Watch: Caleb Landry Jones' Animated Music Videos by Aidan Stadler

Caleb Landry Jones' Animated Music Videos

Time to rock with Caleb Landry Jones! These two animated music videos initially premiered last month but we're just now catching up with them - and they're too damn cool to pass up. Aside from acting (in DogMan, Harvest), Caleb Landry Jones also has a rock band and creates music as well. His latest album is called "Hey Gary, Hey Dawn" and it's out to listen to now if you're curious. To celebrate the release of a new deluxe edition, CLJ created two short music videos featuring some eclectic drawings that are animated and brought to life. The drawings are by CLJ himself, turned into music videos by the animation creator named Aidan Stadler. The videos are just about 1 minute each & very entertaining to watch - check out both below. "With a blend of intensity, vulnerability, and musical virtuosity, Jones invites listeners to embark on a journey that transcends traditional genres, promising an immersive experience that lingers long after the final note." 🎸

Watch: Short Doc 'Strange Beasts' About an Infamous Lion Safari Park

Strange Beasts Short Doc

"Successful, original, and dangerous..." 🦁 These are the unsettling true stories of an infamous safari park located in Australia. Strange Beasts is a fascinating 10 minute mixed media short film made by filmmaker Darcy Prendergast. It premiered in 2023 and is now available online to watch via Vimeo. During its decade of operation, the Bacchus Marsh Lion Safari (which was open from 1970 until about 1985) was one of Victoria's most popular tourist attractions - now one of its greatest mysteries. These are a few encounters as told by Ron 'Prenda' Prendergast - who was an 18 year old big cat keeper that worked there. 🐅 Shot on 16mm, the mixed format approach seamlessly sits archival footage beside era specific animation techniques, such as scratch on film, paint on glass, stop motion and 2D. This would play perfectly as a companion with Netflix's "Tiger King" series, though they're both depressing looks at poorly run big cat parks. Watch below.

Teaser Trailer for Video Games Inspired Anthology Series 'Secret Level'

Secret Level Teaser Trailer

"It's a new adventure... just for you!" Prime Video has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for an exciting new anthology series called Secret Level, the successor to the acclaimed Love, Death + Robots anthology series on Netflix. This time, Tim Miller and Blur Studios (the same studio that made Love, Death + Robots) are focusing on video games, launching with a collection of 15 animated short films. Secret Level is a new adult-animated anthology series featuring original stories set within the worlds of some of the most beloved video games. It's a "celebration of games and gamers." Each episode of Secret Level serves as a gateway to a new adventure, unlocking exciting worlds from beloved gaming classics and highly anticipated new titles. Classic games referenced include Armored Core, Crossfire, Dungeons & Dragons, Honor of Kings, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Spelunky, The Outer Worlds, Unreal Tournament, and Warhammer 40,000. So many talented video game designers have been secretly working on this for the past few years. And the footage looks amazing so far!! I'm huge fan of Tim Miller & Blur Studio, cannot wait to see how all 15 of these new shorts turned out.

Watch: Short Film 'Xie Xie, Ollie' - Directed by James Michael Chiang

Xie Xie, Ollie Short Film

"Happy Birthday, Grandma." In just under a month from now, the 2024 Toronto Film Festival will kick off up in Canada. One of the short films that premiered at TIFF 2023 last year is now available online to watch after touring on the festival circuit for a year. Xie Xie, Ollie is a heartfelt, humble 9-minute short made by a Chinese-Canadian filmmaker / photographer named James Michael Chiang. It stars his own brother Oliver Chiang as Ollie (and he co-wrote the script with James). Intro from TIFF: "In his efforts to connect with his Chinese heritage, a biracial man discovers challenges and complexities he may not have expected in James Michael Chiang's remarkably deft blending of drama and comedy." The short film also stars Selena Kang, Jake Shannon, Esfandiar Baraheni, Ronald Hae, Yee Ling Wong, and Xiu Fen Song. This reminds me of Lulu Wang's excellent film The Farewell for obvious reasons, which is also about the desire to connect with our family. This short has some seriously great cinematography and a very lovely score, too.

We Used to Own Houses Short Film

"I have a feeling that it's falling apart at the seams... And the people in the gutters recognize their means." This striking short film is worth just 7 minutes of your time. We Used to Own Houses is a mesmerizing short film made by an Australian filmmaker named David Robinson-Smith. A landlord is confronted by one of the many tenants he evicted in this unsettling film which first premiered at the 2023 Melbourne Film Fest last year. As walls crumble and secrets are laid bare, a haunting truth emerges, shattering the illusions of home. In this unsettling invasion, power shifts and the consequences of greed unfold. Starring Anthony Phelan, Thom Green, Joshua Mehmet, Laneikka Denne, and Frazer Bull-Clark as the floating man. This is remarkably powerful - great work.

