177 New Fiction and Nonfiction Reads for Black History Month
February is Black History Month here in the U.S., and each year we like to join the celebration with big, bookish lists that will keep you reading long past the end of the month.
Loyal readers will recall that last year we gathered together a backlist of essential fiction from Black authors, going back a decade or so. This time around, we’re staying in the moment.
Below we’ve gathered 177 new books from Black authors—fiction and nonfiction—published since the beginning of 2023. This collection cuts across all genres, which makes for some exhilarating swerves in topic and theme. You might find debut literary fiction shelved next to bold dystopian sci-fi. Or gritty Southern noir next to mutigenerational Hollywood epics. Vampiric dark academia next to sensual contemporary romance.
Also on tap: literary horror, popular memoirs, humor writing, speculative Westerns, musical biographies, ecological science, historical scholarship, several Goodreads Choice Award books, and even a National Book Award winner you may have heard about. If you love reading, there’s something here for you.
Click on the book cover images for more information about each title, and use the Want to Read button to add to your own digital shelf. If you want to read more about Black History Month, the Library of Congress has put together a nice collection of links and exhibits.
