Many know actor/musician Jeff Daniels for his roles in classic ‘90s films like “Speed” and “Dumb and Dumber,” as well as his Emmy-winning performance as Will McAvoy in the Aaron Sorkin HBO series “The Newsroom.” However, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels says he received the greatest camera-acting education during his collaboration with Clint Eastwood on the 2002 mystery thriller “Blood Work.”
Eastwood, notorious for shooting very few takes, if not only one, made Daniels realize preparation and spontaneity are key.
“I do not sit around with casts on any project and talk about our collective journey. I love to make it happen in front of the camera for the first time in take one,” Daniels said. “In Clint Eastwood movies, that’s where I learned it. You get one take, and then Clint’s moving the camera. So that’s where you learn to hit it on one.

Is cinema really gendered? Well, we would like to say no, but reality says otherwise. Although all movies can be enjoyed by both men and women, there are some that are more obviously made for each group.
For example, we know that silly romantic comedies are mostly watched by female audiences looking for love adventures, and hardcore action thrillers are mostly watched by men. But lately, there have been too many movies made for male audiences, and it seems that the creators have forgotten what a perfect male movie should be like.
We're tired of all the modern clichés that famous action actors like Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone bring to the genre, so let's take a look back and talk about these 5 real old manly dramas.
1. The Mechanic (1972)

The legend of Quentin Tarantino is a well-established tale in the annals of cinematic history. When he broke out in the industry, the director’s prowess and unbridled power over creativity and storytelling had been unparalleled since the era of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and the like.

It was only fair to allow the once-in-a-generation talent to bloom beyond the supervising thumb of studio overlords, whose concerns extended only so far as MPAA ratings and budgetary constraints. Given the stylistic choice of filmmaking that Tarantino would become famous for, scoring a suitable rating would only be the first of many problems faced by Hollywood’s studios.

There are only a few people whose influence on the movie industry can hardly be overestimated. One of them is undoubtedly Clint Eastwood. Over the course of his career, he has managed to become one of the most popular western actors, playing tough heroes.
But westerns are not the only thing he managed to become famous for, in fact all his appearances in different genre movies became iconic and you can never get enough of them. However, there are some films that we like to watch again and again, that’s how brilliant Eastwood is in them.
1. Unforgiven (1992)
This is the movie that brought Eastwood his acclaim as a director. Unforgiven earned Eastwood the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director that he had long deserved.
For the film, Eastwood cast himself as Will Munny, a rather ruthless former gunslinger. The movie is a deeply disturbing revisionist western that...

When Eddie Murphy broke out on Saturday Night Live and made his transition to the big screen, a lot of doors opened for him. The paychecks got higher, the popularity went widespread and a lot of Hollywood elite wanted to dine with him. Oddly enough, some of them didn’t have the kindest words about the profession Murphy chose, namely perhaps the greatest actor of them all, Marlon Brando.
In the wake of 48 Hrs., Eddie Murphy got wind that none other than Marlon Brando wanted to have dinner with him. Sure, Brando was on a hiatus and wouldn’t be making another movie until the tail end of the ‘80s, but that’s still a huge get. After one initial dinner, the two ended up hanging out at his famed Mulholland Drive residence, where Murphy couldn’t help but heap praise on his host. As he said on The New York Times’ Interview podcast,...

Regardless of its importance to the storytelling process, film music is too often an afterthought. There are a variety of theories that composers have as to why, and they’re mostly related to a lack of education. So I’ve decided to take an active stance in educating filmmakers about the role of music in film and the process of how a film score comes into being.
My hope is that by the end of this piece you’ll be more familiar with: A) the history of film music in general, and B) the key composers who have contributed to the development of film music as an art. So—where did this all start?
The Silent Era (1890s-1929) Silent film star Mary Pickford. Somewhere, a pianist is inspired.
During the silent era, films music is provided by each individual theater, either by phonograph or as performed live by flesh-and-blood musicians.

The Western genre was at the peak of its popularity during the 1950s and 1960s, with iconic stars like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood dominating the silver screen. These titans of the Old West rode tall in the saddle, their rugged individualism and stoic determination captivating audiences worldwide. The genre’s heyday saw the release of classics like The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, cementing the Western’s place as a staple of American cinema. However, by the 1980s and 1990s, the genre began to wane in popularity, with audiences increasingly flocking...

Eddie Murphy revealed on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast that Marlon Brando told him that “acting is bullshit, when Murphy’s star profile was on the rise in the wake of “48 Hrs.” Murphy was a known comedian at the time thanks to his stint on “Saturday Night Live,” but “48 Hrs.” was his first movie role and started his ascent as a film star. “Trading Places” and “Beverly Hills Cop” followed and cemented his status.
“I was having these famous people that I grew up watching on television wanting to have a meal with me,” Murphy remembered about becoming famous in Hollywood. “After ’48 Hrs.’ Marlon Brando calls my agent and wants to meet me. Now I look back and go, ‘Wow, that’s crazy: The greatest actor of all time wants to have dinner with you!’ But back then I just thought, ‘Well, that’s the way...

