BANGOR -- Police say two people were killed in a crash following a high speed police chase early Monday morning in Bangor. 

According to police, the chase began shortly before 9:30 a.m. Officials have since confirmed that the vehicle police were pursuing left the roadway along the Finson Road at a high rate of speed and struck a tree, killing both the driver and passenger. 

The victims have been identified as 39 year-old Noah Mushero of Bangor and 39 year-old Sheena Soctomah-Rolfe, of Orono. 

Police say they were involved in a chase with the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office this morning shortly before the accident, though right now police aren't saying why the chase started.

The crash happened just past a sharp corner. 

The road was shut down for several hours all the way from the Davis Road to Broadway as crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. 

Accounts from nearby witnesses say they saw the car fly by and could smell the burnt rubber before hearing the vehicle strike the tree. 

According to the Bangor Police Department, the crash is being reconstructed by the Maine State Police and the incident is still under investigation.
