A severely middling soft crime drama that reeks of a wannabe-modern-Agatha-Christie premise seen a hundred times over, where everyone is a suspect. The series main attractive is the nice acting by familiar faces and offers a glimpse into the fancy lives of the pompous characters of American high society. The first two episodes are heavy on boredom, then things pick up and the last two episodes were fine. It's far from nail-biting though, more like watching it with one eye while ironing. ()
I went into this expecting a bit of déjà vu, maybe a nod to Nicole Kidman’s Big Little Lies days. But it turns out, even a talented cast and capable direction can’t guarantee a quality film if the foundation isn’t there. The setting—a world of multimillionaires and their detached behavior—just felt off, like a pure distillation of everything you’d want to root against. The result? An unlimited supply of boredom, making The Perfect Couple a painfully average drama. ()
Another weak Netflix miniseries. Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber no longer draw audiences, and the source material is a trivial novel by the mediocre author Elin Hilderbrand. When Kidman started doing more for VOD, I was pleased; Hemingway & Gellhorn was an excellent project, but since Big Little Lies, it’s been fifty-fifty. The same genres over and over, increasingly smaller budgets, and at best, a somewhat thrilling crime story, while at worst, an endless variation on a social novel... ()
It started as a great whodunit with diverse characters, an original setting and an easy-going atmosphere, but I didn't like where it went in the last two episodes, where the whole series slowly fell apart like a house of cards. At first we are introduced to the characters, each of whom is interesting and has something to offer, then we start guessing "who did it", which is the most fun part and not so easy to guess, as we don't get that many clues. The biggest problem, however, is the rather flabby ending without the desired catharsis and the lack of twists, heart-stopping denouements or more suspense to pull you out of the seat. In fact, the whole thing builds up for the first few episodes and then slowly decays in the second half to a lackluster ending that just isn't that satisfying. A sometimes entertaining series with a fine cast, a beautiful lead actress and a nice look, but overall it's actually a rather untapped potential and doesn't even come close to similar genre stuff with its detective line.