Watch: Live-Action 'Coraline' Short Celebrating the 15th Anniversary

Coraline Live-Action Short

Peekaboo! 🍬 Laika's beloved stop-motion animation classic Coraline is playing in cinemas again this week - celebrating its 15th Anniversary with a theatrical (3D) re-release. Watch the new trailer here. Directed by Henry Selick, the story follows the young Coraline who discovers an idealized alternate universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains something dark & sinister. The Portland-based stop-motion studio recently ran a special promo contest - asking fans to create and submit their own live-action versions of any scene from Coraline. This 90-second long short film is the winner, titled Unwinding the Web - directed and produced by filmmaker Brittany Thurman. Laika also held a very similar live-action contest for ParaNorman's 10th Anniversary last year (watch those wining videos here & here). This winning live-cation Coraline scene follows the blue-haired girl into a theater where she discovers two strange hands grasping a glowing pearl. The short stars Riley Madison Fuller as the real-life Coraline. This is so much better than Disney's recent live-action adaptations - I want to see more of this footage. It's over way too fast.

Watch: Hilariously Gross Comedy Short 'Pink Eye' from Jacob Motz

Pink Eye Short Film

"It's not a big deal." Or is it?! Ewww. There's a hilarious new comedy short going around called Pink Eye, created by the filmmaker Jacob Motz. It's a story of what happens when someone in control loses control - because they're having a bad day with a bad case of Pink Eye. Thanks to our friends at Short of the Week, it's now available online to watch. An alpha female spirals when trying to navigate her challenging calendar while infected by a disgusting case of Pink Eye. Starring Jesse Burgum as Shell, along with Zach Gilford, June Christopher, Jadah Marie, and Constance Parng. Motz explains his inspiration for this short: "I had just read a fantastic short story by Nikolai Gogol called 'The Nose,' which is really absurd satire, and love the way that story poked fun at human nature (about an aristocrat who wakes up one day to discover his nose is missing). I loved an extreme unexpected incident like that to instigate a spiral for a character." 😉

Watch: Trippy Animated Music Video for Rémi Fox's 'Au Coeur du Son'

Au Coeur du Son Animated Short

"Sound has a heart. Being spherical, it has a center. It's the center of the heart." Whoa. Time for something trippy and mesmerizing. I tend to be drawn to these kind of distinctly unique animation creations, exploring visuals & ideas that can't always be described in words (more in our short film archives). French production studio Eddy has debuted their latest animated music video - for the song "Au Coeur du Son" (meaning "In the Heart of the Son"), by saxophonist Rémi Fox. It's less of a music video, more of animated short film which has a very peculiar narrative. Dive into a fascinating journey with Cesare, a young musicology student enchanted by the mystical words of a mysterious professor. The video is directed by a duo known as "Marie & Lucas" - exploring the depths of music and the human soul, mixing mystery, art and transformation. The animation style is extra vibrant and it features magnificent hand-drawn backdrops. It's definitely the kind of short film to watch when you pop an edible or a glass of wine at the end of the day and are relaxing at night.

Watch: Jim Cummings' Hilarious Marvel Short 'Is Now a Good Time?'

Is Now a Good Time? Short Film

"We hope that our brand of timeless characters and endurance through adversity was helpful along the way." Ha!! Oh this is definitely going to ruffle some feathers. But it's so good. The superbly talented Jim Cummings, director and writer and actor extraordinaire, has just debuted his brand new short film titled Is Now a Good Time? online to watch after first premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. This brutal satire mocks the Marvel superhero movie brand with a dark comedy story about a sick kid. Cummings also stars in the 11-minute short film as an employee for "Disney-Marvel" who is sent to the house of a dying sick kid, to fulfill his last wish of watching "Captain America 4" before he passes away. I can't say anything more - you just have to watch and listen. Cummings tweeted that "it might make things different for me and the team... I love cinema a whole lot and I just want you to know that I stand by this thing even if nobody sees it, so love it or hate it, thank you for being there for me thus far. I gave it my all." I hope everyone watches this.

Watch: Double-Corey Gone Wild in Vegas in 'Coreys' Kooky Short Film

Coreys Short Film

"I don't need to sleep. I don't use currency. I'm not a part of this time." There's a wild and crazy new short film going around the web called Coreys, made by comedian Conner O'Malley and filmmaker Dan Streit. If you haven't already seen it elsewhere, catch up with it now. Coreys is the latest wacky creation from comedy mastermind Conner O'Malley, who makes comedy videos and prank videos on YouTube. This is the best intro via No Film School: "Coreys follows a man named Cory who feels a little stagnant and bored with his traditional family life. He's fallen into a bit of a slump, until he starts having visions of a doppelgänger living a more exciting, vagrant life in Los Vegas. He eventually tracks down the darker version of himself, only to fuse with him, transforming the Corey's into one super Corey." This gets extra insane right at the 6 minute mark. It's super creative & fun – a great example of what clever YouTube-generation filmmaking looks like.
