The actor, 73, on her mother’s concentration camp experience, school dinners, Me Too, and her four ex-husbands
When my sister was born I realised the world didn’t revolve around me. It was a curious thing: like, well, who is that? I got over it. My mother had three of us in a row. We were like triplets and very close. There was never any animosity.
During the Second World War, my mother, a Dutch native living in Bandung, was incarcerated in three Japanese concentration camps in Indonesia. Helping others kept her going. She had nightmares and couldn’t talk about it for years afterwards, but was remarkably sane, considering what she’d been through.
After the war, she went to Saint-Tropez and met my father, who’d been in the Raf and was recovering from a broken back. Mother came bounding out of the water and didn’t realise...

Steven Spielberg has proved that he is the Jack of all trades and master of everything when it comes to versatility in cinema. A filmmaker who has never been boxed into any specific genre when it comes to his filmography, Spielberg has also worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest superstars in iconic films that have stood the test of time.

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we cover the 55th Academy Awards in 1983, honoring the films of 1982.
There was no suspense as to what would win heading into the ceremony. “Gandhi” dominated from top to bottom, winning eight awards from its leading 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Attenborough and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. The biopic did not have a Best Actress contender, but even if it did, there was no beating Meryl Streep, who prevailed for “Sophie’s Choice.” She was such a lock that even fellow nominee Debra Winger‘s parents were rooting for Streep.

Is cinema really gendered? Well, we would like to say no, but reality says otherwise. Although all movies can be enjoyed by both men and women, there are some that are more obviously made for each group.
For example, we know that silly romantic comedies are mostly watched by female audiences looking for love adventures, and hardcore action thrillers are mostly watched by men. But lately, there have been too many movies made for male audiences, and it seems that the creators have forgotten what a perfect male movie should be like.
We're tired of all the modern clichés that famous action actors like Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone bring to the genre, so let's take a look back and talk about these 5 real old manly dramas.

There isn't a more wearisome topic in the oft-wearisome realm of Film Discourse than the unkillable movie runtime debate. For those who actually care enough about cinema to read up on the wisdom dispensed by the medium's most learned critics and scholars, this superficial subject was succinctly settled when Roger Ebert wrote in his 1992 essay "The Thrill of Breaking the 120-Minute Barrier," "Bad movies are always too long, but good movies are either too short, or just right."
Of course, I've seen good movies that dragged a bit, and bad/disappointing movies that could be vastly improved by an expanded narrative focus. Franchise-launching first installments often fall into that former camp due to an excess of track-laying exposition; James Cameron's "Avatar" sags during its first two acts as he brings us up to the speed on the history/flora/fauna/what-have-you (and what you have is a lot) of...

Saying Steven Spielberg is a veteran director would dishonor his legendary career as his imaginative mind has changed cinema as we know it. From creating iconic movies like Jaws and Jurassic Park to Oscar-winning films like Schindler’s List, Spielberg has had quite a filmography to his name.
Hollywood director Steven Spielberg (image credit: Gage Skidmore/Wikimedia Commons)
Throughout his entire career, it has been noted and observed by people around him that Spielberg only does seven takes for a scene. Not furthering the number any higher, Spielberg’s shots are usually done in seven takes. However, one scene from Jurassic Park needed so much perfection that the director had to break his golden rule!

This first Hollywood studio feature with a black female director is a compelling account of a South African who turns against the ruling caste
In the late 80s, there were a number of films about apartheid South Africa that somehow made the black experience dramatically subordinate to white liberal activism. Chris Menges’s A World Apart from 1988 had Barbara Hershey as the white campaigner based on anti-apartheid activist Ruth First; the year before that, Richard Attenborough’s excruciatingly well-intentioned Cry Freedom was supposedly about the friendship between white journalist Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) and Steve Biko (Denzel Washington), but contrived to put Woods at the centre of the action, all but forgetting about Biko. Euzhan Palcy’s A Dry White Season from 1989, now released on Blu-ray, looks on the face of it to be the same sort of thing. And yet this movie is much tougher and shrewder on what...

