Jennifer Lopez returned to her music career earlier this year with her first new album in a decade. This Is Me... Now was something of a commercial disappointment, but the actress and musician isn’t done fighting–or scoring hits.
This week, Lopez debuts a new song on a Billboard chart. The tune isn’t featured on her latest full-length, though. Instead, it’s a track that fans of the singer will recognize…though this time around, the familiar title sounds a bit different.
Lopez debuts her track “Waiting for Tonight” with producer Fisher on this week’s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. The tune opens at No. 13 on Billboard’s ranking of the bestselling dance and electronic singles in the U.S.
“Waiting for Tonight” is the name of one of Lopez’s earliest smashes…and she’s essentially made that composition a hit all over again. Fisher reworked the cut, but instead of marketing the production as a remix, the two pushed it as a “new” release. That means it was eligible to reach the Billboard charts as a standalone tune, and not influence the success of the original cut.
“Waiting for Tonight” marks Lopez’s fifth hit on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. It’s her first placement on the tally in half a decade. She last appeared on the list in 2019 with “Baila Conmigo,” which peaked at No. 5.
This latest win marks Lopez’s lowest-charting track on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales list. Of her five appearances, only one–this latest tune–has failed to crack the top 10. She’s ruled the roost once, in 2020, with “On the Floor,” her collaboration with Pitbull.
“Waiting for Tonight” was originally released by Lopez in 1999 as a single from her debut album On the 6. The song was a hit in many countries, including in the U.S., where it reached No. 8 on the Hot 100. It gave the rising talent her first Grammy nomination in the Best Dance Recording field, though she didn’t win the prize.
