes vying to rule the school via promotion to the top job. When McBride went on to create The Righteous Gemstones for HBO, he again enlisted Goggins as a failed child star who once headlined a gospel song-and-dance team. Goggins told Conan O’Brien that McBride “is the funniest person I have ever met in my life.” The two even teamed to desecrate the reputations of Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar.

With a show like "The Simpsons," which has an undeniably perfect run of early seasons, It's impossible to pick a best episode. We at /Film have had a go at ranking the best seasons of "The Simpsons," and even ranking the best "Simpsons" episodes, but even then the process of trying to pick between unimpeachably brilliant installments reveals the futility of it all.
As almost everyone knows, the show lost its way as it went on, though the exact point at which it jumped the proverbial shark remains a hotly debated topic among fans. Even taking the most conservative view, i.e. that "The Simpsons" was only really good from seasons 4 to 8, that's still five seasons of 22 to 24 episodes each to pick from — all of them classic entries.

Even taking the most conservative view, i.e. that "The Simpsons" was only really good from seasons 4 to 8, that's still five seasons of 22 to 24 episodes each to pick from — all of them classic entries.
For those with a Comic Book Guy disposition, however, getting a final and resolute answer to this conundrum of the single best...

Bruce Springsteen on "The Simpsons"? Not yet, and if history holds, not anytime soon. The show has tried to get him as a guest star in many different episodes. There are apparently many Boss fans on the show's staff; voice actor Hank Azaria even has a Springsteen tribute band, "Hank Azaria & the Ez Street Band." Yet, Springsteen has turned down each and every offer.
It might be due to the bad experience the first time the show's creatives asked him. In a 1998 TV Guide interview, "Simpsons" writer Jay Kogen said he saw Springsteen by chance, so he went up and asked him to appear on the series. "He thought I was a maniac. We never heard from him," Kogen recalled.
The Springsteen "Simpsons" cameos that weren't meant to be include:
In "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish," Homer listens to a Bible on tape.

Here’s How Matt LeBlanc Landed The Role Of Joey Tribbiani In Friends? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Sometimes, destiny comes with a black eye—or a busted nose, in Matt LeBlanc’s case. Long before Friends became the ultimate sitcom juggernaut, LeBlanc’s audition for Joey Tribbiani took an unexpected (and slightly painful) turn. The night before one of his key auditions, LeBlanc and his buddy decided to embrace the “friends hanging out” vibe with a little too much enthusiasm. A few drinks in, he stumbled on his way to the bathroom, face-planted into a toilet, and walked away with a nose injury.
But here’s the twist: that very mishap became the golden ticket. LeBlanc showed up to his audition with a visible mark on his face. He spun the hilarious story like the charming goofball Joey himself when asked about it. It had the casting directors cracking up, sealing...

"The Simpsons" is not just one of the most influential series in history and a cultural phenomenon, but it's also possibly the greatest TV show of all time. Still, the animated sitcom is not without controversy. "The Simpsons" has been banned many times in many countries, whether it's the entire "Simpsons" movie being banned for an innocent color scheme or TV standards changing and banning the show from showing an animated butt.
Of course, there is another, rather infamous example of a "Simpsons" episode being banned. Most every long-running sitcom is eventually haunted by the problematic elements from its earlier episodes, and "The Simpsons" is no exception. Be that as it may, the "Simpsons" episode that was quietly removed from streaming was pulled for reasons that had nothing to do with its subject matter and everything to do with its guest star. Yes, I'm referring to season 3's "Stark Raving Dad,...

All good things must eventually come to an end. Even though "The Simpsons," which is now in its 36th season that included a fake finale, isn't ending, a key cast member of the show who has been there for 35 years is saying goodbye. Pamela Hayden, the voice behind characters such as Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, and many others, has announced her retirement from the classic animated series. Her final appearance airs in a matter of days. The show will then have to soldier on without her.
Hayden's final appearance will be in this week's episode "Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes." The announcement was made with a tribute video (which you can check out below). It features Hayden sharing her love for Milhouse in particular, as well as some of the other characters she's voiced on "The Simpsons" over the years. According to Deadline, Fox is going to...

"The Simpsons" is still a thing in 2024, even though nobody you know is watching it. While the general consensus is that the show hasn't been good for a while, it still manages to churn out the odd highlight, including a fake series finale inspired by a common fan question. What's more, you can still count on the "Treehouse of Horror" episodes to deliver top-quality "Simpsons."
Inspired by a '50s comic, the "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween episodes started in the show's second season, and have become a "Simpsons" tradition ever since (though that tradition almost ended before it began). The anthology episodes are responsible for some of the most memorable moments in the series' long history, and have developed their own mini traditions in and of themselves — one being renaming all the cast and crew in the episode credits to give them spooky-sounding names.

When the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 9, you may be surprised to see some new players on the field in the form of Bart and Homer Simpson.
That’s because in addition to the regular “Monday Night Football” telecast, ESPN+ and Disney+ will be offering a live, animated recreation of the game with “The Simpsons Funday Football.”
The House of Mouse dropped a teaser for the state-of-the-art sporting experience during halftime of Monday’s game. While the clip only shows Bart siding with the Bengals and Homer backing the Cowboys, the December game promises many more appearances from Springfield — including Krusty, Nelson, Milhouse, Ralph, Carl, Barney, Lenny and Moe. After throwing characters from Marvel and Toy Story into its ongoing battle to lure young viewers to its increasingly expensive sports telecasts, Disney’s ESPN is really bringing in the big guns.
Characters from the long-running animated series “The Simpsons” will join a December 9th “Monday Night Football” game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys in an animated “alterna-cast” that will stream on Disney+, ESPN+ and NFL+ while the usual traditional broadcast airs on ESPN. In the kids’ version of the game, Bart Simpson will play at times for the Bengals and his father, Homer, will fight for the Cowboys, while sister Lisa and mother Marge will interview players while baby Maggie operates the sky-cam.
Longtime “Simpsons” voice actors Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner and Yeardley Smith will voice several of their characters in prerecorded bits and sketches.