So, can you resist the high-energy action of Jurassic Park, a cinematic marvel that not only shaped our childhoods but also stands out as a jewel in Steven Spielberg’s illustrious filmography?
The 1993 film, based on a screenplay by Michael Crichton and David Koepp, is undeniably entertaining, with those awe-inspiring dinosaurs romping through the primordial landscapes of our imaginations. Did we forget to mention the remote, scary island of Isla Nublar?
While the film is a masterpiece that integrates innovative visual effects & gripping storytelling, there is a lesser-known tidbit that adds a layer of human intrigue to the story. Behind the scenes, Sam Neill, our beloved Dr. Alan Grant, grappled with what he described as “an actor’s nightmare”: the quest for the perfect American accent.

Jurassic World Evolution is a popular construction and management simulation video game franchise. This gaming series is based on the famous movie series Jurassic World. So far, there are two gaming titles that have surfaced from Frontier Developments. The last installment came in November 2021.
Both of these titles have been a great success for Frontier. And that’s why a sequel was in high demand for so long. Frontier might have heard those demands, and Jurassic World Evolution 3 is on its way.
Jurassic World Evolution 3 Announced
Jurrasic World Evolution 3 will be released in FY26.
Frontier Development has recently announced its upcoming title, Jurassic World Evolution 3. The developing company has signed a license with Universal Products and Experiences to seal the deal.

Ruth Landers, who created the 1990s PBS kids show The Huggabug Club with her daughters, actresses Audrey Landers and Judy Landers, has died. She was 85.
A longtime resident of Sarasota, Florida, Landers died April 18 of natural causes, her family announced.
Audrey Landers, 67, portrayed Afton Cooper on Dallas on and off for seven seasons and played the dancer Val Clarke in the 1985 big-screen version of A Chorus Line, directed by Richard Attenborough. Judy Landers, 65, was on such TV shows as Vega$, B.J. and the Bear and Madam’s Place.
Aimed at preschoolers, The Huggabug Club featured Audrey as Miss Audrey and Judy as Miss Judy, working opposite full-bodied puppets. Filled with songs and scripts written by Audrey, it aired on PBS from January 1995 to June 1997, followed by years of reruns.

Bernard Hill, the actor known for playing King Théoden in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and Captain Edward Smith in “Titanic,” has died. He was 79.
Hill died early on Sunday morning, his agent Lou Colson confirmed to Variety. He was with his fiancée Alison and his son Gabriel. No cause of death was given.
Hill first came to prominence as Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale’s 1982 miniseries “Boys From the Blackstuff”; his character was known for his “gizza job” catchphrase. That same year, he portrayed Sergeant Putnam in the Richard Attenborough-directed film “Gandhi.” Hill appeared in multiple British television series during the ’70s and ’80s, including “I, Claudius,” “Crown Court,” “Rooms,” “Fox” and “Jackanory.”
In 1997, Hill played Captain Smith in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” which won 11 Oscars. He then joined Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” franchise as King Théoden, appearing in 2002’s “The Two Towers” and...

Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.
“It’ll be complementary in that sense, because Attenborough had some three hours to tell the story, which is a big story and a big life,...

Gandhi, the Indian period drama series currently in production, will reveal “the origin of Superman,” according to its makers.
In a series of interviews, stars Pratik Gandhi and Tom Felton, director Hansal Mehta and executive producer Sameer Nair revealed the latest on the show, which is being billed as one of the biggest to ever come out of India.
The show will tell the story of Mahatma Gandhi’s earlier adult years before becoming a political icon and nonviolence protest pioneer, in particular his time spent in London and South Africa.
“There are almost 45 years of life before the moment he becomes the Mahatma,” said Nair, CEO of Gandhi producer Applause Entertainment. “Of that, a large part was spent in London before he spent 23 in South Africa. There are a lot of elements of that story that are not known but are important to the history. Richard Attenborough’s [1982] movie covers it in 15 minutes,...

