Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Spine (CAO) continues to grow its practice with its fellowship-trained orthopedics providers.

Dr. Karen Frye, DO, and Dr. Justin Grant, DO, CAO's Sports Medicine provider team, provide personalized care based on the expertise gained from working with elite athletes and specialized training. They utilize evidence-based methods to cater to each patient's needs.

“The patients I see coming to CAO range widely in age, ability, and medical needs, but one thing they have in common is a desire to be seen in a clinic that treats them like an individual. Our bodies are all different, and so are our injuries,” Dr. Frye said. “Using our collaborative work environment and multiple diagnostic modalities, I strive to provide every patient with the attention and care they need to get the appropriate treatment for their injury, to help them return to their activity or sport, and to help them manage the pain associated with these injuries,” she said.

Dr. Frye works with female athletes and all the individual needs that come with that, including female athlete triad and mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, as well as helping people attain a healthy weight, especially menopausal and perimenopausal women.

“As women, we face many challenges and changes in our bodies at various times in our lives. These changes can make healthy weight and healthy activity more difficult. The more we know about our bodies, the better we can work with them to understand our healthiest options,” said Dr. Frye.

Dr. Frye also sees an increase in patients looking to stay healthy and active as they age, helping to keep non-competitive athletes healthy and mobile for life.

“Our patients appreciate that we provide advanced, evidence-based non-operative orthopedic care for injured athletes and non-athletes using state-of-the-art ultrasound diagnostics and performing advanced ultrasound-guided diagnostic procedures,” said Dr. Frye. “We treat subacute and chronic injuries with biological therapies such as whole blood injections and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments when necessary. We also treat muscle dystonias and chronic migraines with Botox injections,“ she said.

A graduate of Midwestern University, Dr. Frye holds a Doctor of Osteopathy degree and completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Kentucky. She also received her Sports Medicine Fellowship at St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction. As part of her Fellowship, she provided medical care to athletes across all sports at Colorado Mesa University and local high schools.

Dr. Frye was a high school cross-country and soccer player who later played at Seattle Pacific University. She was an Academic All-American, and her team reached the NCAA Division 2 Final Four in her last two years of college.

In addition to Dr. Frye and Dr. Grant, CAO’s fellowship-trained orthopedic team includes Dr. Kevin Borchard, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee; Dr. Rhett Griggs, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in orthopedic shoulder, elbow, and hand surgery;  Dr. Gregg Martyak, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in hand and upper extremities; Dr. Mark Purnell, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in Sports Medicine;  Dr. J. Alex Sielatycki, a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with fellowship training in Comprehensive Spine Reconstruction; and Dr. Dan Ward, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in total joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee.
