Sometimes it is possible to escape the consequences of immorality if a society has clever leaders. But America was a democracy, and the combination of widespread immorality and stupidity cut off all hopes that immorality could find a cunning solution. That the immoral are, under the sensualist regime, anything but cunning, is absolutely fatal to the whole notion of sensualist progress.
