Like many reboots, talks of a series adaptation of the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith (which starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) garnered some raised eyebrows when it was first announced in 2021. But now, with one successful season down, even the skeptics have had a change of heart. Everyone is asking: "Is Mr. & Mrs. Smith coming back for season 2?"

With an engaging plot, romance intertwined with action and a pretty compelling cliffhanger of a season finale, season one of Mr. & Mrs. Smith took fans on a wild ride of two strangers navigating life as newlyweds and newfound spies, which helped it land fourth place in Nielsen’s streaming rankings and gain 964 million minutes watched within its first three days of streaming. It also snagged 16 Emmy nominations and 2 awards to date.

Since becoming acquainted with stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s new renditions of John and Jane Smith respectively, fans have been dying to know how it ends for the coworkers-turned-lovers. And whether or not those three gun shots that rang out in the last minutes of episode eight really marked the last we would see of them. Luckily, it seems that the Smiths will be returning to our screens.

Will there be a Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2?

The answer to the question looming in everyone’s minds is an emphatic yes!

"We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers," Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a May press release. The series has been renewed and will still feature Francesca Sloane, who co-created and executive-produced the show alongside Donald Glover, as the showrunner.

An announcement on Instagram also garnered tons of excitement from fans."I COULD CRY RIGHT NOW," one fan commented. "My favorite thing is when I'm satisfied with the conclusion of a one season show but they give us more. I'LL TAKE IT!!" another said. "Finally!!!" a third chimed in.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 cast: Will Donald Glover and Maya Erskine return?

In news that may be disappointing to fans, it is currently up in the air whether or not Donald and Maya will return for season two.

Variety reported that Donald, who also goes by the stage name Childish Gambino, is not slated to return to the role of John Smith due to his commitment to a world tour expected to run from August to February 2025. Though when the pair appeared on a June episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, they were more coy about whether or not they will be reprising their roles.

"It's like ruining Christmas," Donald told Jimmy Kimmel, comparing divulging return details to telling kids about their Christmas present ahead of the holiday. "It'll be more fun if you see the second season," Maya added, without sharing much more.

"Not if you're not in it, it won't be fun," Jimmy jokingly responded, and many fans may agree.

However, there is a fan theory circulating that even if Donald and Maya are missing from season two, the story of Jane and John Smith can continue.

"Don't get attached to the actors playing the characters," one fan wrote on Instagram. "The names they are given are code names and any couple can play them,” they added, suggesting that a rotating cast may be an option if Donald is too busy with his tour to play John Smith in the upcoming season.

We'll just have to watch and see!
