Brits have been warned that "disruptive" and "unpleasant" conditions are imminent as fresh yellow alerts have been issued.

The Met Office has warned of violent winds as well as snow for certain parts of the UK as temperatures could plummet to -2C in certain areas later this week.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also issued yellow weather warnings for North West, North East, Yorkshire and The Humber, East of England, West Midlands and East Midlands.

Alongside the unsettling weather, the number of Brits with flu in hospital has quadrupled over the past month and is rising, NHS chiefs have warned.

With this in mind the NHS is now urging vulnerable people to do one thing to stay warm.

The NHS has advised that elderly people should wear socks to bed in order to help cope with the cold winter weather.

Moulton Medical Centre in Lincolnshire said: “Make sure to always wear socks, slippers or shoes around the house. If your feet get cold at night, then go to bed wearing socks.”

This advice comes after the UK Health Security Agency issued eight cold weather alerts.

The NHS strongly advised people against going outside early in the morning or late in the evening during the cold snap which started earlier this month.

Alongside wearing socks to bed, the health service has encouraged the elderly to wear a scarf placed around their mouths.

Immunocompromised people are also advised to layer up their clothes even when indoors.

The simple solution of wearing socks to bed is to help trap heat around a person’s feet which are known to be heat-loss areas.

Wearing socks to bed effectively insulates a person and helps prevent their body temperature from dropping too quickly.

A rapid drop in body temperature is highly dangerous for elderly people and could lead to hypothermia or other serious health issues.

Tonight temperatures are set to drop up to -2C in the Aberdeen area of Scotland. The Met Office forecasts 0C in Brize Norton but milder temperatures for the rest of the country.

On Saturday, a low of -5C is expected in central Scotland, as per WXCharts.
