Official British reporter of World War I. When the British War Office decided to "manage" coverage of the war--partly motivated, many correspondents believed, by Gibbs' often vivid descriptions of the horrors of trench warfare on the front in France--by restricting correspondents' access to it. Gibbs refused to abide by those restrictions and was ordered to return to Britain. He refused that, too, and was promptly arrested and deported by British military authorities.