There is no denying that Robin Williams was one of the greatest entertainers to have graced the industry. His on-screen presence, improvisation skills, and comedic timing, all contributed to making him one of the best comedians of all time. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the financiers behind the 1992 biographical drama, Chaplin, wanted to cast him in the lead role. After all, he was taking the comedy genre by storm, wasn’t he?
Robin Williams in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009)
As fate would have it, though, the role ended up going to Robert Downey Jr. who did an incredible job and did justice to the life and personality of Charlie Chaplin. Appreciated by many for his performance, Robert Downey Jr. ended up receiving his first Oscar nomination, all thanks to this very role.

Even in this age of instant YouTube gratification, movie trailers are a big deal. They get us hyped for an upcoming project by making promises that the eventual film will (hopefully) pay off. The best sizzle reels are even able to do this by giving a taste of things to come without ruining any surprises or plot twists. Think about the teaser for Alien with its cracking egg and unnerving siren sound, or the deft use of a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” in the classic promo for The Social Network. Both of those examples speak to the haunting nature of their movies while allowing space for the film to stand on its own down the road.
But some trailers do their job too well. Some trailers outdo the movies they advertise, sometimes because the film has a concept too shallow to sustain more than three minutes, and sometimes...

He had barely started his career when abuse left him mentally ill. But he went on to phenomenal success – and has just been made president of the UK’s leading drama school
This is the first time David Harewood has stepped through the doors of Rada’s London headquarters since he became its president in mid-February, and he’s immediately struck by flashbacks of his time as a student here. “Stunning memories,” he says. “Memories of my audition, the paintings … and that staircase will always be memorable because you walk in and go: ‘Oh my God, I’m at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art!’ It’s very evocative.”
Harewood, 58, is the first person of colour to lead Rada, and he follows in the footsteps of such luminaries as Kenneth Branagh, Richard Attenborough, Princess Diana and John Gielgud. It is the most prestigious of acting schools – some would say the...

The Indian advertising industry is one of the biggest industries in the world, given the sheer consumer volume and the diversity of the consumer groups across the country. While the current ecosystem of advertising encompasses digital, broadcast, radio, print, and outdoors, it was the year 1974 that proved pivotal in shaping the landscape of advertising in India.
It was the year when the Liril advertisement, featuring Air India stewardess Karen Lunel, came out, and it forever changed how Indians engaged with the medium.
The advertisement film showed a bikini-clad Karen enjoying nature as she bathed under a waterfall.
The advertisement, which was shot at the Pambar Falls in Kodaikanal, was created by Lintas (Lever International Advertising Services) advertising agency.
The agency was headed by Alyque Padamsee, who is known for portraying Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Richard Attenborough’s multiple Oscar-winning film ‘Gandhi’.

Hollywood studios have long made a point of promoting tentpole movies at the Cannes Film Festival, using the Cote d’Azur location to highlight their A-list titles with splashy promotional campaigns.
A similar, if less flashy, version of the big Cannes launch took place Tuesday for The Americas, the long-awaited premium wildlife documentary series from BBC and NBCUniversal. Producers of the series, narrated by Tom Hanks, revealed how their team used cutting-edge technology to take viewers inside the lives of critters from across the continent.
The footage, screened at international television confab MIPTV, showed extraordinary sights, including a bear making a treacherous half-mile descent down a crumbling cliff face, with two cubs clinging to her for life, images captured by a drone camera.

Three times a charm for Robert Downey Jr. who finally won an Oscar on this third nomination tonight for his turn as Lewis Strauss, the hostile United States Atomic Energy Commissioner in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Ever the wonderful wisenheimer, Downey Jr, beamed, “I’d like to thank my terrible childood and the Academy — in that order.”
Giving a big shoutout to his producer wife, Susan Downey, err “veterinarian,” the Iron Man thespian heralded, “She found me as a snarling rescue pet and loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here, thank you.”
From the minute Universal’s Oppenheimer hit the screen back in July, buzz for Downey Jr.’s nuanced, complicated turn as the foe to J. Robert Oppenheimer has been on the lips of several awards journalists and members.

