The Expanse (2015)
A sci-fi detective movie that gets off to a promising start, strong in details and the world/worlds where it takes place. New York looks fantastic! Thomas Jane rocks in that hat. “What’s the hat for?" “So my head doesn’t get wet." Season 1: Now I’m beginning to understand why it’s been called Game of Thrones in space. The hunt for the spaceship Anubis with its special cargo is accompanied by political intrigue and disruption of the fragile peace between Earth, Mars and the colonized asteroids between Jupiter and Saturn. There are dead bodies at every turn and if it had been bought by a more gutsy station than SyFy, there could have been more swearing and sex, but as it is, the creators sometimes have to look the other way. Season 2: Probably the best space series available right now. The quality has is improving and the second season is way better than the first. The detective storyline is somewhat lacking, but the mysterious discovery of blue butterflies makes up for that. Both Ganymede and Mars are given sufficient space and Venus is a pleasant surprise at the end. Just awesome. I hope it retains its qualities. ()
Season 2 (2017) (S02)
Probably the best space series around right now. The quality keeps rising and second season easily surpasses the first. The detective storyline is slightly lacking, but the mysterious discovery of butterflies makes up for it. Ganymede, Mars and Venus all provide a pleasant surprise at the end. Just awesome. Let’s hope it maintains its qualities. ()
Season 3 (2018) (S03)
An absolute blockbuster. The first half of the season sets off a war that the creators did the groundwork for two whole years, and it flows along delightfully smoothly. The second half works on the mysterious side and returns to what we know and love. The ending is the beginning of something big, and thank god Bezos bought it. ()
Season 4 (2019) (S04)
Blessed be the name of Amazon for buying The Expanse and bringing us another season, which probably concludes Miller’s story. The new Earth looks fantastic, but only in the later episodes…when the water recedes. The rather low-key story about the dispute between the colonists and the traffickers is completely transformed in the season finale. The sequences inside the enormous alien structures look just like how I imagine Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness. Perfection. ()
Season 5 (2020) (S05)
This terrorist series involving throwing asteroids at each other is really inconsistent. The family intrigues of the unlikeable Inaros and his family hold back the story unnecessarily and it wouldn’t matter if it was cut out. The last episode is full-on, filled with shocking revelations, unfortunately before that we have four episodes where Naomi is simmering on the Chetzemoka and Amos wanders the forests somewhere near Baltimore. But why, for god’s sake? And the budget? Was it a decision of the series’ creators? This greatly tempts to watch the last series and I look forward to it, but I need to read the book first. Despite sexual harassment, Alex leaves the series as a hero. A little help! The bottle! ()
Season 6 (2021) (S06)
Incomplete. They simply repeated most of the interesting stuff from the last season, finishing up the political storyline and having a lot, a real lot of warring. Which is fine and done with quality, but we were mainly interested in getting to the bottom of some fundamental mysteries. The ones from last season. Why does the Ring gate break ships down into atoms? And a new one, how come dogs can revive dead birds? ()
