OTTAWA - The Green Party of Canada expresses disappointment in the decision by NDP MPs to support a Conservative motion aimed at undermining carbon pricing.
"This is a clear example of cynical politics prevailing over principle," stated Leader Elizabeth May. "The decision by the NDP to align with the Conservatives on this issue is deeply troubling. It goes against the interests of combating climate change."
The GPC emphasizes that carbon pricing is a crucial tool in addressing the climate crisis. The NDP is disregarding the importance of effective climate policies and succumbing to fear-mongering tactics.
"It’s tragic to see our NDP friends choose to echo the no-plan Conservatives' fear-mongering rhetoric instead of focusing on the real drivers of inequality in this country. They could focus as we do on fighting the tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy or slashing the indefensible corporate welfare that costs Canadians billions of dollars. Instead, they’re jumping on the easy bandwagon of false attacks on carbon pricing," remarked Deputy Leader Jonathan Pedneault. " At the end of the day, the impact of so-called progressive parties dropping the ball is much greater on the pockets of average Canadians than any carbon pricing."
MP Mike Morrice echoed these sentiments. "Cutting rebates and undermining carbon pricing will not solve the affordability crisis." "We must instead focus on addressing price gouging and providing support through initiatives like the Canada disability benefit."
The GPC underscores the importance of informed and evidence-based policymaking in addressing climate change and affordability issues. We advocate for a collaborative approach that involves input from climate scientists, economists, and experts in sustainable development.
"It is deeply disappointing to see the NDP aligning with the Conservatives on this critical issue," added May. "By prioritizing political gamesmanship over effective climate action, the NDP is failing Canadians and undermining our collective efforts to combat climate change."
The Green Party of Canada remains the only opposition party to vote for the climate.