As “Oppenheimer” begins its expected steamroll” of many of the biggest categories at the 96th Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. has added yet another storybook ending to one of the greatest comebacks in modern Hollywood history. Downey has won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” beating out stiff competition including Robert De Niro for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” and his Barbenheimer counterpart Ryan Gosling for “Barbie.”
This marks Downey’s first Oscar win on his third nomination. He earned rave reviews in 1992 for playing Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s “Chaplin,” which saw him portraying the silent film icon from his impoverished youth to his later years as a global superstar. That performance earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

There’s just something inherently creepy about dolls, and filmmakers have had a lot of fun over the decades crafting horror stories around that creepiness. Audiences clearly love to see it, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many creepy / killer doll movies out there. Just last year, M3GAN was such a hit that a sequel was put on the fast track, while another killer doll (or killer teddy bear) movie, Imaginary, is in theatres now. So to celebrate this sub-genre, we decided to put together a list of some of the all-time best killer dolls. Not killer doll movies, but specific dolls. Here is our list of the Top 10 Killer Dolls!

30 years ago, "Schindler's List" earned Steven Spielberg his first Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. It was a long-delayed coronation, one that was contingent on the director putting away childish things and making a serious movie for grown-ups. Spielberg was obviously deserving, but these should've been Oscars number five and six after "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial".
Though the Academy never showed Spielberg the love for his escapist classics, John Williams certainly made out well. He won Best Original Score for "Jaws" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" before taking home his fifth overall Oscar for "Schindler's List" -- which was as daunting of a challenge for Williams as it was for Spielberg (who credits the film with restoring his faith in filmmaking). Williams's music had always been an integral component of Spielberg's movies, but he'd never composed anything this somber for the director. In fact,...

Tony Stark and Charlie Chaplin stand as two of Robert Downey Jr.’s most iconic performances. And while Rdj may have expressed relief that Chaplin didn’t nab him an Academy Award, he’s well aware of its special place in his filmography. And he may have an unlikely person to thank for even landing the part – the same person who also passed on Iron Man: Tom Cruise.
In a new Vanity Fair profile, Downey offered his gratitude to Cruise, saying, “I think I’ve got to thank Tom Cruise for a couple of things.” Ahead of being cast in 1992’s Chaplin, Downey recalled meeting with its director, who was far more enamored with Cruise, then fresh off of Days of Thunder. “I went into my agency, and Richard Attenborough was in there. I guess someone had gotten him to take a meeting with me…He held up a picture of Tom Cruise.

The late 1950s and the entirety of the 1960s was the golden age for big, brawny, studio-produced action-adventure epics. Films like "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "The Guns of Navarone," and "The Train" plopped big movie stars in the midst of finely crafted yarns about unflappable heroes pooling their expertise to pull off seemingly impossible tasks. Most of these were next-phase World War II movies that eschewed the reverential tone of the films made in the immediate wake of the conflict's end; they were less about the Axis enemy, and more about the ingenuity of men in high-pressure situations. When done well, they were hailed by critics and ticket-buyers alike.
And with due respect to the many entertaining entries in this subgenre, none of them can match the armrest-shredding suspense and rousing camaraderie of John Sturges "The Great Escape."

BAFTA Awards 2024: Robert Downey Jr Takes Alleged Dig At Marvel For His ‘Dwindling Credibility’ Which Was Saved By Oppenheimer (Picture Credit: Facebook)

