A man was rescued from the Detroit River in the early hours of Monday morning.

Officials received a call just before 3 a.m. of a man yelling for help in the river, said Corey McIsaac, director of media relations for the Detroit Fire Department.

The location was off West Fort Street, McIsaac said, and it was west of the city’s downtown.

About 3:30 a.m., Detroit fire personnel pulled the man from the water, and he was taken to a Detroit hospital, McIsaac said.

Few other details on the incident were immediately available. The Detroit Fire Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard and Detroit police each directed further questions to the other named agencies or stated they had no information to provide.

CBP spokesman Youssef Fawaz did confirm the man was a lawful, permanent resident of the U.S.

The man was trying to swim to Canada, and it’s the second time in a month that a rescue for an international swim was conducted, radio station WWJ reported.
