Though their games were part of two civic celebrations over the weekend, there was little to celebrate for the New Richmond Millers.

The Millers faced both of the St. Croix Valley Baseball League leading teams. On Friday, the Millers hosted Hudson as part of the Fun Fest celebration and were no-hit in a 9-0 loss. On Sunday, the Millers played at River Falls as part of the River Falls Days event, losing to the Fighting Fish, 14-4, in seven innings.

The Fun Fest crowd saw an excellent pitching showing from Hudson ace Logan VonBerge, with the Millers striking out 22 times in the game. New Richmond pitcher Tate Magnuson put up a good battle until being knocked out of the game in the sixth inning when he was hit in the wrist by a line drive up the middle.

Mark Albright

“That was his best outing,” said New Richmond manager Ryan Stephens.

When the Millers went to River Falls on Sunday, they tried a different approach on offense. Corbin Reiling led off the game with a hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Grant Riemenschneider. Mark Albright followed with a hit, before stealing second base.

Stephens then called for a suicide bunt. With Reiling charging toward the plate, the River Falls pitcher fired a wild pitch, allowing Reiling to score.

Every time the Millers scored, the Fish answered back with multiple runs. Austin Juhl led off the fifth for the Millers with a single and scored on a fielder’s choice. Juhl was responsible for the Millers two runs in the seventh inning when he drove a homer over the left field fence.

Stephens said scoring four runs against the Fish was a good sign for his team.

“Offensively, I was happy. If we can get baserunners, we steal on them or we put sacrifice bunts down,” he said.

The Millers face a pair of SCVBL opponents this weekend. They play at Spring Valley on Friday, before hosting Ellsworth Saturday. Both games are 7:30 p.m. starts.
