- A 1930s British summer Bank Holiday starts at midday on Saturday with a rush for the trains to the sea-side. Doreen Richards under the name Miss Fulham is off with friend Milly to a beauty contest. Geoffrey and nurse Catherine Lawrence have decided to spend an illicit week-end in the Grand Hotel, although Catherine's mind keeps turning back to the hospital case she was working on. Arthur, May and the children are set on a more straight-forward excursion of sea, sand, and pub. Meanwhile, the manager and performers of the "Follies" on the pier pray for rain.
- A young woman turns to Sherlock Holmes for protection when she's menaced by an escaped killer seeking missing treasure. However, when the woman is kidnapped, Holmes and Watson must penetrate the city's criminal underworld to find her.
- George Shuttleworth is convinced that he has the talent to win the Isle of Man TT races, despite what his neighbours back home in Wigan may think. During the trials, the brakes go on George's bike, 'The Shuttleworth Snap', which he made himself. As a result, he breaks the TT lap record, becoming an instant motor-cycling star. As the big race approaches, George soon realises that other jealous riders will stop at nothing to make sure he does not take part in the race. An early George Formby film and probably his best.
- The port city of Bristol, England, in the 1800s is home to Java Head, a sailing ship line company. The owner has two sons. One, a handsome seafarer, is in love with a local girl, but cannot marry her due to a long-running feud between their fathers. After a lengthy voyage, he returns with a very exotic, noble Chinese wife, which scandalizes the conservative town.

He gets to know her and hers at the pub, and she attends a full dress affair in his honor at the embassy. The King is informed by his father he must make an announcement that he's going to marry the princess of another royal family in order to acquire badly needed power and funds. Nellie is hurt and runs off, not understanding how much he really wanted her. A telegram with a confusing message is soon received at the pub, and the family leaves to go to the King's side, believing that Nell's to marry him after all. But the truth is evident on arrival, that though his feelings are still with her, he must marry the dull and emotional daughter of the wealthy neighboring monarch. Gracie-that is, Nellie, gamely makes the best of it and takes the silly princess though a crash course in charm, and in no time she become more presentable, and the royal wedding will be a success. Our Nell grins and bears it. Brave girl.
- Grace Marwood and her husband, a hopeless hypochondriac, take a cruise where she falls in love with the ship's medical officer, young Dr Daventry. The two continue to meet chastely for several years, with Marwood's behaviour becoming ever more selfish and insufferable in the interim, until her husband finally becomes suspicious and accuses her violently of the adultery she has not in fact committed, provoking her to leave him for the man she loves. Meanwhile, the invalid's every whim is catered to by the mysterious well-educated footman Simpson, who is apparently prepared to put up with anything from his employer. But Marwood falls genuinely ill, and Daventry is the only doctor in England who may be able to save him... and the footman has a secret of his own...