There is perhaps no genre more American than the Western. Stories of cowboys and the Wild West have captured the screen since the dawn of cinema. The Western has been buried dozens of times in its century-long existence, but each time it has pulled itself out, desperately refusing to die.
Horizon is Kevin Costner's Dream Project
At the end of the last century, we almost witnessed the final death of the genre, but first Kevin Costner's Dances With Wolves and then Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven revived the genre not only for the viewers, but also for the Academy – Dances With Wolves won seven Oscars and Unforgiven won four.
Both Costner and Eastwood, the main cowboys of modern cinema, are still in business. And while the latter is hard at work on his latest film, the former has completed his dream project for which he left one of the most popular series of recent years,...

Eddie Murphy may have just been born uber-confident. From a young age, he knew was gonna make it and, indeed, by just 19, he was already a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” From there, he would go on to star in comedy hits like “48 Hrs.” and “Trading Places,” which is when he started receiving recognition from his fellow thespians. A recognition he says in a recent interview with The New York Times, he didn’t quite appreciate it at the time.
“I started at maybe around 13, 14, saying that I was going to be famous,” Murphy said. “I’d tell my mother, ‘When I’m famous…’ So when I got famous, it was like, ‘See, I told you.’ I was having these famous people that I grew up watching on television wanting to have a meal with me. After ‘48 Hrs.’ Marlon Brando calls my agent and wants to meet me.

George Roy Hill's "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" arrived at a moment when the Western, the most American of movie genres, was being appropriated by Italian filmmakers and Hollywood-bred revisionists like Sam Peckinpah and Clint Eastwood. Baby Boomer moviegoers were rejecting the old-fashioned white hat/black hat simplicity of their parents' unquestioning era, and finding resonance in the violent, unsentimental depiction of a manifest destiny recklessly pursued and ruthlessly realized. Tonally and thematically, the new Westerns jibed with their counterculture sensibilities.
While "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" wasn't overtly political, it did appeal to the counterculture audience by teaming one of Hollywood's hottest movie stars in Paul Newman with a ready-to-explode Robert Redford as a couple of carefree outlaws. Hill wisely embraced the aesthetic freedom of the burgeoning New Hollywood revolution, and played directly to his target audience's authority-and convention-flouting tastes. He screwed around with camera placement,...

Few actors have transcended film culture like Kevin Costner. The actor remains one of the best performers of athletic prowess on screen. He also became a mainstay of the Western, eventually transitioning that talent to Yellowstone. The popular TV series provided enough steam for Costner to return to the director’s chair, building an epic series he’s been trying to make for years. With Horizon: An American Saga debuting its first part on June 28th, we revisited the icon’s filmography to highlight his best movies.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive, it has been Kevin Costner. Ok, well Clint Eastwood too.
And that has been true right from the beginning of Costner’s career, when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985. He also made an impression as the title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Best Picture Oscar-winning 1990 pic Dances with Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. For the past few seasons he...

“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”
If any eight words could sum up the best Western movies in their entirety, it’s those from “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” At times misunderstood, at times marginalized, at times written off by Hollywood as less than bankable even following periods of extraordinary success, the Western is nonetheless the most enduring genre in the history of American movies. Assembling IndieWire’s list of the 100 Greatest Westerns of All Time resulted in movies appearing there that represent every single decade since the turn of the last century: The earliest film on the list is from 1903 and the most recent from 2023, with movies from five continents represented.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin Entertainment are behind some of the most popular family movies of all time. One of the more underrated offerings from the acclaimed filmmaker’s production house is the 1995 supernatural comedy film Casper, starring Bill Pullman as Dr. James Harvey.

The film follows Harvey, a widower, and a ghost therapist as his daughter befriends the titular ghost. It is known for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery, more notably being the first film to have a full CG main lead. During an interview, Pullman reflected on what the film’s ambitious CGI meant for him, recalling an incident where Spielberg warned him of the consequences of messing up a scene.

There are plenty of great Clint Eastwood movie moments in "Escape from Alcatraz," but it's not just the veteran star that made this a legendary prison break thriller. Directed by Don Siegel, the film was an adaptation of J. Campbell Bruce's 1963 non-fiction book of the same name, which chronicled the real-life June 1962 Alcatraz escape attempt. "Escape" also marked the fifth and final collaboration between the Siegel and Eastwood, and it's a fitting end to their fruitful working relationship. Still regarded as one of the finest films of the 1970s, "Escape" was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its 1979 release and its reputation hasn't faltered since.
Aside from the tight direction and excellent lead performance, the film also features stellar supporting performances from the likes of Patrick McGoohan, Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, and Larry Hankin. What's more, it marked the film debut of Danny Glover, who of course went on...

