HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MUTANT? MR. SINISTER is missing! Will the Hellions be able to put aside the tensions poised to split the team apart long enough to unravel the mystery? On the upside, at least Sinister found his cape.
2.5 I'm rounding down. Really more of a filler issue. Substantively, all that happened was that Sinister got captured by someone, and the Hellions were sent to rescue him. Along the way we saw their simplistic team dynamics play out, to predictable effect.
Sinister talked about his fucking cape again. (Writers, it really wasn't funny the first time. Also, Sinister isn't supposed to be fucking funny.) Empath talked about wanting to toy with someone. Someone alluded to how Havok gets mind-controlled a lot. Wild Child made a reference to needing to appear as an alpha wolf. Nanny and Orphan-Maker acted out a twisted mother-child dynamic. Kwannon strutted around with most of her bare ass hanging out, with an emotionless expression.
Well, it's about time someone remember exactly how much a threat Mastermind is!
Unfortunately, for him, Mister Sinister is not the one that remembered. And now he's dead. Or is he?
Also, just how creepy are Nanny and Orphan Maker? Very creepy, that's how creepy they are. Like, extremely creepy. This issue was light on the jokes and heavy on the darkness, but Peter's insistence that Nanny call him "Pete"...and his insistence that she's not his mom, provided some welcome light relief.
Hellions continues to be a twisted little gem of a book...and speaking of twisted, here comes Arcade!
Holy smokes Batman! This book continues to be a gas! No non-hip squares need apply to this party.
With the way that this comic continues to practically reinvent itself with every story arc, all the whole building off of previous issues, this way be the best of marvel this year.
I get that stories need protagonists but why would Mastermind have been resurrected? Dude died a long time ago and only recanted his evil ways on his deathbed. Anyways... Ok extension of the storyline. The conflict with Orphan Maker and Nanny is funny. The added tension with Havok and Empath and also between Greycrow and Wildchild. I have to admit I don't know anything about the history with Arcade so I'm not as excited as I have been with some of the other reintroduced villians.
There are a lot of good X-Men book at the moment, the new status-quo for the Mutants seems to be a really good thing, and is delivering some interesting teams and engaging stories. One of the books that has been consistently great, and a load of fun to read every month, is Hellions. The mixture of weird characters, violence, and humour, make it one of the books that I look forward to.
The latest issue sees the team having to go on something of a personal mission when their 'leader' Mr Sinister is kidnapped off of Krakoa. The first scene of the book shows the audience this kidnapping, during a meeting with the mutant Jason Wyngard, Mastermind, who appears to poison Sinisters tea; though this could be a false reality and that's what he used his powers to make Sinister believe.
It's interesting that Mastermind is already back alive, considering how many more beloved mutants there are who haven't been through the resurrection process yet it's something of a surprise that someone as loathed as Wyngard made it higher up the list than some of the friends and loved ones of our heroes. But then this is Krakoa, where past misdeeds are forgotten and villains given a second chance, so perhaps the council believed that Wyngard was worthy of being given that second chance sooner than most. Unfortunately, it seems like he's not planning on taking that opportunity.

Luckily for Sinister, his team are there to try and save him, even though it's clearly obvious that most of them really don't want to. I love how the 'therapy' of the Hellions has actually seemed to work somewhat, and seeing the team come together, even if it's just in their hatred for Sinister is a lot of fun; the moment where several of the team start cracking jokes about going for lunch when they learn Sinister is the person they have to rescue is genuinely funny, and shows that very real friendships are forming here.
The rest of the issue focuses on the team travelling to New York to try and find Sinister, and almost immediately falling into Masterminds trap, falling victim to his abilities as their perception of reality is warped around them. It really begins to set the idea in place that despite not being much of a physical threat Mastermind could actually challenge the team in ways their previous opponents haven't yet. Although, the end reveal that Arcade is using Wyngard to get hold of the Hellions for his own games indicates that they could have more than one foe to deal with in the next few issues.
This issue is really just setting the stage for the next story-line after the last few issues dealt with the fall out from X of Swords, yet it still manages to be fun and engaging, and have some character development that feels earned and worth while.
3 stars feels a little generous. The humor is one of the things I appreciated most about this title early on but it's gotten to be too much for me. There's very little that is sinister about Mr. Sinister these days. Sure he's got some nefarious plan in the works as usual but he's completely lost the formidable and imposing aspects of his character. While I understand their dislike and distrust of him, he's become a shell of his former self and a complete joke to his team (and this reader). Nanny's rejection of Orphanmaker is another area where I felt the humor was heavy handed. Balancing the bratty temper tantrum with some true heartache and anger would have been a nice touch. Kwannon's character feels more and more flat. I appreciate the grittiness and dark tone of Hellions. There are some decent moments here but so many others lack depth or fizzle out too quickly. Maybe things are just spread too thin. Maybe my expectations are too high with what can be achieved in a single issue. But I see what Chip Zdarsky is doing in Daredevil, Vita Ayala in New Mutants and Leah Williams with X-Factor and I yearn for that deft handling of layered characters and storylines here.
Absolutely loving this: when Mr. Sinister is kidnapped, the Hellions demand to be the ones to find him, not X-Factor.
And what awaits them promises to be delightful. Funny, but also exploring the new relationship between Pete, once Peter, and Nanny, who has a new charge. This promises to be a prickly part of their relationship and I wonder if Pete is getting ready to grow up and leave his Nanny behind...
What glorious ridiculousness. The cynical hilarity of Hellions is so good. Sinister's abduction scene was great, the Hellions learning about it was funny, and then Mastermind's trippy sequence at the end was wonderful.
