A quirky property has come on the market which offers a new owner the chance to live on an island seven miles inland from the sea where they can enjoy unspoilt views of the countryside.

The lofty home is a converted windmill, known as Red Mill, and sits on a marsh island surrounded by three waterways in the stunning wetland of the Norfolk Broads.

Auction House East Anglia have listed the unique abode for sale at 11pm on July 24, with a guide price of around £225,000 to £250,000.

The three-storey windmill features three bedrooms, with the third having access to the loft area. It also enjoys a ground floor with a sitting room, hall, kitchen diner and bathroom.

Surrounding the building are spacious gardens, as well as a shed and access to a nearby riverbank.

Red Mill sits on Haddiscoe Island, a three-mile square piece of wetland and marshland separated from the mainland by the tidal River Yare, River Waveney and a body of water called the New Cut.

The Norfolk Broads in which the island lies is one of the most beautiful parts of Britain and contains unique fenland and landscapes popular with holidaymakers and migrating birds.

According to the Eastern Daily Press, anyone hoping to purchase the property could have some famous neighbours. In 2019 journalist and Loose Women panelist Janet Street Porter said she had moved to the island.

The Auction House East Anglia website calls Red Mill a "delightfully situated former windmill now offering three bedrooms spacious gardens and river views".

It adds: "This former windmill which is with the Norfolk Broads conservation area has been tastefully converted into a truly impressive residential property that includes three bedrooms, a circular main reception room, spacious kitchen/diner and bathroom.

"This grade two listed property is far from any main road and is ideal for those seeking a peaceful away-from-it-all retreat or there is enormous potential for holiday letting income.

"This Broadland setting offers outstanding natural beauty and is surrounded by wildlife, open skies and far-reaching views. St Olaves is the closest village though Great Yarmouth is within eight miles of the property."