As Albus Dumbledore once said, “It does not do well to dwell on dreams…”. However, for many Harry Potter fans, the dream of a reboot of the beloved film franchise is one that they just can’t shake. Since the conclusion of the eight-movie series in 2011, speculation about a potential return to the wizarding world has been a hot topic of discussion. And really, who could blame them?

I think about an anecdote that Clint Eastwood once told regarding Chief Dan George. Clint campaigned for an Oscar nomination for George’s excellent performance in “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” A common reply from voters was, “Well, he wasn’t acting. He was just being himself.”
In late October 2019, Sterlin Harjo first mentioned “Reservation Dogs” to me. Sterlin told me that he and Taika Waititi were developing a TV show for FX — and if a miracle happened (God willin’ and the creek don’t rise) and the show got made, he wanted me to be a part of it. Well, that miracle — or more accurately, a series of miracles — happened. With the help of Angelique Midthunder, Sterlin and Taika cast four young Native actors to play the Rez Dogs, four more to play their rivals (The Bad Guy Gang) and dozens more Native actors to populate their fictional community. Legendary actor Donald Sutherland just passed away at the age of 88. Younger fans probably know him best for playing the villainous President Snow in the Hunger Games movies, or perhaps for voicing Hollis Hurlbut in that one episode of The Simpsons.
Older audiences, on the other hand, grew up watching Sutherland in classic movies like M*A*S*H, Don’t Look Now and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although his greatest work, hands down, was this vintage Canadian tourism commercial in which he tells a joke about a salmon fisherman on his wedding day.
Sutherland also starred in one of the most profitable movie comedies of all-time: National Lampoon’s Animal House.
Sutherland played the highly-inappropriate Professor Jennings (who somehow still isn’t the most questionable element of the movie). This may have seemed like an odd role for the actor at the time, but Sutherland only took the gig...

He was initially an ambassador from the Hippie Nation, a force of irreverence armed with a sharp wit and a what-me-worry smile. Which is why, in the late 1960s, right when Flower Power was beginning to bloom in full and the escalating situation in Vietnam galvanized the youth generation, Donald Sutherland started to make a name for himself in… war movies. It’s funny to think of that factoid now, given the six decades of incredibly versatile work the late, great actor left behind when he died Thursday at the...

Legendary Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, who died on Thursday after a long illness and a celebrated Hollywood film and TV career, revealed why he never sought dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship by acquiring an American passport.
“Because we don’t have the same sense of humor. It’s true. We don’t. I’m a Canadian through and through,” Sutherland told the CBC radio show Q with Tom Power in March during one of his last media interviews.
Sutherland, who had been living in recent years in Quebec, around 12 miles from the U.S. border, recalled giving that answer to an American border guard who asked why the Canadian actor, who already had a green card to work stateside, didn’t get an American passport to more quickly cross the border to complete errands.

We're very sad to report that Donald Sutherland has passed away at the age of 88 after a long illness.
Sutherland appeared in countless movies and TV shows over the course of his six-decade career, taking on a wide range of roles. Early standouts include Pvt. Vernon Pinkley in The Dirty Dozen (1967), Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in M*A*S*H (1970), hippie tank commander Sgt. Oddball in Kelly’s Heroes (1970), and the titular private eye in Alan J. Pakula’s Klute (1971).
Though he often played heroic characters, Sutherland also brought life to his share of villains, including a ruthless Nazi spy in Eye of the Needle (1981), and President Snow in the Hunger Games movies. He is also known for his devastating turn as a grieving father in Nicholas Roeg's sinister horror/thriller Don't Look Now (1973), which featured an infamously graphic (for its time) sex scene with Julie Christie.
The prolific actor's résumé also includes:...

Donald Sutherland, the tall, lean and long-faced Canadian actor who became a countercultural icon with such films as “The Dirty Dozen,” “Mash,” “Klute” and “Don’t Look Now,” and who subsequently enjoyed a prolific and wide-ranging career in films including “Ordinary People,” “Without Limits” and the “Hunger Games” films, died Thursday in Miami after a long illness, CAA confirmed. He was 88.
For over a half century, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor, who received an honorary Oscar in 2017, memorably played villains, antiheroes, romantic leads and mentor figures. His profile increased in the past decade with his supporting role as the evil President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.
Most recently, he appeared as Judge Parker on the series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” and in the “Swimming With Sharks” series in 2022. His other recent recurring roles include the series “Undoing” and “Trust,” in which he played J. Paul Getty, and features “Ad Astra” and “The Burnt-Orange Heresy.

