- The news of the Franco's death has a special resonance in the family formed by Florentina, her daughter Encarna, her son Hilario, and the children of the marriage, Juanita and Manolín. At the same time, Florentina informs the family of a much more important announcement than the dictator's death: her husband Emiliano, who had been given up for dead in the Spanish civil war, is alive. During Franco's regime he has been hidden in the family home itself.

- In 1939, in a French prison camp, José Garcés of the defeated Spanish Republican army raises the spirits of his fellow prisoners by telling the story of the year he was 8 years old, 1911, in a small town in northeastern Spain. He was a rascal, baffling his father, always in trouble, and in love with Valentina, a neighbor girl. On his roof top at night he sends semaphore messages to her. He writes poems. He gets them into trouble, killing her father's breeding pigeons. When the two families camp at a decaying castle, his tutor, a sympathetic priest, tells him about the most valiant men, the saints, the heroes, and the poets. Already a poet, he learns a lesson about being a hero.
- Alicia, a young disabled woman, enters a modern clinic where they use innovative techniques that promise to recover patients' mobility. At the clinic she meets Daniel, a young man who became blind after witnessing his fiancee's death. Everything is going well, and Alicia and Daniel are getting along. But the first night, Alicia hears bumps and whimpers on the top floor--which is supposed to be empty and completely uninhabited.
- Ángel is an aging professor, a lonely widower without purpose. His lovely, spirited neighbor, Terese, interrupts his suicide attempt when she comes to borrow wine. - Andrés returns to his city after a long time to take care of an old mansion that his father has bequeathed him, at first it seems that he's going to sell it quickly to his stepbrother Ramón who wants to tear it down to build flats, but the desire to investigate in the family's past and above all, find out how his father died, makes the deal more dilated than expected.
- At the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), some Republican fighters continue to harass the victors with guerrilla operations. One of the zones of resistance were the mountains of León. In the region of Riaño, half a dozen maquis maintain a very unequal fight against the Civil Guard. Ramiro, Santiago and Gildo, three militiamen, are persecuted by a patrol of the Benemérita under the control of a sergeant who is in love with the same woman that Ramiro. To get enough money to get them to France, the militiamen kidnap the owner of a mine and demand 150,000 pesetas in exchange for their freedom.
