- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsIan McKellenMartin FreemanRichard ArmitageBilbo Baggins and company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness.A decent enough conclusion to the trilogy. Not much more to say about it.
- DirectorAllan KingStarsBernard BradenOrson WellesA vintage interview captures the artist reflecting on Citizen Kane and expounding on directing, acting and writing and his desire to bestow a valuable legacy upon his profession. The scene is a hotel room in Paris. The year 1960. The star, Orson Welles. This is a pearl of cinematic memorabilia.
- DirectorKevin SmithStarsJustin LongMichael ParksHaley Joel OsmentA brash and arrogant podcaster gets more than he bargained for when he travels to Canada to interview a mysterious recluse... who has a rather disturbing fondness for walruses."So I watched Tusk today for some reason. It is a weirdass film. Kevin Smith...made a body horror movie. The thing is though, he made a body horror film starring Kevin Smith characters, so tonally this thing is all over the place. Michael Parks kidnaps Justin Long and turns him into a *beep* up walrus...thing.
Johnny Depp is in this film for some reason too, playing what is essentially a less compelling Quebecian version of Christoph Waltz' performance from Django Unchained. It's very odd, and his section of the movie kind of feels like Smith poorly aping Tarantino.
In fact in general I have no idea what Smith is doing as a director here. There's a scene where Genesis Rodriguez (Who's utterly gorgeous btw and her time in her underwear is the highlight of the film) is talking into the camera about how she hates that Justin Long is cheating on her, and how she's thankful that who she is talking to is there for her. We see a hand reach down and rub her face as we find out this is a POV shot. We see a similar shot a few minutes later, as the identity of the guy isn't yet revealed. It turns out later on that the guy is literally the only other male character we've seen that already knew not only Justin Long, but also the only other male character that already knew Genesis as well.
Why hide his identity for several minutes? Who else would it possibly be? Why even reveal, and not just leave the relationship between the two characters as subtext?
This film is obviously an attempt by Smith to move away from Jay and Silent Bob type stuff, but it doesn't work because Smith himself isn't away from that. That's why when characters reference Ernest Hemingway and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner of all things it comes as a bit disingenuous.
I appreciate the effort Smith is making here, but he's so far behind his contemporaries from the 90's independent boom. I won't say this movie was a waste of time for me, and the bizarre walrus suit was neat, but it could have been more. The ending is also dumb. 5/10."
"Last thing I'll say about Tusk is that it is the kind of experimentation that Smith really should have been trying back in the 90's. There's ideas he's clearly trying to explore here (Long-as-Walrus is contrasted against a YouTube kid that injured himself imitating a stunt out of Kill Bill, only later to commit suicide), but the tone is just all over the place.
I'm not sure Smith gets how to reference things in a subtle way. There's another scene where a character does the "shade a pad of paper to find what was written on a torn off sheet" thing, and a character says "It's just like The Big Lebowski!". Depp responds with a line like "Funny you mention it, because I learned that trick from that film!". Why? Why is this dialogue here? At least when Clerks referenced Star Wars, there was sort of a point being made about how changing your perspective can change how you look at things." - DirectorYoshihiro UedaStarsMasako NozawaRyô HorikawaTôru FuruyaGoku and his family and friends encounter Vegeta's brother, and a threat from Vegeta's past shows up and causes trouble.Pretty solid revival of the Dragon Ball franchise that would eventually lead to Battle of Gods. I liked all of the Gotenks shenanigans, and it's interesting how this and BoG kept setting up Frieza's eventual return.
- DirectorYoshihiro UedaStarsKenji AkabaneTakahiro FujimotoToshio FurukawaDr. Lychee may be the last of the Tuffle people, a race that was completely wiped some time ago by the Saiyans. He now plans to take revenge on the remaining Saiyans, Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and Gohan. He creates a machine that will emit Destron, a gas that could destroy all life on Earth. The Saiyans, plus Piccolo, only have 72 hours to destroy these machines and find Dr. Lychee. When trying to destroy the final machine, Vegeta discovers that it is protected by an impenetrable energy barrier. Frieza, Cooler, Turles and Lord Slug appear and engage the heroes one on one. The heroes continue to lose against their foes. It is revealed that these ghost warriors are made of Destron gas and cannot be beaten unless the gas is neutralized. The barrier is destroyed by Bulma, who also came with the antidote for the Destron gas. She then manages to stop the gas. The heroes kill Frieza and the others. The heroes track down Dr. Lychee on the Dark Planet and engage him, discovering that his ghost warriors are generated by a machine called Hatchiyack, a device powered by the Tuffles' hatred for the Saiyans. It is also revealed that Dr. Lychee is a ghost warrior himself, generated by Hatchiyack. When Vegeta vaporizes Lychee, preventing him from re-materializing, the hate of the last remaining Tuffle causes Hatchiyack to exceed its limit. Hatchiyack appears in a powerful android body, whose power is said to match or perhaps even exceed that of Broly, according to Goku. Hatchiyack devastates the heroes until the Saiyans (after having transformed into their Super Saiyan states) and Piccolo combine their powers together into one massive wave of energy, ending the threat of the Dr. Lychee. At last Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks and Piccolo return to Earth just as the Dark Planet explodes.