Have you ever witnessed the transformative power of true acting prowess married with masterful direction? In the movie industry, Clint Eastwood’s real genius as a filmmaker crystallized in moments such as trusting the indomitable Richard Harris with his evocative vision in the 1992 Western flick, Unforgiven.
This is especially evident in the scene-stealing role of English Bob—an arrogant, pseudo-aristocratic gunslinger who is anything but what he seems. Harris, widely celebrated for his gravitas as Albus Dumbledore in the early Harry Potter flicks, went down the rabbit hole by delving deep into historical complexities to flesh out his character’s (in Unforgiven) deceptive nature.

Eastwood’s count on Harris’ interpretation added a rich layer of authenticity to Unforgiven, a film that not only challenged the traditional tropes of Westerns but also reflected on the fables we cherish about our heroes & their legacies.

There are many things in this weird and wonderful world that go together perfectly; mac and cheese, bacon and eggs, beer and curry, Pegg and Frost, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Affleck and Lopez. Ok, there are some things that go well together. However, there are two popular worlds that are a huge part of this particular writer’s life, that get on together like a house on fire; rock music and horror movies. Both genres embody everything that’s good about their respective industries and over time there have been many collaborations between the two worlds. Various rockers have lent either their musical, or acting, talents to the movie world and horror in particular, including the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Henry Rollins and David Bowie. What we’re going to focus on primarily is a collaboration between one of the most prominent British rock stars of all time, Lemmy Kilmister,...

Exclusive: Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl) are in final negotiations to join Netflix’s new film from Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, according to multiple sources.
No word on the roles they’ll be playing, but they join an ensemble that will be led by Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, as previously reported. The film’s title and plot remain under wraps, though sources have told Deadline that it will be set at the White House as a national crisis unfolds.
The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 thriller Detroit, an awards contender produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures, which starred John Boyega, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever and more. News of the film was first divulged by Netflix recently during its Upfront presentation in New York, which also saw them spotlight upcoming films including Happy Gilmore 2 and the thriller The Woman in Cabin 10 starring Keira Knightley.

Anime is more than just a niche in the United States now and Hollywood is taking notice — Netflix especially. The streamer has both produced English-language anime movie/TV adaptations in-house and imported shows made in Japan for international distribution (such as the live-action "Fullmetal Alchemist" trilogy). One can only wonder which anime Netflix will see fit to adapt next — and whether fans should see that as a promise or a threat.
In the meantime, one of Netflix's most recent imports won't convince it to slow down on live-action anime. 2024's "Golden Kamuy," which premiered in Japanese theaters this past January, was added to Netflix on May 19, 2024. The film is an adaptation of a manga by Satoru Noda, which was previously adapted as an anime in 2018. The "Golden Kamuy" manga is complete (it ran for 314 chapters from 2015 to 2022), while the anime still has a fifth and final season on the horizon adapting the manga's last chapters.

Tom Hanks is the ultimate ‘good guy’ of Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner has made a career out of playing morally decent leading men who do the right thing during a stressful situation. He has worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, and Baz Luhrmann.
Hanks received one of his numerous Oscar nominations for the role of Captain John Miller in Spielberg’s WWII drama Saving Private Ryan. The film followed a group of US soldiers tasked with retrieving a private whose brothers have been killed in action. When Hanks was offered the role, the actor was reportedly surprised by the filmmaker’s choice.

Everyone who isn’t into Westerns can guess that the genre’s main stars are Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, whose classics paved the way for all modern Western flicks and heroes. However, there are also a number of outstanding actors who belong there.
These include Robert Redford, the industry veteran who is also a great Western actor. Genre lovers may have seen his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) or The Electric Horseman (1979), but there is one Western starring Redford that beats them all.
The movie’s plot revolves around a Mexican-American War veteran, who decides to live in isolation in the mountains. Luckily, he finds help from a mountain man who teaches him how to survive there, as well as a native bride and an adopted son to live together.

Be it as an actor or a filmmaker, in fans’ eyes, Taylor Sheridan has perfectly nailed it in nearly every single field. While the virtuoso acting chops he displayed in projects like Sons of Anarchy is one thing, the blockbuster series and projects he helmed, like Yellowstone, Hell or High Water, and Tulsa King further add even more stars to his already star-studded domain.

However, while he has immaculately succeeded in all of these projects, the mastermind filmmaker feels he hasn’t exactly excelled in one particular field: Business. In fact, if anything, despite ruling the world of modern television and even co-owning and running an iconic historic ranch, Sheridan seems to have accepted defeat in this particular aspect of his life and career.
