Widowed Dayashankar is a businessman who lives in Madras with his two school-going sons, Raj and Ashok. One day he catches Raj stealing some money from his vault, he beats him, locks him in a room, and threatens to cut off his fingers. A terrified Raj breaks the window and runs away, never to be heard of again. Ashok goes on to take over his dad's business, Superior Motors, which also has a branch in Bombay; gets married to Laxmi, and soon has son named Munna. One day Ashok must travel to Bombay to meet with Bulbul, the Branch Manager, to discuss business. Laxmi and Munna see him off. Then several days later, Ashok returns home and he is not the same loving husband and father anymore. He decides to sell the business, has nothing to do with Munna and Laxmi, and asks them to take some money, while he returns to Bombay. Laxmi and Munna follow him to Bombay, but are unable to locate him. They are befriended by a petty thief and pickpocket by the name of Raja, who lives with a young street dancer named Rani and her dad, Baba. When Baba finds out that Laxmi may be related to Raja and that Munna may be their child, he asks them to leave the house. Raja then takes them to Ashok, and to Laxmi's shock she finds her once-loving husband living with another woman, much younger and prettier, by the name of Sangita. Watch what happens when Sangita asks Laxmi to be the maidservant, and Ashok refuses to recognize his wife and child.

The only son of the Royal Astrologer, Narsin (Om Prakash) namely Gopal (Bharat Bhushan) is not interested in astrology but in music and songs, much to the dismay of Narsin. Gopal's talents are well-known and he could become the Emperor's Chief Musician if he wins in the contest. His rivals live next door, and in order to win the approval of the emperor (Chandrashekhar), they poison Gopal's drink, and Gopal loses his voice completely. His mom (Leela Chitnis) is sorry at the loss of his voice. A young dancing girl, Gopi (Nimmi) takes interest in Gopal, and through her help and a hard knock on the head, he recovers his voice. But Gopal's challenges are far from over, and he will be called upon to prove his worth, as well as his association with Gopi.

When their mother dies, a brother and sister are left orphaned. Having sold all their possessions to settle debts they also become homeless and destitute. They set out to find a better life, away from their painful memories. Taking shelter in a remote temple, they encounter an ascetic holy man who allows them to stay there. With the spiritual help of the ascetic and the monetary assistance of an unhappy dancer, the boy's indomitable spirit and indefatigable energy enable the pair to overcome a series of setbacks including the loss of the girl's sight and the sickness of her fiancé. Such is the example set by the boy that both the dancer and the ascetic feel their lives have been enriched by knowing him.

Chand (Kishore Kumar), an aspiring lyricist and singer, goes to a dance show and sees Mala (Meena Kumari) performing and is overwhelmed with Meena Kumari's performance as a dancer and decides that if she can get Mala to dance to his songs, it will be a winning combination. However, the owner of the company that Mala dances for is skeptical to the proposition. Before anything happens, Chand's father vehemently opposes the idea and Chand, totally disappointed and frustrated, leaves home and moves to Bombay to try his musical talent. He takes his friend Karim (Johnny Walker) and his girlfriend Raina (Kum Kum) with him and puts up with his garage-owner friend in the city. They start doing shows and come to attention of Mala who eventually asks her owner Ashok Babu (Pran) to hire Chand to sing songs with Mala dancing. When the money gets stolen, Mohan kills himself. A guilt-ridden Roshan travels to Madhopur, pays off their debt, and returns home without telling anyone about Mohan's demise. Madhopur Police subsequently find out that the money was stolen from Universal Bank and start an investigation. Roshan is faced with another challenge when Shukal and Manglu Mama come to the city to meet Mohan, and Roshan and Shukal fall in love with each other. To complicate their romance, a cabaret dancer, Rita, pretends to fall in love with Roshan and moves in with him and his mother while the Police close in on Roshan, threatening to expose him as a thief in his mother's and everyone's eyes.

A girl of the upper-class family marries a poor man on the contract to gain her family wealth.

