The Mesa County Justice Center, which was constructed in 1998 through 2000, needs more space to accommodate the District Attorney’s Office and a new courtroom.

The 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office is investigating an instance in which a person was disrupting court proceedings by showing pornographic videos on Webex, District Attorney Dan Rubinstein confirmed Tuesday.

Rubinstein said he was unsure how many cases or hearings had been affected, but the issue is not limited to the 21st Judicial District, which encompasses Mesa County.

Webex by Cisco is a videoconferencing product that courts in Colorado have been using for people to appear virtually.

According to the company’s website, Webex offers “Safe, secure connection for courts and correctional facilities.”

“Empower safe, efficient communication between courts and correctional facilities with secure video conferencing for attorney visits, court hearings, and other legal needs,” the website states.

Brian Flynn, Chief Judge of the 21st Judicial District, said at a hearing Tuesday the district is implementing more stringent security measures for Webex by first keeping people in a waiting room to be vetted before letting them into the virtual courtroom.

“Somebody has been disrupting Webex by showing pornographic videos so we’ve had to lock everything down,” Flynn said.
