I read extensively as a child, and continue to do so. My tastes in books tend to be eclectic. I've read classics, romances, horror, thrillers, poetry, humor, dystopian, and a variety of nonfiction books. Okay, even comic books. Yes, I was a kid once. Very, very long ago...

I suppose that it was only natural that I would become a writer. My sixth-grade teacher was very taken with a poem I wrote for class. In fact, I sold a poem in my early twenties, which was the start of a sporadic career for me. I've written and sold small things since, including greeting card, notepad, and other similar ideas.

Once, I wrote a young adult novel and submitted it to a contest. I received a note from the judge who told me that while it wasn't right for their pu

Sometimes I work puzzles. Sometimes I get busy doing things I should have been doing but was too into writing to do. TV is okay. Or DVDs. Or exercising. And, of course, reading. Or, if you really want to push ahead with your project, have someone show up with a problem, or call with a problem, or get killed. Think of all the bad things that could go on around your character, and pick one. Make a list, like of weapons. Choose one. Have it move, not remain static. Or, if your main character is having a nice cup of tea, have something fall through the roof, literally or figuratively. Think action, even in a romance novel. And have your bad guy be a really bad guy, not just some gossip. Be different. Other than that, you could try taking a nap. Dreams make good fodder for stories, too, sometimes.(less)

One thing I don't advise: never have your main character tell another one that he's crazy, and don't have him hit the crazy person in the head, unless you're ready for the crazy one to take on your good guy. Crazy guys hate those two things.(less)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Tools: Transform Your Problems into Courage, Confidence, and Creativity was an amazing book, just what I had been hoping to find. I know it was no "coincidence" that I picked this up when my husband and I were at Dollar Tree. Usually, when I see something similar, I just look wit Read more of this blog post »

“Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers. It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business. I live by the golden rule: Treat others as you'd want them to treat you. The religious right wants to tell people how to live.”

“Why should I have to hide the fact that I don't believe there’s a supreme being? There’s no proof of it. There’s no harm in saying you’re an atheist. It doesn't mean you treat people any differently. I live by the Golden Rule to do unto others, as you'd want to be treated.

I just simply don't believe in religion, and I don’t believe necessarily that there’s a supreme being that watches over all of us. I follow the teachings of George Carlin. George said he worshipped the sun. He was a fellow atheist. I’m in good company … Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, Charles Darwin. It’s not like I’m not with good company and intelligent people. There have been some good, intelligent atheists who have lived in the world.”

“George Bush keeps saying that terrorists keep attacking us because we have freedom here in America. So what, the solution is to take away our freedoms and they won't attack us?”