After a few years in limbo, the BAFTAs finally found a host to replace the much-missed Stephen Fry in David Tennant. The Doctor Who actor proved an amiable and funny emcee, although much of his humor would have gone way over the non-Brits in the audience, starting with a lengthy filmed skit riffing on his BBC TV series Staged, co-starring Michael Sheen. (You can watch it above.)
It was a night of surprises, not especially pleasant ones for the teams behind Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon, and there were no egregious upsets. Neither were there any of the usual technical nightmares that have plagued the event in the past.
Instead, there were lots of low-key but memorable moments, like Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr., dressed in a gray tail suit to collect his Best Supporting Actor award recalling his life in 30 seconds.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph was similarly charming on accepting her Best Supporting Actress award, swooning over presenter Chiwetel Ejiofor and bringing her Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti to tears when she told him, “I cry every time I see your name.” Equally emotional were June Givanni, receiving this year’s Outstanding Contribution award; Samantha Morton, whose BFI Fellowship was awarded after filmed testimony from Tom Cruise; and the whole audience, who went wild for Still’s Michael J. Fox who handed out the Best Film award to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Wonka star Keegan-Michael Key, presenting, sustained a surprisingly funny attempt to pretend to be British, and, taking the first award of the night for Best Original Screenplay, husband and wife team Justine Triet and Arthur Harari joked that their murderous marital drama Anatomy of a Fall had taken on a life of its own.
All night, speeches were crisp and clean, with only the teams behind The Zone of Interest and 20 Days in Mariupol bringing politics into the conversation, even after Tennant gave the go-ahead by mentioning the recent murder of Alexei Navalny, subject of last year’s Best Documentary winner.
The musical numbers left a lot to be desired. Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed her Saltburn showstopper “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which is more than a few rungs down from Shirley Bassey doing “Diamonds Are Forever” in 2022. Meanwhile, Hannah Waddingham doing a slowed-down version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” wasn’t quite what the particularly touching obituary sequence was crying out for. By far the worst of all, though, was a comedy routine by Nick Mohammed performing as a sweaty light entertainer called Mr. Swallow. We must never think or speak of it again.

Ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine and investment in the UK film sector were among the topics raised by the winners at the 2024 Bafta Film Awards.
The ceremony took place tonight (February 18) at London’s Royal Festival Hall where Oppenheimer led the winners with seven awards.
Bafta fellowship recipient Samantha Morton gave a moving speech, touching upon her experiences in care and how important representation is. “I would tell [my younger self[, homeless and cold, hungry and alone, that you’ll have a family one day and you’ll go beyond what government statistics laid out for you,” Morton said.
Later on, at the winners’ press conference, the actress called for more investment in the UK film industry.

It’s been a star-filled weekend in Santa Barbara, with a dozen of A-listers — including numerous Oscar nominees — making their way to the American Riviera for events at the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
On Friday night, inside the 2,000-seat Arlington Theater, which was sold out, the fest celebrated Robert Downey Jr. with its Maltin Modern Master Award, which is named after the film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Maltin moderated a brisk career retrospective conversation with the Oppenheimer best supporting actor Oscar nominee, who charmed the audience with his self-deprecating humor and imitations of everyone from Richard Attenborough to his late father Robert Downey Sr., prior to Downey’s costar Cillian Murphy presenting him with the award itself.
During the interview, the honoree, 58, reflected on growing up as the son of an independent filmmaker who cast him in a movie, 1970’s Pound, when he was just five. “I think...

Here are two words for those who believe Christopher Nolan can’t possibly lose the Best Director race at this year’s Academy Awards for “Oppenheimer”: Bob Fosse. And here are three more: Francis Ford Coppola.
When you think about how many consider Coppola’s 1972 masterpiece “The Godfather” to be perhaps the greatest American film ever made, it might shock them to learn that while the film won Oscars in ’73 for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Coppola lost the director race to Fosse for “Cabaret.” Nothing against Fosse or his iconic musical, but his win over Coppola was shocking even if deserved. The lesson is that you simply never know what might happen on Oscar night. “Oppenheimer” could clean up, as is being widely predicted, and Nolan could still somehow miss out even though all indicators tell us it’s a done deal.

