The Zone of Interest

After weeks in limited release, Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-nominated The Zone of Interest opens in theaters everywhere this weekend. Tickets are on sale now.

The Zone of Interest transports us to 1943 in Nazi-occupied Poland, where a family lives an idyllic live in a house next to a wall. On the other side of that wall? The Auschwitz death camp.

In our exclusive featurette below, The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer describes the family’s patriarch: “He’s very good at his job, they live in the country in a lovely house with a lovely garden. He also happens to be the commandant of Auschwitz.”

The Zone of Interest zooms in on the life of Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, played here by Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, asking us to consider how these seemingly ordinary people became agents of mass murder – and whether we see any of ourselves in them. Glazer explains, “The whole idea of this project was to be confronted by a reflection of ourselves on some level.”