A Monday Night Football matchup later this season will feature two familiar characters, Bart and Homer Simpson, in the decidedly unfamiliar context of a live NFL football game.

Bart Simpson may soon have a new catchphrase in his repertoire: “Don’t have a Cowboy, man.”
The Walt Disney Co., the NFL and ESPN and teaming up to debut another animated alternative broadcast of an upcoming NFL game, but this time they are going big with “ESPN’s The Simpsons Funday Football.”
On Dec. 9, Disney+ and ESPN+ will stream the Dallas Cowboys-Cincinnati Bengals matchup, but it will take place in Springfield’s Atoms Stadium, with all the players replaced by dozens of animated characters based on those from the Fox and Disney+ series The Simpsons.
It will be the second year in a row that Disney+ will stream an animated version of an NFL game, but this year’s game will be bigger on multiple fronts: For starters, it is a Monday Night Football matchup, not a Sunday morning game like last year’s Toy Story game.

For decades, the line, “Cause she’s got a Great Ass,” shouted by Al Pacino in Michael Mann’s crime classic “Heat” has entertained, but also befuddled viewers. Most have chalked it up to Pacino’s lively performance style or the fact that his character is trying to mess with Hank Azaria’s, but in Pacino’s recently published memoir, “Sonny Boy,” he shared that the real reason LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna is so hyped up throughout the film is because he built his whole character around doing cocaine.
“A lot of people didn’t know that,” Pacino said in a recent interview on the “Wtf Podcast with Marc Maron” in which he discussed the memoir. “It took me 20 years before I could say anything about it.”
Though he was playing a character inspired by a real guy, Pacino developed his own version, making Hanna a recreational cocaine user and...

"Lost Verizon" is a very 2008-style "Simpsons" episode. It takes place during that period where cell phones were becoming the norm, even among kids Bart's age, and bases its first act around Bart trying (and eventually succeeding) to get his hands on one. The fact that the cell phone's a flip phone immediately dates the episode, which is a shame because flip phones were very cool in the 2000s, and they allowed you to hang up angrily with dramatic, cinematic gusto. Nevertheless, the episode's main storyline ages perfectly: It's about Marge deciding to use Bart's phone to track his every move, a prescient commentary on the way cell phones have restricted kids' privacy despite their original promise of freedom.
But before "Lost Verizon" can deal with all of that, it must first introduce us to Denis Leary, the famous Massachusetts actor from "Rescue Me" and "Ice Age." Leary shows up at the Springfield golf course,...

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Brother from the Same Planet", Homer (Dan Castellaneta) forgets about Bart (Nancy Cartwright) at soccer practice, leaving him to wait for many hours. Bart, as he often does, accuses Homer of being a terrible father, and seeks revenge by submitting his name to the Bigger Brother agency (a riff on Big Brothers Big Sisters of America) hoping to find a new temporary guardian to care for him. Bart is paired with a charming, caring man named Tom (Phil Hartman), an ultra-cool test pilot. Tom is gentle and attentive, and Bart enjoys the time they spend together. Bart eventually starts to feel guilty, though, when he realizes Tom's time could be spent caring for a more disadvantaged child than he.
As one might be able to intuit from watching the episode, Tom was meant to be played by a visiting celebrity, and Hartman, ever the professional,...

All October long, Cracked is catching up with some of the greatest writers in Simpsons history to discuss the most beloved segments from the “Treehouse of Horror” series. From the cursed monkey’s paw to Krusto the Clown, we’re digging into the making of some real fan-favorites.
When it comes to The Simpsons, longtime showrunner Al Jean has seen just about everything. Which means that when he’s picking show favorites, the competition is fierce. Maybe never more so than among “Treehouse of Horror” episodes, as he was half of the creative team behind the second one (with his stalwart writing partner Mike Reiss), and he’s played a role in pretty much every installment since.
When I ask him and Reiss for a favorite, though, the answer comes pretty easy: Season 26’s “Treehouse of Horror Xxv.”
Per usual, it contained three segments, all written by Stephanie Gillis. The first was “School Is Hell,...

This year’s New York Comic Con saw The Simpsons hold its first-ever panel at the event. It consisted of creator Matt Groening, showrunner Matt Selman, voice actor Hank Azaria and writers/producers Carolyn Omine and Tim Long.
One of the questions asked was when, if ever, another Simpsons movie would be forthcoming, as there hasn’t been a theatrical adventure for Springfield’s first family since 2007. Groening joked that it’d be in “2042,” but Selman was a bit more revealing, explaining that another film is something that’s been discussed. While he cautioned that “this isn’t an announcement,” he did say, “There probably will be another Simpsons movie.”
What it would look like and when it would be released is obviously still a total unknown, but given the show’s love for commemorating anniversaries, 2027 — the 20th anniversary of the first film — makes a lot of sense.