Everything Jurassic-aged is new again.
While the sequel trilogy to the original Steven Spielberg dino-adventure “Jurassic Park,” based on Michael Crichton’s beloved speed-read novel, concluded with Colin Trevorrow’s “Jurassic World Dominion” in 2022, Universal Pictures has eyes on July 4 weekend in 2025 for another effects-heavy action-thriller. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, “John Wick” and “Bullet Train” director David Leitch will be at the helm.
The new picture will boast a screenplay by writer-director David Koepp, who co-wrote the original with Crichton in 1993 and has a solo writing credit (and second unit director credit) for 1997’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” Koepp got out of the way of rompin’ stompin’ ancient beasts for a while but stayed in the Spielberg orbit with co-writing duties on “War of the Worlds” and the two most recent “Indiana Jones” pictures. Spielberg and his Amblin Entertainment associates like Frank Marshall are all attached as producers to this new one.

Robert Downey Jr has come out of Marvel’s shell and once again proved his mettle as an actor. After receiving the Critics Choice and Golden Globes awards, all eyes are on the 2024 Oscars now for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Production designer Ruth De Jong and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick have worked on projects helmed by incredible filmmakers. De Jong earned an Emmy nomination for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return and worked as the production designer on Jordan Peele’s Us and Nope. Mirojnick, meanwhile, earned an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra — one of her six collaborations with Steven Soderbergh — and designed costumes for Steven Spielberg (Always), Richard Attenborough (Chaplin), Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days), Oliver Stone (Wall Street) and Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers).
So the pair know a thing or two about what makes a great director. But it’s Oppenheimer writer-director Christopher Nolan whom De Jong and Mirojnick call the ultimate filmmaker.
“There is no other director like him, and I’ve worked with some of the best,” says Mirojnick. “His method of collaboration is very generous, and he shares a massive amount by comparison to anyone else.

For many film buffs, the classic Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street is their go-to holiday film. Subsequently, the movie depicts the best and worst of humanity and is essential viewing during the Christmas season. Altogether, the original film has spawned four remakes. However, they’ve all stayed true to the original script.
‘Miracle on 34th Street’ (1947)
The film’s original plot follows Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara), a worker at Macy’s Department Store in New York City. However, Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) realizes the man who will play Santa Claus is drunk. Later, he tells Doris, and she hires Kris to be the Macy’s store Santa Claus.
Her divorce disillusions Doris and her daughter Susan (Natalie Wood). However, their neighbor, lawyer Fred Gaily (John Payne), is surprised Susan doesn’t believe in Santa Claus.
When Susan meets Kris, she believes he’s Santa Claus. Fred believes Kris and clashes with Doris.

1994’s Miracle on 34th Street is filled with magical moments. But some were more enjoyable to film than others for actor Mara Wilson. The former child star, who played young Susan Walker, counted scenes with certain cast members as her favorite. Spoiler: Not Sir Richard Attenborough’s Kriss Kringle. Plus, some behind-the-scenes details about the film.
Wilson loved filming any ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ scenes with Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott
Wilson, who no longer acts, counted her favorite scenes to film in the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie as the ones with two of her cast members. Not Attenborough, or even the reindeer in the courtroom, made the cut. Rather, her movie mom and dad.
“On set, anything that I got to do with Dylan McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins [was my favorite]; they were just lovely,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “In particular, the dinner table scene during Thanksgiving was really fun.

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

Is he really Santa? That’s the question actor Mara Wilson fielded about her co-star, Sir Richard Attenborough, over and over while filming the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street. Wilson’s response, which she later revealed, was to give the “polite” answer.
Sir Richard Attenborough ‘really’ felt ‘like Santa Claus’ to Mara Wilson
Although her character, Susan Walker, didn’t believe in Santa Claus, Wilson herself got Santa vibes from Attenborough. The former child star told Entertainment Weekly that as a child on set, the late actor, who died in 2014 at the age of 90, felt like Santa to her.
Recalling how “lovely” and “fun” Attenborough was to work with, Wilson shared that “he really did feel like Santa Claus” to her.