Baijnath alias Baiju is a slacker, trouble-maker, unemployed, and a flirt. The villagers rally together and force his father to ask him to leave the village, which Baiju does. Baiju's travels take him to the castle of a king, who has a beautiful daughter named Ratnavali. When he sees Ratnavali, he is smitten by her beauty and falls head over heels in love with her. He parks himself opposite her room, and awaits the time when she will make a presence on the balcony, so that he can get an eyeful of her beautiful self. This enrages the King, and he orders his men to thoroughly beat up Baiju and throw him in the sea, which they do. But Baiju survives, recovers, and gets back to wooing the beautiful Ratnavali. This time the King challenges Baiju to accumulate ten lakh rupees in three months, and he will then give his consent to marrying Ratnavali. The King further adds that if Baiju fails, he will be hanged. Baiju accepts the challenge, and brags that he can accumulate not ten lakhs, but fifteen lakhs within that time period. With no survival nor job skills, and no one to even loan him the fifteen lakh rupees, how is Baiju going to escape from the death-trap that the King has prepared for him?

A joint family consisting of four brothers, their wives, and their respective children, living under one roof. Some of the brothers are professionls, one a lawyer, a doctor, and others businessmen. They are a happy family, living and sharing each other's joys and sorrows. "Heer" is the story of two lovers, after the mythical Punjabi legend of Heer and Ranjhna. It tells their thwarted love, and how beautiful Heer and intrepid Ranjhna must fight to reunite in spite of obstacles and enemies. The two lovers belong to opposing tribes/families and villains are out to separate them. During a fair where her champion has been tricked, Heer is promised to somebody of her clan. The defeated hero wonders in the wilderness and meets with witches who direct him to his beloved. In spite of having fallen from princehood to beggarhood, he thus gets back to her, and they hope to marry, but Ranjhna's enemies are still looking for him, and they stalk him. A trap is laid to capture Ranjhna and to stop any further common plan, Heer is married to her rightful suitor. She plans suicide, but Ranjhna arrives; he tries to drag her away, but he's seen in her apartments and therefore she's declared impure and is condemned to the dungeons. The marriage takes place, in spite of Heer's will. Time passes; Ranjhna the wanderer has become a yogi and winds his way again to Heer's home. She's almost dead, but when she hears of him, she rises and meets him. But she's been too long deprived of him and has lost her mind: she doesn't recognize him. Shocked, she lies down to die. A plan is organized to join the star-crossed lovers: Ranjhna declares he must take Heer to his hermitage in order to pray and revive her. The plan works thanks to a sister in law: Ranjhna prays and Heer resurrects. But again the pair's enemies catch them, and once more they are separated, and brought in front of the judge, who gives Heer to her lawful husband. She is dragged out, but during her convoy, her own prayer brings fire down on the city, and this proves to the King that she was wrongfully married. Alas, this won't prove good, and Heer's relatives rig another plan to doom her and her lover. She is told to sacrifice herself to save her father, whose house is attacked by a mob of angry and manipulated villagers. This time Ranjhna arrives too late, and can only hold in his arms the poisoned heroine.

Rajguru (Sohrab Modi) decides that Jhansi should get its proper recognition in history. He comes across a young girl Manu (the young Rani Lakshmibai) played by Baby Shikha. Her father has been hit by a carriage driven by an English driver. She gathers a few children to confront the driver. This and her confrontation with an elephant impresses the Rajguru who takes her in hand, shaping her into becoming a determined leader. He arranges for her, at the age of nine, to marry the much-older ruler of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao (Mubarak), who is about fifty years, and become Queen. Manu grows up under the expert tutelage of the Rajguru, learning physical combat and political administration. The older Manu now called Lakshmibai gives birth to a boy who dies. She adopts another boy Damodar Rao who the English refuse to accept as the rightful heir. This further sets her against the British. During the uprising of 1857 (1857 Mutiny) she fights against them succumbing to her injuries in the end.
