Grace leaves, Evelyn kills Bellwood, and Alice is accused of the crime. Evelyn commits suicide, leaving a note confessing to the crime. Robert forgives Grace, and Alice is sent home.

They interview Vanesse, who informs them that Paul died like a hero in the war. The Willards then meet Nungesser, who falls in love with Lucille, Paul's sister, and makes a silent resolution to arrange for Paul's pardon. This he does, and then goes to the United States to find Vanesse and to discover the truth about Paul's case. Nungesser discovers that Vanesse is planning to rob the air mail; with Paul's help, he captures Vanesse and recovers the loot. Vanesse dies from the effects of a plane crash; Paul is cleared of all guilt and marries his former sweetheart, Marie, with Nungesser and Lucille are swept to the heights on the wings of happiness.

David follows Jeanne to the office of Peter Carter, an author of books on marriage, who declares his love for her; but threatened by David with a gun, Peter's cries of mercy prove him unworthy. MacCullough, the last of her ex-suitors, almost carries her off but proves to be Marian's new husband and brings about a reunion of Jeanne with David.

For the sake of a woman, Robert Morton serves a prison sentence and is disowned by his father, Henry. He is freed after several years and arrives in San Francisco, California, where he meets Camille Balishaw in a Barbary Coast saloon. The commissioner then decides to give Peter a chance to make the force, if he scores well on the written examination. Peter declares the Tropic of Capricorn to be in the Bronx and fails to pass; the commissioner, however, allows him to wear the uniform for one night in order not to disappoint Peter's girl, Judy McNulty. Walking the beat with Officer Gaffney, he becomes involved in preventing a robbery, during which Gaffney is shot. Peter comes to his aid and captures the robbers, being himself hurt in the process. In the hospital, the commissioner, on account of his bravery, pins a shield on him, and Peter and Judy make plans to be married.

Two ex-jailbirds join up with a con man. After saving a farm girl's life, they are rewarded with lodging by her widowed mother. The older man and the con man devise a plan to swindle the generous lady by convincing her that a valuable mineral spring exists on her land.
