I can never resist updating my midi dress collection at this time of year as the new season pieces start to drop online (making sure to sell those dresses that have stayed firmly at the back of my wardrobe).

Midi dresses are so versatile as they can be worn with boots or trainers in the cooler weather, and sandals or slides in the warmer months, making them a worthy fashion investment.

From my high street go-to & Other Stories to celebrity-favourite Reformation, now is the time to shop the new-in styles. Expect darker, warmer colours, heavier fabrics and fun prints for autumn/winter. Think burgundy, black, leopard print and denim options, as well as long sleeve, ruffle, and satin styles.

It's arguably a wardrobe staple, but you'll see some royals wearing midi dresses more than others, and none more so than the Princess of Wales. She's synonymous with a midi dress and longline coat in the autumn/winter months, pictured here in a tonal camel coloured ensemble. The 42-year-old royal looked effortlessly elegant, wearing the look with court shoes and a leather belt to cinch in her waist. Kate also likes to wear printed midi dresses in the spring/summer season.

Kendall Jenner is another celeb who loves a midi, usually opting for sleeker styles like this fitted denim piece. While Caroline Daur demonstrates how to pair leopard print with another of this season's biggest trends - burgundy.

You can't go wrong with a black midi dress in the colder months, as proven by Victoria Beckham. I love how she's styled hers with colour pop shoes.

How I chose the best midi dresses

  • New-in: Your wardrobe deserves a new season refresh, so everything in this edit is from the just-dropped autumn/winter collections.
  • Style: Autumn is synonymous with darker hues and more modest cuts, so I've considered this while curating my edit.
  • Fabrics: Our linen midi dresses are now firmly in our summer wardrobes, making way for more suitable fabrics like knitted pieces and heavier crepe.

M&S Jersey Midi Column Dress

M&S leopard print midi dress

Editor's Note:

M&S have been nailing the leopard print dresses this season, and this midi is their most popular yet. Cut in a tea dress style with a comfy regular fit, it's figure-skimming and so flattering.

Reformation Livia Merino Sweater Dress

Reformation midi dress

Editor's Note:

Nothing says autumn like a sweater dress and I'm obsessed with this one from Reformation. In this season's hottest colour, it's slim fit with the most gorgeous backless cut, and made from the softest merino wool. Dress it up with heels for date night.

H&M Flounced Tie-Neck Dress

H&M midi dress

Editor's Note:

Ruffles are having a moment right now, and this is giving me Daisy Edgar Jones in Chloé vibes. If you're looking for a statement white dress you can still wear in the daytime, this is it.

Rixo Bondi Silk Midi Dress

Rixo ruffle dress

Editor's Note:

Royal-approved Rixo just dropped the autumn midi dress of dreams. Made from 100% silk and adorned with trending rose print, it's sleeveless with a scoop neck and the brand's signature bias cut. You could wear this day or night with boots or heels.

Never Fully Dressed Mimi Studded Lace Midaxi Dress

Never Fully Dressed black midi

Editor's Note:

Never Fully Dressed's midi has playful cut-outs and cool studded detail to take it from a regular LBD to a little more statement. The sleeveless style has adjustable straps for the perfect fit.

Mango Printed Dress

Editor's Note:

If you're looking for a printed piece, Mango's new-in midi is gorgeous. Made from a flowy fabric, it has a straight cut and front button closures. I love it styled with suede and gold jewellery.

Reiss Hope Colourblock Midi Dress

Editor's Note:

Reiss has just dropped several stylish colourblock dresses and this one comes in the most autumnal hues. It's made from a ribbed knit fabric that skims the body.

Nobody's Child Denim Graceland Midi Shirt Dress

Editor's Note:

The ever popular denim dress has been having more of a moment recently, thanks to Princess Kate being pictured wearing one earlier this month. If you're looking for a midi style, this organic cotton piece from Nobody's Child is quickly becoming a bestseller.

Sleeveless Two-Tone Midi Dress

& Other Stories midi dress

Editor's Note:

Made with contrasting, two-tone materials, this & Other Stories midi dress is a bit more interesting than your average sleeveless daytime midi. I love it styled with silver jewellery, and would dress it up or down with ballet flats or heeled boots.

New Look Burgundy Leopard Print Midi Dress

Editor's Note:

I had to include this gorgeous leopard print midi dress too. A more subtle design in a burgundy hue, it features a flattering relaxed fit and long, sheer bell sleeves .

River Island Spot Frill Midi Dress

River Island polka dot dress

Editor's Note:

Polka dots are eternally stylish, but this River Island midi dress has a high neck cut and slightly sheer fabric to give it a chic, modern edge.