Ryan O’Neal, the Oscar-nominated Love Story actor who starred in some of the most memorable movies of the 1970s, from What’s Up, Doc? and Paper Moon to Barry Lyndon, died today. He was 82.
His death was announced by son Patrick O’Neal on Instagram. Although a cause was not specified, O’Neal had battled various health issues for decades, from a leukemia diagnosis in 2001 and Stage 4 prostate cancer in 2012.
“So this is the toughest thing I’ve ever had to say but here we go,” wrote Patrick O’Neal, a longtime Los Angeles sportscaster. “My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting him and loving him as he would us.”
“This is just so hard for us,” Patrick continues in the lengthy message. “Ryan made such an impact and this will be difficult without him. This is and will be a huge void in our lives.

Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Past Session. Here’s the trailer.
Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though this role is unlikely to involve fava beans and a nice Chianti. In fact, this time, it looks as though dinner is off the menu entirely.
Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St Germain, itself based on the book The Question Of God by Dr Armand M Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles Of Narnia author Cs Lewis, here played by Matthew Goode, over for a debate about the existence of God.
Sounds like just the kind of fodder that actors love getting their teeth into, and the acclaim for the play itself suggests that it’s no chore for audiences either. The adaptation into a film should build on that,...

Victor J. Kemper, the former president of the American Society of Cinematographers whose career spanned four decades and included films as diverse as Dog Day Afternoon and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, has died according to the ASC. He was 96.
Kemper made films with many of the greats of ’70s cinema, including John Cassavetes, Arthur Hiller, Michael Ritchie, Peter Yates, Sidney Lumet, George Roy Hill, Robert Wise, Carl Reiner, Richard Attenborough and Norman Jewison.
His very first film was Cassavetes’ Husbands, and it was an education in itself.
“We shot more than a million-and-a-half feet of film during 10 weeks in New York and 12 weeks in London,” Kemper recalled. “That’s the way Cassavetes worked.”
He went on to make Mikey & Nicky with the director.
Subsequent work included The Candidate, And Justice for All, Audrey Rose, Slap Shot, Oh God!, The Gambler, The Jerk, The Four Seasons, Coma, Mr. Mom, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,...

There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s darkly comic and voyeuristic exploration of the British aristocracy being released on Friday by Amazon MGM Studios. Despite the hugely impressive efforts of Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant, however, most don’t belong to the lead cast, but to Paul Rhys.
As Duncan, the imperious and terrifying butler, the Welsh actor silently steals scenes from under the toffee noses of both those he dutifully serves at the Saltburn mansion (including Pike, Grant, Jacob Elordi and Alison Oliver) and the lower-class interloper he’s keeping a beady eye on (Barry Keoghan) each time he appears with hilariously po-faced magnificence.
And it’s a face that crops up again in another starry title landing late in the awards season corridor. In Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated biopic Napoleon, out Nov. 22 via Apple Original Films and Sony Pictures, Rhys plays Talleyrand, the crafty...

Opening with a scene featuring a homeless guy seemingly psychically willed to upchuck his own intestines by a skull-faced silent killer, it’s safe to say American Terror Tales 2 gets off to an auspicious start. What follows is an anthology that features three unconnected stories in a film that touches upon some genre stand-bys, delivering some grisly, gory fearful fun.
The opener House of Profane (not to be confused with the long-gestating The Profane Exhibit) continues on from that opener and tells the story of a group of “teens” who decide to put each other to the test by spending the night in a house owned by someone called Skullface. Now I wouldn’t want...

Certain stories are worth adapting more than once. Such is the case for Mark McShane’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon. The two notable, not to mention distinct interpretations of this 1961 novel each capture a disquieting tale of an overzealous medium, and her plan to become esteemed and famous. Although one film follows the text more closely, the other takes creative license by underscoring the novel’s ambiguous supernatural element.
While McShane’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon was published years after spiritualism peaked in 19th century England, there was still a niche interest in clairvoyance, mesmerism and the like. As seen in Bryan Forbes’ ‘64 film, plenty of people seek out folks like Myra Savage; specifically those who stand between this world and the next. Or so they claim. Yet for Myra, she craves more than local repute. No, the protagonist of Séance on a Wet Afternoon wants everyone to know her name.
