Writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Murder Falcon) and colorist Mike Spicer take Beta Ray Bill on a journey beyond the shadow of a god! Plus: This oversize first issue contains an exclusive conversation between Johnson and Beta Ray Bill’s creator, the legendary Walter Simonson!
Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrator. He's worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.
This miniseries attempts to remove the main character from the shadow of a mighty thunder god, and the first issue sees Bill remove the trapping of Asgard and depart on his own adventure with his trusty spacecraft Skuttlebutt. I'm all for it and eagerly await the next issue.
Read as a single issue on the Comixology app. The collective review for the entire Beta Ray Bill (2021) storyline can be found on my review of BETA RAY BILL: ARGENT STAR.
Ok this caught me off guard. I came in expecting something else but what I got was good none the less. Bill doesn’t have Stormbreaker anymore which lead to him being shown up in battle. He had a heartbreaking moment with Sif and had to watch someone else get praise for something he couldn’t do. So he has left Asgard to find himself and a new weapon. Should be good.
Well this was fantastic. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Daniel Warren Johnson has already done some great things for Comics, but I think in the next ten years or so he's gonna really crank out some excellent stuff. I can't imagine what all he'll come up with, I just know it's probably gonna be awesome and I'm gonna read it. Highly recommend!
I'm a big follower of Daniel Warren Johnson. I read as much of his stuff as I can find and this series is no exception.
In this series, Johnson takes a closer look at an oft-sidelined character, Beta Ray Bill. While it felt like this started off with just a slice less heart than some of Johnson's other original stories, I think that may well have been from my sheer lack of knowledge on Bill as a character. Still, there are already some trademark hints at Johnson's usual deftness with themes, and I look forward to seeing where the series goes. The artwork and coloring are, as usual, phenomenal with the Johnson/Spicer team.
Beta Ray Bill has been a character I have always loved but never really read any of his comics. Over the summer I stumbled upon issue 1 at my local comic shop & I was super hype to see a brand new series being made for him. A few months later and I have the first 4 issues so I finally read thru them and wow! This is such a fun read with well-written characters & great storytelling. Yes, this is a classic hero's tale with danger, adventure, and friends, but Bill's character works perfectly for this type of tale.
I really really hope this little run sparks more interest in his character and we get more adventures. There is so much action, love, heartbreak, and nuance packed into these pages. A must-read if you're looking for incredible art, great storytelling, and a good read.
Not the art style I normally gravitate towards. And there was still the SJW notion of the marginalized person being overshadowed by the white mainstream hero. But otherwise this is a great book. Very creative. Interesting turns in a few pages. And you are made to sympathize with Bill. The story should have been longer, the final scene with Thor especially being more teased out. But great overall. This should be a good series.
This is my first Beta Ray Bill read. I was surprised how good and sad the story was. I thought it funny that his sidekick/ride is called Skuttlebutt. Beta Ray has an interesting backstory, and I hope it's explained more later on in the series. Now, on to finding the other comic books!
Through strong character writing and gorgeous artwork, the first issue of this new mini-series really gets at the heart of Beta Ray Bill and his current troubles. Great start to a new story.
