Every freedom-loving soul across the globe and youth in all schools everywhere should read this book. As entertaining as it is short, it manages to cut communism to the core with the precision of a scalpel and shows that even the best intended form of socialism invariably ends in tyrannical, totalitarian rule by a privileged few and a life of struggle for the rest. Though Stalin’s Soviet Union was the original target of this book, it is timeless in its delivery of a lesson that has been proven true by all other dictatorships throughout history from Castro in Cuba and Chavez in Venezuela to Putin in Russia, Xi Jinping in China, and the Kim Dynasty in North Korea.
As warned by Téa Obreht in the Introduction to the most recently published version of this book: “The notion that Western countries are clever and strong enough to both recognize and resist the grip of totalitarianism is a dangerous myth.”
