Jordan Pickford was once again a hero between the sticks for England as they advanced to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, thanks to a 5-3 penalty shootout win over Switzerland. Pickford saved the first Swiss penalty, taken by Manchester City star Manuel Akanji, inspiring his team-mates to score all five of their spot-kicks and fire England into their second consecutive Euros semi.

Many goalkeepers now tend to keep a list of the opposition team's penalty takers on their water bottles in the event that the game goes the whole 120 minutes – and Pickford is no exception.

Images of Pickford's bottle that had the entire Switzerland team listed, alongside their preferred side to shoot to, went viral on social media on Saturday night. On the bottle, it could be seen that one line read: "AKANJI, DIVE LEFT." And it proved pivotal, as that's exactly what the England No.1 did to save the spot-kick.

Pickford outsmarted the City star using this water bottle, showing that his intelligence has long been visible – even if he used to tweet some wild things in his youth.

Some of the Everton goalkeeper's old tweets have resurfaced following his heroics in Germany, which have left England supporters in hysterics.

One person posted a picture of Akanji with some maths equations behind him – signalling his detailed thought processes before stepping up – and another of Pickford looking determined alongside some of his old tweets.

One funny tweet from the former Sunderland keeper back in 2012 read: "Wish the parents would pay for me to have sky in my room, freeview is soul destroying at this time of night." And another hilarious 2012 post read: "On way to metro, mam has give me some money, wonder what to do."

Fans quoted the best posts from Pickford overnight and shared their appreciation for the shot-stopper. One said: "If you don't rate Pickford I have no idea what to tell you."

Another fan, who quoted one of Pickford's epic histroic tweets after a haircut back in the day, added: "'Short, back and f****** stomping' - give Picks a knighthood."

Another tweet from 2012 that resurfaced read: "Round my gran's for dinner is the best #gammon #chips #pineapple." One supporter quoted the tweet and said: "Old Pickford tweets are great!"

Since his old-school hilarity on social media, Pickford has regularly stood up and saved England in their time of need using his intelligence on penalties, just like at the 2018 World Cup against Colombia, and he also almost earned the Three Lions the trophy at Wembley at Euro 2020 – but it wasn't to be that night.

Pickford and his England team-mates will now take on the Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 on Wednesday at 8pm UK time.
