Yeah, photographs are probably an easier way to do things for birds. As a kid I could lure pigeons into range to draw them, but birds of prey... xD

I didn't do that here... the lasso tool is awesome if you start painting more geometrically (if you have the general shape of a feather and you do basic shading, it's really easy to go over it with detail later). In this case I was just durdling around with my brush. c:

As a kid I wanted to be a falconer, but then I realized 2+ years of doing nothing but training birds didn't really work with doing nothing but drawing. 8(

After living in San Diego and going to the two huge zoos there in my childhood... all other zoos are so depressing by comparison. :(

I prefer white for utilitarian reasons... I usually compile things together to print for my own reference (sketches/studies on the computer can still be put into a sketchbook, herp derp). I always paint for print; the white here wouldn't be quite as offensively bright when put on a sheet of paper.

I love your digital painting style ♥ It's so amazing, and I'm crazy jealous.
A tip for the Peregrine, though, especially if you're doing it as a study (and like you said, you only had a photo to work with, so it would be harder to pick up on some aspects) :3 If you dislike critique, please stop reading and disregard this:

The eyes are a little too small for this particular bird of prey. Peregrines are relatively small, and their eyes are large and somewhat bulbous, and their beaks are small and sharp. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped.....neTubercle.jpg ) The eyes of the bird are also very dark.
The bird you drew is closer to the larger raptors, like Red Tailed Hawks and eagles.
The other thing is the colors, but that might just be an artistic choice on your part, so take this with a grain of salt, haha..
Peregrines are more in the cold color spectrum: Dark navy blues, pale lemon yellow around the beak and eyes and feet, and steely bluish gray beaks. (Though the spots down the front are usually more of the brownish reddish color you used :3 )

Other than those nitpicky things, this is gorgeous and I hope you do many, many more ♥ I just thought you might like some constructive critique, since this is a study of the bird, and not a piece of art made for painting practice, other purposes etc :3

You are totally right on the eyes! I think because I drew anime when I was younger, I overcompensate by making eyes tiny on purpose... uguu anime this is not. I do like highlights in eyes, but I added some blue to make it appear darker without losing any shine. Awww yeah.

Though I don't necessarily agree with the colors in this particular instance (I think it's all a matter of lighting, since the peregrine looks pretty warm-ish in my photo), in other references they do certainly look bluer! I'll keep it in mine for next time I paint... I'll probably do a few more studies of these guys before moving onto something else. :)


And if you refresh, you'll see something that more closely resembles the animal I attempted to paint! Thank you so much for the critique, it was super helpful!

Hahahaha! Yaaay, glad it looks more like one! And yeah, some artists are loose cannons when it comes to critiques (forgetting that the critiquer WANTS you to improve and spent the time typing out a response). I watch one on tumblr where she gets upset or replies snarkily to fairly innocent asks. She's talented, but... a good attitude will get you further in life. :/

I agree completely :3 I know a couple people like that too, and it's just... really sad. They're usually the ones that feel really unhappy and alone inside, too (And express this by posting journals about it...which doesn't tend to help all that much unfortunately).
